Ive only had this product for a few days, but I’m already seeing results and love it! I originally bought this product to try and save my hands from the abuse they take at the gym. This balm is not too greasy, has a light smell, and so far is doing a nice job of repairing some rough patches on my hands. Surprisingly, I have found it to be highly effective at lessening the itch of the numerous bug bites on my legs and quickly healing those that I’ve scratched. My body seems to be slow to heal after I’ve scratched open bug bites- I’ve had some marks for months. However, after using this product for 2 days, I can already see all of the bites (old and new) healing. Plus, this has worked better to calm the itch than any other product I’ve tried.

Let me start off by saying: I love this product, it contains a great combination of botanicals/herbs that work in a synergistic manner to provide relief from bug bites, bruises, scrapes, etc. The ingredients in it are all well-documented (some significantly throughout human history) as having a beneficial effect on skin damage/scarring. I use a variety of Svasthya’s products, most notably their face balm, which I use daily. For instance, when I went to Key West, my back and arms were practically infested with noseeum bites, which were warm, raised, and EXTREMELY itchy! This product helped relieve the itch, heal the skin, and keep the area sanitized–when nothing conventional was working!
HOWEVER, while the labeling mentions “it should only be used on older wounds,” they fail to mention WHY.
Comfrey, one of the herbs used in this product, *cannot* be used on open wounds of any kind! That means that you can’t use it on burns that cause blistering or exposure of the lower dermal layers OR fresh wounds. The wounds have to be in the late stages of healing, completely closed, with no exposed subcutaneous/dermis tissue (anything below the epidermis, or top layer of exposed skin — “living tissue”). Comfrey contains some pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic to the liver and can do damage at higher doses. While Comfrey is safe to use topically, exposure to those alkaloids increases significantly when it has access to the bloodstream or if used on mucous membranes (lips, nips, sexual organs).
You should wait until you’re sure a cut has closed below the exposed skin, as any product that increases the speed of epidermal healing can cause the tissue to close top-down, which can lead to abscesses–icky!
It should also be noted that products containing comfrey should not be used in people with hepatitis or impaired liver function, as well as pregnant/breastfeeding women. Although complications are relatively rare, they’ve been noted enough times throughout history to facilitate at least a basic warning on the label! I’ll up my review to 5-stars if they commit to including a warning!

The product itself is lovely; the scent is light and the salve is moisturizing. It comes in a metal tin, which I intend to reuse when I finish the product. I live in South Florida, so when I received the product it looks like it melted in transit and then rehardened into the tin, which made it impossible to remove from the tin. No biggie, TBH, because I just applied it directly from the tin or I put my fingers in and removed a bit of product and applied it to my skin. I use this exclusively on my extremely hard, rough, calloused feet in an effort to keep them soft. The product works effectively, but unfortunately I won’t be buying it again because they use a strip of plastic to deal the tin, and I’m trying to reduce the plastic we use in our household. It may not seem like a big deal, a little strip of plastic, but it is to me. This is why I took a star away. This product would be zero waste if it wasn’t for that plastic strip. I can get a salve that works just as efficiently, plastic free, from a different shop (not Amazon-they make no guarantees and I’m tired of trying to find eco-friendly products here only to be thwarted by plastic packaging).

This stuff is great. I’m a diabetic who wears an omnipod and uses a continuous glucose monitor. Lately, I’ve been having increasingly severe skin reactions to the adhesive used by my medical devices. I’ve found a solution but my skin was very red, painful, sensitive, and itchy where the reactions were. I’ve been applying this balm to those areas about twice a day and the healing process has sped up considerably. There’s no burning or itching anymore and the skin there is much softer and more hydrated. The color is even returning back to normal now. I’m definitely ordering more. I’m going to make sure that I never run out of this stuff. My mom tried it and now she keeps taking it and using it for any persistent dry or itchy spots she has. Winter is almost here so her skin is very dry. I’m going to order another tin for her as well.
