Male / Late 20’s.
I think I’ve only ever written one review prior to this but I wanted to share my experience with it. Please be aware that I am not a health professional and I am speaking from personal experience only. What works for me, may not for the next person. I advise anybody to seek medical advice from a profession doctor.
Since around January 2020 I’ve noticed my hair falling out in clumps. If I were to run a comb through it, the comb would have dozens of strands. If I were to tug on my hair, I’d have a handful. In the shower, I would notice around 50+ strands fall out. It’s been such an exhausting experience. Prior to this, I would see possibly 1-5 strands of hair during washes. Hair-fall was a rarity to say the least. I have thick, black wavy hair. I also have a lot of males in my family, none with hair-loss.
I believe it may be chronic telogen effluvium, being that it’s been occurring for over 6 months. I’m currently at the 10 month mark — or there about. I have spoken to a doctor and she indicated that it may be stress. It may also be my iron levels which I am testing soon.
Some months back I bought a book by Dr. Llaila Afrika. The book had a small 2 page section on hair-loss. Bear in mind that the author – recently deceased – had a head full of hair right up to his passing at the age of 74. I read the 2 pages, put the book away and kept coming back to it, trying to see if there was anything that I overlooked. During this time I am simply hoping that the issue will resolve by itself. It didn’t. My hair has been thinning for the past 10 months and If I were to put a number on it, I’d say I’ve lost around 30/40% of the hair on my scalp.
In the book, Dr. Llaila Afrika listed numerous minerals, vitamins, foods and plants for hair loss, as well as some common causes. He listed one thing: L-Methionine – used to reduce hair fall. Take with Vitamin C for better efficiency.
So 1 month ago I purchased 3 months worth of Solgar’s L-Methionine. I purchased it alongside Solgar’s Biotin, Solgar’s L-Arginine, a vitamin C supplement from the chemist, organic peppermint oil and organic cold-pressed coconut oil.
I’ve now been using all of these supplements for 1 month.
Prior to this, I was substituting with various supplements. I ran a 3-6 month course of Nu-U’s Biotin. I noticed absolutely no difference off this, despite taking it for 3-6 months — daily. Prior to Nu-U’s Biotin supplement, I was once again taking Solgar’s Biotin. I notice that my nails grow very fast when taking Solgar’s version of Biotin, as well as them being much stronger. However, I didn’t notice any difference in my hair-fall. I also drink a lot of water which is important when taking water-soluble vitamins such as Biotin.
Mid-Late October I begin taking L-Methionine. One a day before breakfast, with a Vitamin C capsule and a large glass of water.
4 weeks later – for the first time in 10 months – I notice that my hair FINALLY appears to have stopped falling out in clumps. For the past 7 days, I’ve only noticed around 5-10 strands per wash. My comb is also no longer filled with strands of hair. Over the past 10 months, I have gone a day or two where I’ve noticed little hair-fall, only to be reminded the following day that the problem hasn’t resolved. So this is the first week-long period where I’ve noticed my hair-fall being back to normal.
As well as this, I began applying melted organic coconut and peppermint oil. I would put a teaspoon of coconut oil in a glass bowl, melt it down and drop 5-10 drops of peppermint oil in to it and mix them together. Apply the oil to damp hair and massage it in to the scalp. Allow it to sit for about 30-60 minutes – sometimes longer. I do this every day or 2. I started all of these treatments within the same week.
During this time I am also taking Solgar’s L-Arginine. L-Arginine is listed as a vasodilator. Strictly from my research, it is used to increase blood flow. I don’t notice much difference from this supplement, maybe I haven’t been taking it long enough. Prior to this, I was taking Nu-U’s L-Arginine supplement — to no noticeable difference.
I am a firm believer in the long-term game. When you’re dealing with your hair, you should be aiming for 3-6 months worth of persistent treatment before you even begin to see results. Why? This is because the natural human hair cycle takes about 3-6 months from fall to regrowth. Always be weary of those that indicate they’ve seen an increase in things like thickness only a week or two in to treatment. From what I understand, it’s a virtual impossibility.
I am going to run my 3 month course of L-Methionine and hopefully see a continued reduction in hair-fall. Hopefully, I’ll be able to see more signs of regrowth at the start of 2021.
I’m going to pinpoint my reduced hair-fall to either L-Methionine or the essential oils. Either way, I am very happy right now!
I hope this helps someone and thanks for reading.

Take an hour before bedtime.
PROS
– Works! I’m managing to fall asleep faster – and *stay asleep*!
– Much cheaper (and more effective) than Huberman’s “sleep cocktail” recommendation.
– Helping me normalise my sleep pattern.
– No more phone scrolling through the night – this just knocks me out.
CONS
– Can wake up a little groggy in the morning for the first hour or so. Is this sleep or sedation? Don’t know – all I know is that it beats lying awake until the sun comes up.
