I purchased this in hopes of making a dent in my chronic urticaria (hives). They appear on my face and neck, sometimes chest and arms, after exposure to SOMETHING or perhaps, EVERYTHING. No doctor or derm has yet to figure it out. It’s been a 4 year battle now, and it sucks. It sucks my confidence, my esteem, my happiness. The only thing prior to this purchase that helped was Hydroxyzine HCL and Desonide cream. The hydroxyzine is a 1st gen antihistamine and also used as a sedative. While that can be nice sometimes (heh), I despise feeling like that all the time. Desonide is a moderate grade corticosteroid cream that will thin the skin over time, make wound healing slow, disturb the natural bacterial and fungal balance of skin, and age the user. Not what I’m going for.
Hydoxyzine breaks down into the metabolite Cetirizine, sold OTC as Zyrtec – a 2nd gen antihistamine. Minimal drowsiness, but less action. I was taking it daily anyway, as it helped a little. It wasn’t cutting it though, and every spring this ..issue gets much worse. I have already tried pretty much every other supplement and topical, to no avail.
I read a study comparing the action of Butterbur to Cetrizine ( http: // http://www.bmj.com/content/324/7330/144 ). Virtually identical action, no side effects, so I bought it.
This stuff works. It works better than Zyrtec. It works as well as the Hydroxyzine. I am amazed and thrilled. It also works pretty well on my regular, run of the mill Hayfever. .

My new neurologist recommended Butterbur to me @ 75 mg twice a day, so I take 1 in the morning and 2 in the evening. I decided to try it, as I have very frequent migraines. It took about 5 weeks before I thought I could tell anything. I have been taking it for about 6 months now.
I can tell when I haven’t taken it for a few days, or if I accidentally miss a couple of nights in a row. It has seemed to help reduce the frequency and severity of my migraines. I can’t say that it is a miracle or anything, as I still have migraines and related symptoms. But my baseline headache has gone from a 5 to a 3 (out of 10), most of the time. I do still get 7-8 level headaches or higher, but I’m not having them several times a month, or last for 3+ days since I have been taking Solaray Butterbur.
I did try a different brand of Butterbur for 2 weeks because I could not find the Solaray brand locally (which is what I had been taking). I did not finish the bottle of the other brand, because my headaches started getting worse. It felt like I had not taken any Butterbur at all.
I have read about it helping with allergies, which I also have. I also take 2 allergy shots twice a week, so I don’t know if that would change the expected results – but I have found NO allergy relief from taking this at all. That was not the reason I started taking it, just thought it would be a nice side effect, if it worked that way.
Even without the help for allergies, I’m still very happy with this product and now generally order 5+ bottles at a time.

My daughter suffers from chronic migraines. She would get 4-5 a week, and either spend the night vommitting, or be in bed by 5…no life for a 10 year old. Our doctor recommended Butterbur as an alternative to the pricey prescription solution (with tons of possible side effects). After some research we decided that Butterbur might be a safer option, for us. We’ve never made a better decision! The first week, she had two migraines- but I would categorize the second as more of a bad headache. Since then, she hasn’t had a single migraine, and it’s been over a month! She’s so happy, that we don’t even have to remind her to take it! Good product, definitely worked for us as described. Oh- our daughter only takes one 50mg capsule in the morning, so it works well for her, at only half the dose.

I didn’t have allergies when I was a kid. However, I started having trouble with seasonal allergies starting about a decade ago. They have progressively gotten worse, and for the last couple years (maybe due to the area we now live) I have had varying degrees of discomfort on a year round basis. I have tried various homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, and a variety of different medicines. Zyrtec has been the pill of choice for some time, but I never feel 100% when I’m on it. Consistently I have headaches, serious red eye, and sinus trouble even when taking the tablets twice a day.
About a month ago I came across some articles about Butterbur for the relief of allergy symptoms. Several studies and articles suggested that many patients in their trials, especially those who suffer from grass allergies, found a similar or higher level of relief with the Butterbur compared to other leading allergy medicines. I figured it was worth a shot, and the monthly cost is lower than what I have been spending on medicines.
I’m pleased to say that, for me, Butterbur has done a far superior job at curbing my allergy symptoms. The articles I read suggest that you not be on allergy medicines and Butterbur at the same time, so I took a chance and quit the Zyrtec cold turkey. The relief was noticeable on day one. The drowsiness is gone, I’m sleeping better, the red eye has essentially disappeared, and my sinuses have been clear on all but a couple days this month. There have been two days this month that the symptoms have come back (still not to the same level as what I would say was my “norm” on Zyrtec), and both days were when I went on a bike ride through a route that is beautiful but notoriously causes my allergies to spike. Typically it takes a couple days to get back to my baseline after these rides. This time, the symptoms disappeared within a few hours.
This is a welcome relief. It has been at least 5-6 years since I have consistently felt this good. Do your homework though, and make sure you find a reputable provider if you are going to try this stuff. There are some naturally occurring things in Butterbur that can be toxic to your liver, and I read some articles that suggest that people with liver or kidney problems might want to stay away.
