30 months ago, I eliminated all soy from my diet and decided to substitute hemp protein in it’s place. My consumption is 1 pound per week. The hemp is incorporated into Trader Joe’s “French Village” non-fat, plain yogurt along with Met-Rx “Protein Plus Vanilla”. I consume this for 3 of my 5 meals – 7 days a week. I am regimented and very strict about my diet and have been consistent for 8 years with this routine. The first 5 years of this period were when I was using soy protein.
Originally, I chose the Manitoba Harvest “Hemp Pro 50” 5 pound container from Amazon, but there were several instances of it not being in stock, and at one point in 2012, it was removed from Amazon’s ‘Subscribe & Save’ program. This led me to Bob’s Red Mill.
The Bob’s Red Mill is identical to the Manitoba “Hemp Pro 50” as far as I can tell. Bob’s is a little pricier than the Manitoba, but always in stock and just less drama. Since it’s recommended that all hemp protein be refrigerated upon opening, placing 1 pound at a time in the fridge instead of a 5 pound tub is much more convenient for me.
I’m pleased with Bob’s Red Mill, and intend to keep using them. On a side note, during this 30 months of use, I’ve been sick only once (head cold) and I now seem to not have seasonal allergies. It is somewhat surreal to observe periodic illnesses sweep through my my workplace and family, yet remain unaffected. I am writing this in the spring, and many around me are quite miserable with allergies, yet mine do not flare up. Severe allergies and sinusitis were an annual experience for me, and often lead to a yearly sinus infection. This has not occurred in these 3 years of hemp consumption.
No one that I’ve shared this with has been willing to consistently consume this hemp protein in order to confirm my anecdotal observation. If you’re crazy like me, and have found the same to be true (or not), feel free to leave me a comment. I’d love to hear from you.

I’ve only been using Hemp Protein for a short time, but I use a lot, so price-wise, this package was the way to go!
I add 4 tbsp to my Barlean’s Greens Chocolate Silk shake made with 12oz unsweetened vanilla almond milk each morning. I use one of those shaker cups with the whisk ball, and when mixed properly, it’s not that gritty. I like the nutty taste hemp protein adds!
also great for baking- replace up to 25% of flour with hemp protein in just about any recipe. Zucchini Apple Banana brownies.. they were green, but good!
nothing exploded in transit! the four 16oz bags came well sealed, the bags are a white-ish color (not see through) and came in a Bob’s Red Mill display box, stamped on front and side with lot# and exp date- bags have mating information.
impressed with the quality and price- I’ll be a repeat shopper of this and other Bob’s Red Mill products.

This only applies to me, but I had my gall bladder removed and had a major dietary change. After no two days being the same and being stuck at home due to the unpredictability of my system, I read that Hemp could help. Having changed my diet completely, adding Hemp has made a significant improvement in my digestive system and my health overall. I have been making smoothies out of this Hemp for one year now and I can say that I’ve seen an improvement in some of my blood tests that I didn’t expect and it solved my digestive issues. Again, this could just be me, but I add 3 TBSP of this powder to 10 ounces of Soy Milk, a banana, and a heaping Tsp of dark Cocoa every night.
If you’re going to start using this Hemp powder, start with 1 teaspoon and work your way up to 3 Tablespoons per day. I started feeling and seeing results right away and other improvements when I had my yearly blood panel completed. Hemp helps with so many things. I encourage you to research it and see which ones apply to you.
Down side – it’s gritty and has a icky taste if you just add water. The Soy Milk and banana make a tasty treat that has a nice texture and if you add dark chocolate powder, it is even better. Pulverize it into a smoothie and it is easy to drink every day.
I will continue to purchase so I can continue to drink banana smoothies every day.

I reserve 5-stars for the best of the best. We’ve gotten several brands of hemp protein powder over the years, and really liked Ruth’s brand. It’s excellent, has a much better texture than some of the others, and we’ve stayed with it for at least a couple of years. But with a good price on the Bob’s Red Mill brand, I decided to try it out, even though there were four bags in the purchase. It’s at least as good as the Ruth’s, and the price was better. Texture is fine, there is not nearly as much of the distinctive taste of some other brands, and even what’s there with the Bob’s brand is not at all a problem – it just adds “character” to the fruit shakes in which it’s mainly used.
Suggestion: go to a warehouse club, buy the largest bag of frozen fruit they’ve got to save money (multi-variety, cut up, fresh frozen), put it in a good blender (we use a Vitamix), add some hemp protein powder, and some other powdered flavoring or other ingredient if desired, a little water, and you have a highly nutritious smoothie with good protein content, several servings of fruit, and whatever else you put in it. We make these a meal once a day on most summer days.
Bottom line, it looks like we’ve changed brands for the foreseeable future. Great product.

It’s fine. It tastes like other hemp protein powders, but the texture is decidedly grittier. I’m still using it, though, as it isn’t a major turnoff.

This is a quality product from a well-known company. Haven’t had any problems with quality control. Been using hemp protein for several years, found this as an alternative to Nutiva. Only wish it came in larger bags to save plastic.
