What an upgrade in getting cold and heat therapy to my back! This BodyMed Hot and Cold Therapy Back Belt is definitely the best for the lumbar area I’ve ever had. The gel pack is pulled into my lumbar arch so the cold/heat is right up against my skin even while sitting or standing – I don’t have to lay down on it. Including 2 gel packs makes it convenient to follow the recommendation to alternate heat and cold. The stretchy, soft wraparound belt is incredibly comfortable compared to previous back belts and adjustable in small increments until it fits just right. You can even wrap it around other body parts. The build quality is top notch with high quality materials and workmanship. I don’t recall seeing a hook & loop textile like this before where the hook side doesn’t cause the loop side to fray as they’re pulled apart. I’m old and it’s amazing how far we’ve come through my lifetime with hook & loop, gel packs and neoprene textiles.
I appreciate the packaging is a mylar bag to freeze the packs in since I keep gel packs wrapped in zip type bags in the freezer, mostly so they don’t pick up freezer smells (and to contain possible leakage.) TBH, this stinks when first opened so I was worried it would be the other way around and the food would need to be protected, but the smell is dissipating with time.
Your body type has to be just perfect for this to work very well. I have a larger midsection, mostly like rectangle body and the strap that goes around the front digs in a little bit too much. I do use this laying on my back and it works well. I do find my pain is relieved.. It is very nice to have it stay on my body while walking and moving around. The ease of use is Nice as you can step into it and pull it up if you happen to have shoulder issues and can’t grab it from the back. It does easily soak in the smells of your freezer, so, it’s very important to put this in a Ziploc bag. It does work very well but, it includes a thin ice pack – I feel I get about 7 minutes of good freezing type of cold.
Why did you pick this product vs others?:
This belt is great because I can keep Ice on my back and I don’t have to sit still, I can walk, work or drive. Covers a big area and is good quality. I always have to have an ice pack on within reach because it’s the first thing I grab if I pull a back muscle.
I hope this review and pics were helpful
This is a very good heating/cooling back pad. I would say it’s really 4.5 stars. It comes with two gel packs, so you can actually put one in the freezer for two hours, and pop one in the microwave for, in my case, one minute, so that you can do alternating heat and cold. After one minute in the microwave at 30 second increments, I got over 15 minutes of deep, penetrating heat. If you put it in the freezer for about two hours, it will last for way over the recommended 20 minutes of ice therapy. The included belt is a little bit thin material-wise, but it is serviceable, will fit a variety of waste sizes, and also has a convenient pocket to hold the gel pack. Instructions are on the mylar Ziploc bag that you can also use to store this. The current price is $27, which is the most I would spend on this, as that’s a bit on the expensive side, but you do get two gel packs, and it does work well. Packaging is not really conducive for gift giving.
Over the years, I’ve probably had a half dozen strap-on cold/hot therapy products for the lower back. I think this is my favorite. Messing around with big ice packs, flimsy belts, batteries, or plugging into the wall is overkill. This product hits my needs dead on. The belt is simple, lightweight, and stays in place. It conveniently comes with two perfectly sized/weighted gel pack inserts: one I’ll keep in the freezer when I want it cold and the other for microwaving when I want heat.
This bit of kit is a surprisingly nice way to apply heat on my back. I even have it on right now.
The belt is made of comfortable fabric with a velcro fastener at the front. It comes with two gel packs. The belt itself only needs one pack at a time (it gets inserted into a thin cloth pouch to rest against my back). The gel packs need to be removed before washing the belt.
One note, the belt has a pretty strong chemical odor when it arrives, I advise washing it before wearing it. Also, make sure the velcro is secured before washing or every sock in the wash will find the hook side.
I don’t intend to use this with cold, so I can not comment on how effective it is for that.
I like this belt (like I said, I’m wearing it as I sit in my office chair to type). I can certainly recommend it for folks who need the warmth for lower back pain.
I was impressed at the quality of this lower back hot/cold pack. I like the option of heat or cold and the gel packs are easily inserted into the neoprene belt. The material is soft and easily adjustable on the body where you may need it. You know when you suffer with pain you tend to have multiple items for relief. I am finding this is my go to as it is convenient and easy to roll up and store when not in use.
Why did you pick this product vs others?:
What I really like about this wrap is that it can provide both cold and hot therapy. It is adjustable and one size fits all. It can be adjusted with the velcro to have the snug fit as you like. I also like that it’s not just for your back. I have used it on my shoulders as well. The material is not scratchy or itchy. I have used it directly on my skin without any issues. It’s not very heavy and I find it comfortable to use for a long period of time.
The gel packs are easy to prepare. I mainly use cold therapy and so, I keep them in the freezer until I need to use them, which is usually after workouts or playing soccer. They stay cold for a long period of time and since you get 2, you get more than enough time for relief. I have also tried microwaving them for hot therapy but I prefer cold as it helps me recover quicker and better for my use case.
