I hate taking vitamins and supplements. My wife has a daily regime of several specially selected pills and supplements, takes them religiously, and never seems to get sick. Its disgusting. I, on the other hadn’t, believe in the three SSS diet – posts of sugar, salt and easy Satisfaction! Lots of carbs, may daily friends! However, to stop the ENDLESS nagging, I finally went to the doc and he ran a blood panel to see where I was. Result? Low on Iron. So I take one of these every week. Now, after about 6 months, I must reluctantly admit to the wife and my doc I feel better. Stiller getting her daily diet of misery – Kombucha, organic everything, non-GMO and gluten free. I still eat anything I want, but I take a good daily vitamin, one of these each week, and a D-3. No more nagging. And I can eat what I want, not be miserable, and die happy when my time comes. If you are reading this, you are probably either an health freak or just like me, taking these reluctantly. I am not a gym rat… I exercise by stabbing the TV remote. But, I was feeling little low on energy, so I reluctantly went and had a blood panel dent o see exactly what nutrients I needed. My doc was very particular about what iron supplement I should take, and in what dosage, due to the dangers of taking too much iron. Whatever. The deal with the Wife Unit was one blood test, then take only what I had to. So, within a month, I was feeling better. With all the salt, Sugar and carbs I wanted. Fantastic! And I had the Doctor’s note to say I only need THIS, not handfuls of THAT.
My extraordinary health is a genetic blessing from my parents. I have such good blood pressure and chloresterol readings that my wife is insanely jealous. But thanks to THIS pill, and a daily men’s vitamin, and a D-3, my doc is off my back and the wife is not allowed to NAG me. I told her, this is why I bought you a sh*tload of life insurance. I want to eat what I want, and die happy when my time comes. My dad made it to within three weeks of turning turning 100. If they don’t smack a tree at night or get shot or run over, my family all lives into their late 90s, so there. And half of them cooked with lard, drank all the adult beverages they wanted, and died all their veggies, such as they were. So, now that I take one of these suckers every week, I am doomed to live long enough to wear out a couple more rodent-sized weenie dogs and to eat my way thru another couple tons of tasty baked goods.

I have an iron deficiency. Other iron supplements cause digestive issues. I don’t have any issues with Solgar Gentle Iron. This is why I think it’s a great supplement.

I’m seriously impressed with Solgar’s Gentle Iron, but I got off to a shaky start. The first time I took it (2 capsules on the 1st try), I became dizzy and queasy and felt really unwell. I contacted my doctor about the symptoms and ended up being seen to rule out an allergic response. I was told to wait a week and then try just one capsule and watch my response, and I’m really glad I followed that advice because it’s turned out to be an amazing iron supplement.
I’ve never been able to tolerate an iron supplement, either liquid or a more standard form, to the point where even a multivitamin containing iron would make me so nauseous that I’d stop taking them within a week. This is the very first iron supplement that does not cause me any GI distress or unpleasantness, so for the first time in decades, I can actually take an iron supplement regularly. I can’t report any side effects other than the initial weird reaction I had, and that is great because I’m pretty sensitive to medications and am likely to get side effects if there are any. After about a month or so I increased my dose from 1 per day to 2 and it’s been fine.
I’ve not had my blood tested again since starting, so I can’t report any lab changes yet. I did notice however, about 3 weeks in, that my fingernails became more opaque and white. While my nails have always grown very long since I was a child, they’ve been very flimsy and the tips almost transparent for the better part of a year. My hair had also become very dry and weak as well with much more shedding than normal, and that seems to be stabilizing. I’ve also experienced a pretty major improvement with my periodic limb movement disorder, and it has eased some cardiac symptoms I was experiencing since I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. While I’ve been taking an excellent magnesium supplement for both cardiac and PLMD symptoms for a couple of years, I did not get results as good as those I’ve gotten with the iron supplement.
The only downside of the product for me is the no food for an hour prior or for 2 hours afterward, and that it has to be at least 4 hours from my thyroid medication, but that is not the fault of the product at all. I also take 1000 mg of a Vit. C that does not have any ingredients that can actually hamper the absorption of iron (check for this if you’re going to take Vit. C with iron!) with each dose.
For me, this is the only supplement I’ve found that I can tolerate to address my low ferritin, and the lack of GI side effects is marvelous. I have a whole foods diet with a lots of rich greens and grass-fed meats that should give me great iron absorption, but it’s not been enough, so I’m happy that there is an inexpensive and quality supplement that can do more than all of my good food choices. I was also concerned that a vegan source of iron would not work as well, but I’m confident this is a great and effective source of ferritin and will post lab tests when they’re done (my ferritin range has been between 19-27 for many years).
