I’m an ophthalmologist. Lutein and zeaxanthin are pigments found in the central retina (the macula). It has been speculated that a dietary supplement might help prevent development or progression of age-related macular degeneration, but this has not been definitively proven. Manufacturers have come out with all sorts of eye health supplements with a wide variety of ingredients. This is one of the more sensible ones. I do take a lutein/zeaxanthin supplement because my eyesight is important to me, it’s not overly expensive, not harmful, and I admit that I’m hedging my bets because medical information does sometimes change. In the past, I’ve purchased a lutein/zeaxanthin supplement at a well-known national big box store. So what about this product? These are small, easy to swallow orange capsules that contain 40 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin. My big box store version has 25 mg of lutein and 5 mg of zeaxanthin. Another well-known vision supplement is Ocuvite Preservision AREDS 2, which contains 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin. (If you’ve already guessed that there is no standardized recommendation for lutein or zeaxanthin dosing, you’re absolutely correct.) The expiration date is printed clearly on the bottle – my bottle expires nearly 3 years from receipt. This is distributed by Piping Rock, a major supplier of vitamins and supplements and one that I trust. If you do some comparison shopping, I think you will find that this is one of the lowest priced lutein/zeaxanthin supplements sold on Amazon. Bottom line: if you want to add a vision supplement, this one is a reasonable choice. Just be realistic with your expectations – you are not taking anything that’s 100% proven to benefit your eyesight. And what if you’re someone who already has macular degeneration? In that case, please speak with your eye doctor. You will most likely get a recommendation for Ocuvite PreserVision AREDS 2 or an equivalent brand.

These soft gels contain lutein and zeaxanthin that may aid eye health. They do not contain other elements that may help your vision including Vit C, E and Zinc, but these are readily available in other supplements. Copper is another element that may help your eyesight, but isn’t readily available at brick and mortar drugstores (but can be purchased online). So as an all-in-one pill to preserve eye health these aren’t it, but as a source of lutein and zeaxathin these softgels fit the bill.

The price is good and It seems ok. I will have a definite answer when I go for my next eye appointment. I am used to another brand which I had a subscription with, but it was canceled.
