WHY BUY MY OWN CAPSULES?
There are many reasons why you may want to fill your own capsules. Supplements purchased in bulk powder can save a small fortune over pre-packaged capsules. You can also mix your own supplements to a formula you cannot buy. I use these to mix four different ingredients aimed at improving concentration…there is no pre-packaged capsule for this, so I would otherwise have to take 4 different pills. With affordable capsule-making machines such as The Capsule Machine, the process is very easy and a small time expenditure can save quite a lot of money.
NOW FOODS OFFERS BOTH GELATIN AND VEGAN CAPSULES…AND BOTH ARE GREAT!
These particular capsules are gelatin-sourced meaning they DO use animal products here. Now Foods also makes vegan capsules in this and other sizes. I have also used the vegan capsules and their quality is just as good as these. This is nice as it gives consumers a choice…usually, the vegan capsules are pricier, but sometimes the opposite is true since prices change all the time. So if you don’t have a preference for one type vs the other, it is worth checking the listing of both and regular and vegan capsules to see which is cheapest.
SIZE & VOLUME
These capsules are “00” size, and I consider that to be a medium-large size for a capsule. Because the density of different supplements vary a lot, estimating how much product each capsule can hold is difficult. I would guesstimate that it can range at least from 300 mg to 1,000+ mg of material. I really tend to like this 00 size because it is big enough that you can fit quite a lot in it (potentially avoiding the need to take multiple smaller capsules), but it is not so large that it is difficult to swallow.
SO HOW ARE THEY? — WHAT I LIKE
If I had to pick a single word to describe the Now Foods capsules (both regular and vegan), it would be ‘consistent’. When you buy hundreds of capsules, consistency is what you want. You want capsules that have a consistent weight, consistent dimensions, consistently tight fitment, and consistent quality without deformed capsules. Now Foods delivers in these areas, where as some other capsules I have used have not. Of special importance here is weight consistency, which these have.
The packaging uses a thick-walled bag, and the capsules are clearly packaged in a room where the environmental controls were optimal for product quality because these do not stick to each other, there are no variations in size, and there are no deformities. This also indicates Now Foods has an excellent system of quality control.
These DO work with automatic/automated capsule filling devices and these work GREAT with The Capsule Machine (another great product.) Do note that like any other capsules, you want to store them in a tightly sealed container and avoid environments that are extremely hot, cold, or humid.
CONCLUSION
Overall, the product consistency is what makes these capsules better than most others. The price isn’t unreasonable at all, and you are getting a product of better quality that is going to be easier to work with. So I highly recommend Now Foods capsules.

I had a problem with my dog taking Tramadol for arthritis pain. Although considered safer (and much cheaper) than some other pet pain relievers, it is a bitter pill to swallow, literally. Once my dog got the taste of it even wrapped in something tasty, out it comes. I purchased a “pill popper”, but it’s a battle to open my dog’s mouth and much too stressful for my old girl.
I read a review of this medicine posted by an RN. She suggested that empty double 00 gelatin capsules be purchased to remedy the problem. Just break up the small tablets, then put them in the empty capsule. Just push and they lock together. That is a plus to keep them tightly together. These work perfect for me. 3 halves fit just right in one capsule and coincidentally that is the prescribed dosage for my dog. Of course you still have to do something make it a treat. If your dog likes peanut butter that’s a plus, but mine doesn’t. I wrap a piece of chicken with a little piece of bread to stick the capsule into. Of course you can use other stuff or go on line and get a homemade pill pocket recipe. I refuse to buy those outrageously high priced store pill pockets.

We take turmeric supplements for specific medical issues. After watching the price skyrocket as everyone got on the turmeric bandwagon, someone told me how cheap it was to make my own. So I bought these capsules and a huge bulk bag of organic turmeric. Without an expensive pill filler, there is no easy or clean way to fill these, but with a little patience and prep, it is doable. Personally, I put on rubber gloves to avoid the turmeric stains all over my hands, and I also wear an apron or an old T-shirt. I keep the turmeric in a square Rubbermaid container that has a large surface area that allows me to push one end of the capsule through the turmeric like a scoop, until it has been filled. Then I cap it with the other end, tap off the excess back into the turmeric container, and put the filled capsule into a recycled dark supplement bottle. Try listening to a good podcast to make the time go faster – or think about all the money you are saving by making your own turmeric supplements!

These are what they are! Veggie caps and cheap price..but now I know why! lol. PRE-WARNING: If you are filling them with a “hot” essential oil, like DoTerra’s Oregano oil, make sure you only swallow it with a form of milk/almond, etc, or cold water and then immediately eat something soft and cooled. Nothing warm, because these are the only gel capsules I have ever had this issue with. They will melt as they go down your throat/esophagus and burn lol Not fun. First time, I was having soup, that was just warm and didnt even think of it. The other time, I let it sit in my mouth too long as I was going to grab something to drink..ya, it was coming up for 20 minutes after like a heartburn. These make their way down super slow, cuz since they start to melt immediately in your mouth, so pop and chug fast! Because of them melting so quickly, takes longer to get to your stomach..stopping along the way. Hope that helps!
