For the fiber content, this beats the price-by-volume of even generic/store brand Metamucil by a mile. No flavoring or added sugar to pad the volume and increase the cost, just psyllium husk.

To do some math, the 1-lb tub of this fiber is currently $39.99 and contains 1,800 total grams of fiber which calculates to $0.022 per gram. A cannister of sugar-free Metamucil costs $32.98 and contains 540 grams at $0.058 per gram which is 2.61 times higher. If It’s Just fiber cost as much per gram, it would be $104.

Flavor-wise, if you have an issue with it (I never have), mix it with some Crystal Light or similar which you can get for cheap. 1 packet makes 2 quarts. Just add 1/8th of a teaspoon to your mix and shake, but even 1/16th would help mask any weird flavors.

Yes, soluble fiber will gel up and create clumps, especially if you add it to cold water. Invest in a shaker bottle. My Blender Bottle makes quick work of the mixing so that there are no clumps. Just swirl it around in between drinks to ensure that there is no settling at the bottom. Drink it fast before it has time to gel so that it gels up in your stomach where the soluble fiber can do its work. You may also consider investing in a capsule loading machine (no longer available on Amazon due to DEA crackdown regulations, but you can search them online and buy direct from manufacturers). I use a combination of my own capsules and drink mixes.

As for turning bread purple, why are people giving 1-star reviews for that? Who knows why that’s happening, but this is a fiber supplement. You can add it to food, but it’s not their fault that some weird reaction is occurring between your dough and this fiber. Why not just enjoy the novelty of purple bread without the need for food coloring?

I’ve been buying the 1-lb bags, but I went all out and got the 4-lb tub this time. Now I have a free tub to use once I’ve gone through all the fiber.

It’s simply Psyllium Husk fiber; that’s essentially it. I use it in baking to increase the fiber content in certain foods. I’ve also mixed it into cold beverages to boost my daily fiber intake. It’s tasteless, although I’ve never tried it directly from the bag—I wouldn’t recommend it either, as it’s such a fine powder.

When mixed into a drink, the natural properties of the fiber do not dissolve, so it’s best to mix and drink immediately to prevent clumping.

An unexpected side effect in baking is that depending on what you mix it with, it can change the color of your baked goods. For instance, I’ve made egg “bites” that turned out with a green hue. I’ve also baked some “keto” style bread that turned a cool purple. There’s no change in taste or texture, just an unexpected burst of color.

I found this product mixes well. There’s not a huge glob left at the bottom of the glass. I like to mix with mango juice so it has flavor. Then it has the consistency of pear juice and goes down easy. It’s delicious and I’ve noticed a great difference and improvement in my bowel movements. Was recommended by medical professional for improving too soft of stools.

  4. Tray

Has a muddy colour and taste. Tried the first serving and will not finish the rest. Bag does not reseal properly. Will never buy this brand again.

Traveling In Europe I found pure psyllium husks that was easy to stir. I figured Id try that here instead of metamucil the orange taste and cost gets annoying when you use it as often as I have for as long as I have.
First try tablespoon, clumps, bad news. I have to use a wire whisk every time. The taste is terrible, and I don’t remember european psyllum husk being this bad. It wasn’t ground up so maybe less surface area for taste buds.
But it WORKS! And its cheap. If you have a handmixer, don’t mind taste can gulp 16oz in one shot then go for it. A lot of fiber with meals esp heavy ones is just so good, it forces your liver to keep making bile which pulls LDL from blood stream. I eat saturated fat daily and have low LDL, and my younger sibling is taking cholesterol meds, heart disease is how everyone in my family passes. I just use metamucil religiously 2-3x a day for 18 years.

This is the only psyllium I buy. Good quality and very fine. I add it to meals rather than just put in water. Fiber is so important so I’ll keep buying this brand!

I bought this for GF baking and was disappointed that my read turned out PURPLE! I later learned that whole psyllium doesn’t cause the purple coloring. The product is effective. The purple is off-putting.

This stuff tastes like dirt but it works very well. LoL. I drink it with cranberry juice VERY QUICKLY and it dissolves in the juice much better than water. If you can tolerate the taste, GO FOR IT!

I like that this is a simple powder with a small serving size (1 tsp) that still has 4 g of insoluble fiber. I looked everywhere for something comparable, and I haven’t found anything that meets the nutrition facts. This was important to me, as other brands/capsules don’t have that much insoluble fiber OR require you to take like 6+ horse pills a day… pass.

That being said, this stuff really does taste like dirt and it doesn’t dissolve (as advertised). Kudos to folks in the reviews saying they can chug their glass of water and move on with their day. I wanted to vomit every time I tried that.

I was able to do what someone else here recommended, which was stirring it into another powder they put in their daily drink (for me, that’s collagen I mix into my morning tea). I mixed the 2 powders together with a fork, then mixed that really good into my tea, then kept mixing it as the tea cooled/as I drank it. Yes, you will still get tiny clumps, and yes, at the very end you kind of have to chug whatever dregs are left at the bottom. But A) it doesn’t taste nearly as bad, and B) it’s much easier to chug the last 2 sips of flavored, mostly dissolved tea than an 8 oz glass of dirt.
