I just like hot chocolate as a general rule, but it’s been difficult to find a premade powder that doesn’t fall flat for taste or mixability.
Enter Perk Energy, Mexican Hot Chocolate flavor. Honestly, I’m not usually one to down a bunch of caffeine outside of my coffee, so I was looking at this more from the hot chocolate standpoint. However, I will tell you that this delivers on both fronts!
Pros: – It tastes like Mexican hot chocolate! There is the bit of chili spice, the slight hint of coconut with the cocoa. I mixed mine with water alone and it is delicious! I know it isn’t winter yet, but I can’t wait to finish shoveling the driveway and having a cup of this to make sure I don’t pass out on the couch. Also, I could see me mixing a coffee into this to make a mean tasting mocha! (Disclosure: there is a warning about the amount of caffeine you should consume within a day, so unless you’re using decaf, take heed).
– It comes with a scoop! I will take some points away for needing to dig it out, but just having a scoop makes proportioning the product so much easier! I really appreciated having one.
Cons: If I had to hit it with anything, I think the sucralose gives it just the slightest hint of an artificial aftertaste. Although I hadn’t read the ingredients until afterward, I could just tell there was a sweetener in there that wasn’t just sugar. Look, you’re already hitting me with 100mg of caffeine, so why not just round it out with a good dose of sugar? My guess is that the bulk would either increase packaging size or decrease servings per package. Either way, its pretty minor compared to the overall taste.
Lastly, this is an energy drink, so it would probably be useful to know that the caffeine does what it is supposed to do. I replaced my usual mid-morning coffee with this and it definitely picked me up more than my usual cup of joe.
When they say “really, really ridiculously good tasting, they’re not kidding! Too bad I’ll not be able to share it with my kids… (sorry, not sorry!).

This was tried by two people in the family, and this is our experience:
My mother: I have tried this for one week, and the first day I wasn’t sure about whether it boosted my energy. After that, however, I can say that I have felt more energy than I have in a long time. It’s not like a burst or over-the-top-type of energy; more like I just feel like getting up and doing things. I’m 76 and I can say I have gotten more done than I have in a long time. I have the hot chocolate and is exactly what it tastes like with no side / aftertastes. I do feel a slight spacy about a half an hour after drinking it, but that goes away almost immediately. Will buy again!
Me: While I haven’t tried this as long as my Mom, I did feel something right away. I’ve been pretty lethargic lately and had trouble sustaining a ‘get up and go’ mode, so I wasn’t getting a lot done. I’m already a heavy caffeine drinker (soda) and wasn’t sure how much effect this would have on me. But one 8 oz cup is more caffeine than a 20oz soda, and a short time after drinking it I definitely noticed a difference. I was able to work on projects longer and sustain my momentum, unlike before.
The taste is good, too. It absolutely does taste like hot chocolate, though we add a little more water to it because it can be a little strong. But I was expecting some kind of unexpected taste that I wouldn’t like; this is what it says on the label as far as taste.
As for energy, I’ve tried energy drinks in the past and didn’t like how they made me feel; they were too much caffeine. This has been a nice balance of giving me more than soda but not so much that I feel too wired. I like the results, and I agree with the statement above: I would definitely buy this again, though the price is a bit higher than I’d like to pay. But if I continue getting these results, I would pay it.

This Perk Energy Original Mexican Hot Chocolate tastes exactly like it’s name and packs the same energy punch that the other flavors do.
I tried the Horchata flavor 1st and really like that one a lot. This flavor is good, but not as good as the Horchata, imo. That’s just me.
It tastes very chocolaty and mixes well. I did not use hot water, as per instructions. I recently received a coffee maker with a frother accessory and finally have a use for it.
I put one scoop (which is too long to replace properly in the container) in the frother and about 8 oz of room temp water and place it on the frother. Delicious and fast. Cool how the frother heats up the drink.
I crunched up some nutmeg to top mine.
The energy levels provided, for me, have been really good. I’m an avid coffee drinker and this has been a replacement trial for me.
I thought I’d miss the coffee, but truly have not.
I’ve had 13 hour days this week and with one serving of Perk drink in the morning, my days have been full and steady. No jitters or crashes. Sleep has come easily at night and you can’t beat the caloric intake.
I haven’t even been as hungry during the day as usual. Great side effect!
As others stated, the caffeine intake is 100 mg per serving and suggestions to not exceed 400 mg per day.
I may start bringing a 2nd serving with me for late afternoon bc the taste is so good, as well as the added vitamins and protein.
I looked all over the jar before finding the caffeine amount. It’s not listed in the ingredients, but is listed on the side label. See pic.
As for the cost…yikes. It’s up there. Especially for those of us who watch pennies and try to cut costs at home by brewing our own.
However, if you are someone who generally stops by specialty coffee shops, then this is probably a better deal per drink.
At this time, it appears there is a coupon available. A great time to get several flavors to find your favorite.
