It’s a cream, it’s a gel.
It works.
When I put my nose up to the tube opening, the mint smell is front and center.
Although that is the case, the minty-ness is somewhat subdued once you actually apply this to your scrubby or whatever. It’s still there, but not so much that it makes your skin cold like some minty soaps (like that “all one” castile soap for instance).
It behaves differently, depending what you put this on.
I was trying out a silicone “sonic” body scrubber and like most of the other silicone scrubby things I’ve used, it took copious amounts of this to get a decent amount of lather.
On a sponge, a quarter size twirl of this produced gobbs of lather;
I suggest a sponge or a nylon scrubby cloth if you’re like me and prefer alot of lather without using massive amounts of product.
It has a nice feel on the skin and did not have a drying effect.
This time of year, when the showers are extra hot, I always use a post shower body moisturizer, so I can’t really say this would (or would not) have been enough moisture for my skin without having done that.
The tube is just big enough where you’ll want to put some in a travel size bottle if you want to take to the gym or wherever. It really is a “home” size tube; not optimized for travel; least not for me.

I’ve been using charcoal based tooth paste on and off for several years and love it. I have never used charcoal body wash and was very excited to try the Charcoal Cleansing Shower Cream from the Grandpa Soap Company. I found it worked very well at keeping my skin clear. It reminds me of the homemade soap bars that I sometimes use. The Charcoal Cleansing Shower Cream cleaned my skin without leaving a grimy, oily, slimy film. The cream rinses off very well. I don’t think it dried out my skin; however, I’ve always applied a body lotion after showering, especially during winter.
Most importantly, I’ve been using this product for two weeks and haven’t experienced any allergic reactions such as hives. I once used a grapefruit scented body wash that was marketed as preventing acne. It caused me to have a rash all over my torso. In order to rule out coincidence, I used the product again after the rash went away. The rash returned. This time, I immediately stopped using the product and my allergic reaction wasn’t as severe. Thankfully, I didn’t have any allergic reactions with the Charcoal Cleansing Shower Gel.
I love the large 9.5 fluid ounce tubes. I received two tubes: one for keeping and one for sharing. The plastic tube is strong and sturdy and can stand upright on its enormous cap. This makes it super easy for dispensing the cream because gravity will pull it down towards the opening. I normally squeeze the cream onto a wet washcloth and rub it literally all over my body. It is safe to use anywhere, even on my face. The two tubes that I received had been double bagged for extra protection. Underneath the cap was a protective foil that covered the nozzle; it was easy to remove. The two bags and foil prevented accidental spillage and deterred intentional tampering during shipping and handling.
If you believe in the cleansing power of charcoal (for teeth and body), then I suggest you purchase the Charcoal Cleansing Shower Cream from the Grandpa Soap Company. At the time of this review, I cannot tell you the price because it is listed as “currently unavailable.” Personally, I wouldn’t pay more than $13.99 to $15.99 for the two tubes. Also, I couldn’t find an expiration or best by date anywhere on the tubes. This wasn’t a game changer for me. Some high-end hygiene products have them, but most don’t.

SMELLS AMAZING/REFRESHING
The natural scents in this product come from spearmint, peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary. All those essential oils come together to make a very nice scent that is clean and masculine and non-floral. Due to the mints/eucalyptus, you will feel a bit of a tingle like you might from tea tree. However, the sensation is not excessive and I did not find it to be unpleasant.
CHARCOAL COMPONENT IS NOT LIKE SOOT
So, I will admit, I didn’t know much about charcoal soap. I fully expected that I would be washing my body with some sort of sooty product that would leave my shower looking like a mess. It was not at all like that. I took a photo of what the product looks like.
WHY CHARCOAL?
I know that they use activated charcoal in hospitals to absorb ingested toxins. Well, I read that this principle applies to skin care also. Body washes like this product neutralize toxins and impurities on the skin. The pores get cleaned out and the whole process is natural.
LATHER
I found this body wash to lather up really well. I didn’t have to use a lot of it to wash up.
GENEROUS SIZE AT THIS PRICE POINT
Given the natural ingredients and the effective cleansing, the price of this product is reasonable. If you do a search here on Amazon for comparable products, you’ll see that the pricing is on point.
GRANDPA SOAP COMPANY BRAND
I went to the company’s website and I read this this brand has a marvelous amount of history behind it. It all started with pine tar soap and just developed from there. They are a high end product without inflated prices.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I think of the many body washes I have used over the years, this one is in my top three (yeah, it’s that good). I like how clean I feel after using it and I like the smell (and so does my wife). I was pretty ignorant about charcoal products, but now I’m sold on them. If minty/eucalyptus scents smell good to you, then this product might be a very good choice for you.
