I’m a natural redhead. This means I do not tan – almost biologically impossible for me to. Because I am extremely prone to burning, I have lived most of my life smelling like Coppertone or some other sunscreen. I’ve tried just about every kind on the market and have a high opinion of what I like and what I don’t. This one, I am neutral about. For the cost per ounce and the application feel, this isn’t anything to phone home about, but it is nice to toss into a bag for a day at the beach or to use on your face, neck, ears, lips, etc. while out running errands.

No smell. This is a big one. I don’t understand why anyone would add fragrance to anything intended to be applied anywhere near the face, neck, etc. It is skin. I don’t need it to smell like coconuts. And many people with fair skin, who are the more prolific purchasers of sunscreen, also typically have sensitive skin. I’m please this doesn’t appear to have any added essential oils or masking fragrances.

The application is ok. This is a lotion, which for the price point, I would have hoped it would have had a smoother application formulation. It is semi-thick, doesn’t leave a white cast, but does take a little effort to apply. I’m spoiled to watergel sunscreens, which this is not. Most everything I buy sunscreen-wise these days is Korean brands because they apply like a dream (immediately soaking into the skin, no white cast, and are often loaded with beneficial ingredients alongside sun protection). This is just your run of the mill, just ok sunscreen. It does the job of providing protection, but I wouldn’t consider it a luxury sunscreen product.

Size. The bottle is ideal for tossing into my purse/bag. I reapply regularly to my face, neck, ears, and arms (openly exposed areas) when I’m out and about running errands.

It seems to provide SPF protection. I haven’t experienced any pink or obvious reactions to the sun or any sort of sensitivity to the product itself. However, I likely won’t repurchase because there are equally as good sunscreens out there with the same SPF coverage, with a better texture, at a lower price point.

I’ve got somewhat fair skin and am concerned about sun protection because my grandfather had skin cancer. Also, at my age I want to do whatever it takes to take care of myself to stay healthy.

I’m one of those who absolutely dislikes putting creams and such on my face because I don’t like to have a greasy feeling. I’ve tried a very large number of other sunscreens in my lifetime and I’ve never liked them because they dripped, left my skin feeling oily, stung my eyes when I started sweating, and left my hands greasy and stinky too after I applied them.

This Jack Black SPF 45 sunscreen is the complete opposite of what I’ve experienced all of my life. Wow. Didn’t think it was possible to protect your face from the harsh sun while still staying comfortable.

I used it on a two-week trip to sunny, humid, and hot Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I was surprised that I never had this run into my eyes and cause them to sting. I was well protected the whole time. I think I came back just a little more “tan” than before I left, but that’s good I suppose. This sunscreen protected me from burning and turning red, and my skin never got to the point where I started to peel.

I always felt “normal” on my skin in that my skin didn’t smell or feel funny nor slick or greasy because of the product. It immediately absorbed into the skin and stayed there without running.

I tried a little experiment this morning just before I want outside in the hot Arizona heat to work in the yard for a couple of hours:
I first applied Jack Black Double-Duty Moisturizer on my face, and then I immediately lathered on a thick smear of this Jack Black SPF 45 Sunscreen on top of that just to see how things turned out. And to further add to the drama, I purposefully didn’t wash my hands after applying these on my face, ears, back of my neck, etc. Guess what: went on smoothly. Again, no sting in my eyes despite my heavy sweating. And my hands were perfectly dry and not greasy immediately after putting this on. I just rubbed them together for a few seconds and the mildly thick liquid sunscreen just seemingly disappeared into the palms of my hands.

It’s a definite addition to my routine. I’ll be putting this on on top of my daily moisturizer when I plan on being in the sun extensively. A little goes a long way, so it’ll last and is worth the slight premium in price vs. generic/mainstream sunscreens you can buy in the store.

Sunscreens usually irritate my husband eye, so I was trying to find one that doesn’t irritate and fortunately found this . My husband is in love with this sunscreen. It’s doesn’t burn his eye nor leave white flakes in his skin. He is happy so am I . Thank you for this product.

Smells good, spreads easy, cool on the skin, penetrates quickly. Not expensive. Delivers next day.
    5 Stars. Thank you Amazon.

Firstly, I had intended to compare this as an almost like for like with the Australian Gold SPF 30 (made in USA?!?) https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/r.html?C=148LYIXGS6DN9&K=XVVFZDS7FC27&M=urn:rtn:msg:20180730083500e6e32634845b4cfab1c9818aff50p0eu&R=AD45WYF02Y3&T=C&U=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fdp%2FB00CQIRYQM%3Fref_%3Dpe_3187911_248764861_302_E_DDE_dt_1&H=QXSGXGFUDQBMIYRYIN3VXRSO0B0A&ref_=pe_3187911_248764861_302_E_DDE_dt_1, except you can’t use that on your face (seriously, I accidentally put it on first day and it felt like I’d rubbed chillies all over my face after 2 minutes). The difference was clear after one use.
Where to start, my 7 year old and I usually go to the coast of Northern Italy, which involves lots of beach time in and out of the sea, along with not taking any shade with us. Last year after using run of the mill sunscreens, that claim to be for active use, resulted in the worst sunburn I’ve had in 30 odd years.
The sunscreen I would’ve risked trying to get through customs, because at first glance it looks like it could get through, I’d decided to book a hold bag this year any way, because of other things we were taking (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/r.html?C=38VLIQ1P7ES9H&K=XVVFZDS7FC27&M=urn:rtn:msg:20180730011931fb299490193244a69f450b371180p0eu&R=AD45WYF02Y3&T=C&U=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB00L46SOWK%2Fref%3Dpe_3187911_189395841_pd_te_s_wl_ti%2F261-7512067-3605849%3F_encoding%3DUTF8%26pd_rd_i%3DB00L46SOWK%26pd_rd_r%3DYD7MDB9E2FH8H56B8563%26pd_rd_w%3DP6gIK%26pd_rd_wg%3DwlXqn&H=02X0YLPRQA62UYQ8AMZUADPIAGIA&ref_=pe_3187911_189395841_pd_te_s_wl_ti). For two people running around for a week, I’d suggest 2 bottles and split them in to three smaller 80ml, either squeezable or round, containers, due to the thick, creamy consistency.
Application is good first thing, it really sinks into your skin, doesn’t leave any white cast, and if you were just using this on face, arms and legs to wander lasts an incredible amount of time (80 minutes in the sea, 120 minutes on dry land). Second application with any moisture (sea water, perspiration, etc.) is a little harder not to get a touch of white cast, although, not an issue for me (it could work in with more massage or after a towel off). It seems to bond onto the 1st layer, and cover in, which if you’re out in the seas swimming or surfing, you definitely want that coverage. In the water, I could see beading of water on my daughter’s face and my arms, gave me a reassuring sign that we were covered.
These are the aspects the Australian Gold let us down, reapplication and sense of security in the water.
On the parts that I’d used the Jack Black, I got an even light bronze glow by the third day and felt more moisturised, with the gold, it was a much deeper bronze.
Allowing for differences in SPF, one seems designed for sunbathing and lounging with the odd dip, the other for active beach lovers.
The aromas, Aussie is a lovely tropical scent that really smells nice on, Mr Black very neutral, almost imperceptible.
My daughter liked the Aussie, for aroma reasons I’m guessing, and it seems it kept up with her running around.
For sense of security, and all around cover, if buy nothing but this year after year. It truly is a great product with broad spectrum defence against UV. I’d recommend to anyone who works outdoors all year round.

Really does a good job of sun protection.

  7. Amazon Customer

This is the best American sunscreen I have ever used. Very moisturizing and water resistant. Provides great protection. I have since moved on to European and Japanese sunscreens which have newer and better sun filters than US sunscreens. However if I’m ever in a spot that I HAVE to buy an American sunscreen again this will be it.

  8. Fashionista

    Nice it absorbs fast!!!

  9. Richard St.

Super cómodo, no es grasoso ni muy brlloso, pero tampoco reseca. Es hibrido asi que tiene un ligero color blanco sobre la piel. Indetectable para pieles claras o morenas claras.

  10. LMV

Super lightweight and stays on even in very hot humid weather — only catch is it leaves a film and looks like you have foundation on. That may be great if you’re very fair, but may not be if you don’t like the Casper-ghost look. Still, I love it. I know it works!
