I never had acne as a preteen or even teenager reaching my later 20s early 30s hormonal acne set in deep for me. I literally have tried everything from benzoyl peroxide wash to doxycycline, spirlactone(which regulates hormones)even charcoal face wash and moisturizer. When I tell you nothing was working I got discouraged more often than you could even imagine. However I never and I’m going to emphasize never because a lot of people state they don’t write reviews. But I honestly have never written a review on any product my whole life and this worked miracles for me. I did not want to get back on birth control due to trying to conceive. The pictures above do me no justice and it’s just two weeks of being on this medication, the top two pictures are from when I started the medication and the bottom-left is two weeks from that. It is a must, it may not work for everybody but I will say it has worked for me so far I will continue to buy.

This is zinc gluconate, not the most bio-available form of the mineral. That is Nutrient Carriers Advanced Research Zinc Orotate – 60 mg – 200 Tablets, which is very reasonably priced. The NOW Foods Zinc Picolinate, 120 Capsules / 50mg, Nutricology Zinc Citrate 50 Mg, Vegicaps, 60-Count, and gluconate forms (this product) were found to have more-or-less identical bioavailability in this paper: “Comparative absorption of zinc picolinate, zinc citrate and zinc gluconate in humans,” by: Barrie SA, Wright JV, Pizzorno JE, Kutter E, Barron PC in: Agents Actions. 1987 Jun;21(1-2):223-8.
However, there is another reason to opt for this form of zinc: it contains the lowest amount of cadmium, another mineral very similar physically, thus chemically, to zinc. In nature, they are often found together. However, cadmium is such bad news for one’s kidneys that zinc gluconate remains my choice.
I take one of these every day in flu season, as I am elderly, and every third day outside it. The tab provides 200% of the Daily Value of zinc, and my calcium, magnesium, and zinc tabs provide another 100%. That means that, on average, I am taking about 10 mg of zinc gluconate/day, and another 15 mg of zinc sulfonate. 40 mg/day is the safe upper limit.
Web MD’s page on zinc says that it should not be taken by those suffering from AIDS, as it may shorten their lives. The page did not elaborate on or reference this warning.

I tend to get a lot of viral infections and often turn to zinc to speed up the healing process. When looking into pricey OTC remedies that purport to speed up the healing for cold and flu viruses, I discovered the active ingredient is zinc. A doctor once shot me a wry smile when I noted that the public has been oversold on the idea of vitamin C and Airborne rather than zinc.
It does help speed things up a bit and it also works as a good preventative if taken daily. Annual flu shots don’t protect against everything. When there’s a vacation or other event during cold and flu season that I really can’t miss, I make sure to take a zinc supplement every day. My local supermarket stopped carrying it unfortunately; they made a mean generic version of 100 pills, 30mg each for about the same price. So this is comparable. The pills are also smaller and not chalky. I’m not sure what people are referring to when they state these are difficult to swallow.
These don’t smell or have any taste. There is no vitamin aftertaste either! Still, because it can cause nausea and stomach upset like all vitamins, it should be taken with a meal. I also take the bottle in to my physician so they can note the usage in my chart, discuss interactions, and tell me the maximum daily amount that should be taken. It’s possible to overdose on supplements/vitamins so no one should take a bunch of this hoping to feel better if they’re sick. By overdose, I mean for example that too much calcium can cause unsightly white spots on your teeth. I trust Nature Made products and will definitely buy this again.

Recently I’ve come into a horrible raging bout of adult acne. I’m talking about the kind of acne that is concentrated around the cheeks and jawline and is cystic, painful and leaves nice red scars when it finally decides to flatten out. I’ve read that this kind of acne is hormonal and it does seem to worsen around my menses. In the last few years I’ve really gone a more natural route and have tried to keep my medications and chemical load to a minimum. Birth control pills in the past have really helped with my acne and given my pretty clear skin, but with my new lifestyle I don’t want to use synthetic hormones to trick my body into having good skin. It’s tempting, but after doing some research (googling) I found that zinc can really help some people with their acne. It was worth a shot, so I ordered some zinc tabs– these 30 mg. tabs to be exact. After the first or second day of taking ONE (some people take up to 100mg a day- which I’ve read can be really bad for you) 30 mg. tablet I saw an immediate improvement in my acne. I still get the smaller acne flares daily, but my cystic acne has pretty much disappeared- I’d say it is 80% better. Not having huge lumps of cystic acne on my cheeks, jawline and neck really makes a difference in my confidence. Now I’m just hoping it is safe to continue taking zinc daily… because when I miss a dose of this I get some cysts reappearing.
