I am happy to see that these are made in the USA but otherwise, these are not for me personally. They work out to about 80 cents a day to take the 2 large hard to swallow pills. I take a little red football shaped one and only need to take one a day to get more than what this company has in Zeaxanthin and Lutein percentages…and mine work out to under 20 cents a day. I really can not suggest these as they are way out of line price wise…and large and harder to swallow.

THIS FORMULA, this specific formula, and the amount of each ingredient used is the EXACT SAME as what has been used in a well known AREDS2 study which can be very easily found using words AREDS2 NIH NEI GOV
(AREDS= age related eye disease study) The #2 because it had a second iteration once they determined that people who are smokers, or even were past smokers had higher incidence of lung cancer. So they took out the betacarotene (from vitamin A).

ONE DIFFERENCE: it adds calcium to the formula. I didnt see that when I first ordered because under the section where it lists ingredients, it only mentions the AREDS2 protocol ingredients. In the picture though (and on my bottle), it shows calcium. If you are good with that, then all else is the same. Wish they would just call it, “AREDS2 with calcium”, then.

Before AREDS2, there was just AREDS. The original formula had beta carotene, which posed some dangers especially to smokers. Not sure if it is a now defunct formula (probably), or if AREDS2 is the total replacement. The study is all about AREDS2.

For those interested in AREDS2 for macular degeneration:
Are AREDS 2 supplements right for me?
–It depends what stage of AMD you have. If you have intermediate AMD in 1 or both eyes, they may be able to stop it from turning into late AMD.
A–REDS 2 supplements can’t prevent early AMD from developing into intermediate AMD. If your eye doctor tells you that you have early AMD, get a dilated eye exam at least once a year so your doctor can keep track of any changes.

So I dont have MD, but my opthomologist recommends lutein. The other ingredients in here (C, E, Copper, Zinc) are all things I normally take and am ok with. So I will finish up these bottles and likely keep with one of their other formulas.

There are a couple of brands that also have this specific formula, some use the “AREDS2” terminology, but use more of each ingredient, or add ingredient, so not actually adhering to the protocol in the study. The B&L Preservision is the only one I see that has same ingredients as the study, and yes that has a better price. But I am not here to rate on price. However, I will say that it is within range of other eye supplements.

If you are gunning for a high dose lutein and zeaxanthin, try their VisitVite 444 Formula as it contains 44mg and 4 mg respectively. Looking for support herbs, vitamins, and minerals, along with mid range dose of L & Z? they have several other formulas. Looking for some that dont contain certain ingredients, take a peek at all that they have to offer, as some contain copper and zinc, some dont.Good for those that have sensitivities, Etc

BTW, those that choose to go with higher dose L & Z, know that in some folks, large doses of carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin can cause ‘carotenodermia – a yellow-orange skin discoloration. It can look like jaundice, but the abnormal skin color can be removed with an alcohol swab’. Gotta say, this wouldnt stop me from taking it unless that actually happened. I have been adding in their 444 formula (high dose) a couple times a week on top of their other lower dose formulas.

I dont rate on price, we can all see the price before purchase, we all have different budgets, needs, preferences. Prices fluctuate, sometimes there are deals and coupons. So I leave that up to you. Know which ingredients you are looking for, then compare prices. ThisAREDS2 formula 30 servings per bottle. This is a 3 bottle set, making it a 3 month supply. Currently $70.85 for 3 bottles ($23.60 per bottle, or $0.79 per serving/day).

Can take both capsules at once, or divide between AM and PM. Take with some food, particularly fat as lutein works best with fat.

I have tried several from this brand, not sure yet which one I like best.

Like I said, they have several varieties, and I am slightly confused as to what I should take. I am mid 40s, have been experiencing changes in eyes, and it bothers me because it is affecting my reading time. I love books, and I find that my eyes get strained real quick. I rely on my Kindle for nearly all my reading needs. Current reading glasses aren’t cutting it, so back to ophthalmologist I go. I really blame a significant amount of screen time, especially my smartphone. Oy.

I’m making a concerted effort to consistently take my eye vitamins. It was recommended by my (and my husband’s) ophthalmologist to take lutein, and while I had gotten some I havent stuck with it. Now I am. So here I am. I have a few varieties by this company, so I will be taking something by them in similar formula for quite some time to come. I got them also for my husband to use, but I suspect I will be taking them. Most all provide some sort of supporting supplementation above and beyond lutein. Some have more lutein, some have less.

Early impression rating of 4. All seems fine, I just cant attest yet to true effectiveness. I can say that the capsules are easy to swallow, no digestive upset, no burping up flavors. Just keep in mind that these should be taken with a meal (lutein does best with fat).

BTW, if you are looking for the same dose used in AREDS2 studies, VitiVite has a formula that mimics that, AREDS2 doctor formulated macular eye supplement based on well known AREDS 2 study

I used to use Preservision, but it upset my stomach. These have less zinc and I don’t have any problem with them. They are expensive, though.

My mother had macular degeneration in both eyes, the wet version in one eye and the dry version in the other. By the time she passed away, she was nearly blind. When I handed her anything, she had to search for it. When we watched TV, I had to tell her who the characters were, even on the soaps she had watched for many years. She said their faces were just blobs, with no features.

Since macular degeneration is hereditary, I have been taking lutein with zeaxanthin for several years. I don’t want to suffer as my mother did. Her ophthalmologist recommended that she take it, so I figured it would help me to start taking it before I got it!! This AREDS 2 Select Eye Vitamins for Macular Degeneration was a disappointment to me. I didn’t read the strengths accurately or I would never have ordered it. Yes, it has the correct supplements plus some additional ones. It is sorely missing enough lutein and zeaxanthin, however.

This product has 10 mg of lutein per serving whereas my current product has 25 mg. I would have to take 2.5 times as much as directed to get the same amount of lutein as in my present product. The zeaxanthin in this product is only 2 mg compared to 5 mg in my present product. Once again, I would need to take 2.5 times as much as directed. At this rate, I would have only 36 servings in the three bottles. Since it is currently $70.85, that is $1.97 per day. My current product is only one tablet per day. It comes in a bottle of 150 tablets for $19.99, making it cost 13 cents per day!!

The difference in cost is astronomical!! I should have read the ingredients better or I would never have ordered them. I will stick with my other product. It is ironic, but the lady that checks your cart as you leave the store where I get them told me her grandson is an ophthalmologist and he told her they were the best eye supplement you can buy, so our doctor always said that the lady at the store recommended them!! He agreed with her, but he thought it was funny that she recommended them. I’ll never purchase this supplement so I cannot recommend it. It is just far too expensive!

From my wife Sarah: I think this is a good quality product. It’s free of the allergens I’m concerned about, including gluten, shellfish, tree nuts, fish, eggs, milk, soy, peanuts. The thing to be aware of is that this includes zinc and copper. It’s important to watch what you’re getting so you don’t get too much. Both of these can get too high in the body, with side effects. For that reason, I ended up getting the same product but without those too minerals.
