I wanted to try my hand at DIY simple skin barrier/protectant using a cocoa butter base. By that I mean something that is 85% or more cocoa butter, without any water component. Majority of cocoa butter products contain a paltry amount of actual cocoa butter. Problem is that cocoa butter is hard at normal room temp. I bought this to “experiment”. First thing I noted was the uniform buttery yellow color. No bits and pieces of chaff, etc that I had seen in other “pure” products. Second was the authentic cocoa aroma. No artificial odorants as far as I can tell. This product has a low melting point temperature, also pointing towards authenticity. To prepare a simple cocoa butter OINTMENT (think barrier skin function) I melted a portion of the hard butter in a small vessel set in hot water (Don’t heat directly on stove. Cocoa butter burns quickly). Then I stirred in small amount of food grade mineral oil (it won’t go rancid like vegetable oil) a few drops at a time, and then allowed the mixture to cool. If it hardened too much, I re-melted and added a bit more oil, and re-cooled. I repeated this until I got the consistency I prefer to apply as a hand protectant. This works really well.
If you want to make a cocoa butter based lotion or cream, you can use this as starter, and then find recipes online for either water-in-oil emulsions (w/o) or oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions. Each has their own respective utility and pros and cons.

It smells wonderful. You can tell there’s nothing else mixed in it. It melts easily and mixes great with my other oils. Easy to get out of the container.
