This is a very important nutrient for the eyes, but I do worry about the sulfites. I have not seen any other astaxanthin supplement with sulfites.
Moreover, this jar contains only 30 capsules.
And for 30 capsules, the price point is a bit much.
I love Swanson, generally, but this is not their best item.

I have three concerns about this product.
First, my doctor said the daily dose should be 12mg, and this is only 8mg.
Second, there are only 30 small softgels in here. Fortunately they used a small bottle – I’m amazed at brands who put 30 tiny pills in a huge bottle, so wasteful. But even though they used a small bottle, it’s still only half full. We’re facing a global plastics pollution crisis, and at the same time, the US is facing a plastics recycling crisis, where more than half of US cities do not have any meaningful recycling in place. They are finding plastics pollution in every corner of the ocean, even remote regions of the northern arctic. Brands have to be smarter about their packaging – I would have preferred they fill this bottle with 60 servings instead of 30.
Finally, it has a note that the product contains sulfites. I try my best to avoid sulfites – I would think anyone taking vitamins would be concerned about their health and would probably also want to avoid sulfites. But I’m confused because sulfites are not naturally occurring in astaxanthin. So are they added? I have submitted a question to the brand and hope they respond.
PS UPDATE – I contacted the brand, they say they label anything that potentially has over 10ppm sulfites, they have no testing or certification they can share. This may just be a generic warning label, but since there is no testing, I’m tossing the bottle.

Hubby asked me to get this for him, since he read it somewhere that takes away your joint pain. Hubby had pain in his shoulder like excruciating pain that was so uncomfortable to sleep at night. This item came fast. And he started taking this once a day for about a week, he noticed his pain is tolerable until it made it go away. He’s sleeping comfortably now and he can raise his arm doesn’t feel any pain at all. We would really recommend this to other people who’s also suffering this joint pain.

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant said to benefit the eyes, skin, heart, joints, and immune system. I’ve been taking Astaxanthin for eye health, for several years now.
This Swanson Astaxanthin contain 8 mg per softgel (one serving). But I consider 12 mg the ideal daily dosage. So I would take one softgel, and two softgels, on alternating days. That evens out to 12 mg per day.
I like that they’re softgels. Softgels, tinctures, and capsules are preferable to tablets, because tablets contain binders that can hinder absorption.

I have been taking astaxanthin for a while now. I was interested to see if these were as good as the others.
ARE THESE EASY TO SWALLOW?
I have had no issues taking these. The capsules are smaller (more like a larger Vitamin E) and they come in a small bottle which is great on the one hand, because no wasted bottle space, but the bottle can be hard to find among big ones too.
DO THEY HELP?
These seem to work as well as the others I have used for two things- pain and vision floaters.
ANY BAD REACTIONS?
I have had no bad reactions from taking these- 1 pill in the morning with water.
THE BOTTOM LINE
These pills seem to be as good as the others I have taken. The bottle is small so they do not put a few pills in a huge bottle.

FIVE STARS so far. These are handy to have and I must say I rather like the small bottle. Makes room for other vitamins instead of so many huge oversized bottles.
