While the smaller doses can be taken more frequently – they did not provide any pain relief. I take one of these a day (midday) and get 3-6 hours of pain relief, and have no side effects. I have taken more but found it makes my tummy unhappy, so I stick to the suggested dosage.

I have been using this product for several years with great success. It has successfully helped me get over a debilitating illness (IC) and helped my father in law with Chrone’s disease.
However, my husband and I are scientists and this weekend got curious as to where KAL was purchasing their astaxanthin from and further – which country it was manufactured in. And, despite access to university libraries and research journals, prolonged efforts of internet searches… we still no nothing at all.
There are three different methods of astaxanthin extraction from the algal plant it is produced in. Water, hexane and/or acetone and finally carbon dioxide. Water does not result in high enough yields while hexane/acetone is toxic… Carbon dioxide is the preferred method of extraction. There is NO indication of extraction methodology for this product.
The parent company, Nutraceutical Coroporation, also manufactures Sol-Ray and more than 20 other brands. None of which list country of origin or extraction technique. For a product as expensive as this is, I would expect a greater level of transparency in both arenas. The fact that neither are obvious or even available causes one to question the company in general. Trust but verify is very much true in this situation…
I am now switching brands to one with a more open and honest source.

From what I’ve read online and on Dr. Mercola’s website, astaxanthin has properties that help the body rid itself of the chemo drugs. I purchased this product for my mother. She received chemo and radiation treatments for 6 months…thank God, she is now cancer free. This is a nutrient that was promoted so highly by NaturalNews.com and Dr. Mercola, but I have yet to see the remarkable results I was led to expect. My health has been so consistently good that it’s hard to tell if this supplement or some combination of the others are keeping me functioning at peak performance. I’ll be 64 in three weeks, so I was very interested to see if it would make a noticeable improvement in my wrinkled skin, as one reviewer claimed. After consuming most of 2 bottles, I’m still waiting.
I will need to do some more research to decide if it is worth continuing to buy this one. May try the Hawaiian brand in the 12 Mg dose(specifically recommended by Mike West) next, to see if I get some results I can feel.
No negatives on this product by KAL. Perhaps it is too early to pass judgement.
