  1. Gerald W. Gaston

I started taking the name brand of lutein with zeaxanthin and other supplements (C, sometimes zinc, e) at my eye doctor’s direction many years ago, after my doc’s practice and others (and I think NIH) did trials on the value of these vitamins especially for macular degeneration. Last year I decided to try to take a range of many vitamins for eye health (and eat lots of greens!) Sometimes there isn’t time to take and swallow the full array, so I have tried quite a few lutein or lutein and combo vitamins lately. Preservision is good, but big and hard to swallow and it doesn’t include other vitamins I think are important, so I wanted a source of lutein that I would pair with another more general supplement, limiting myself to just a couple swallows. I ordered these because I hoped they might fit into that streamlined part of my regimen.

Unfortunately, these have an inherent problem in the ingredients, in addition to being huge, I would be better off taking the leading brand, hard as it is to swallow. The ingredient problem with these is that the components are not in the balance found to be helpful in the serious medical study (that is the basis for the name brand.) In addition, the first listed ingredient, other than the vitamin components, is soy oil. There is a growing body of literature that those who are dealing with macular degeneration, which benefits from lutein, should avoid “seed oils” including soy oil. I even asked Bard’s AI if I should look for an alternative without soy oil and found that there are studies that suggest avoiding soy oil is desirable. I then checked quite a few bottles with lutein that I have on hand and concluded that this was a product I would avoid unless I had no other lutein on hand. So I cannot recommend these, unfortunately.

I’ve been hesitant to take this product, I selected this product without fully researching it, but the bottle has a warning about being exposed to “chemicalS including Lead” especially at this point in time as I’m TTC I don’t want to take any risks I don’t have to. The product pic and what I received is different, I posted an example, the actual bottle I received has Soybean oil and 1mg Zeaxanthin but the stock image says Safflower oil and 1600mcg. This whole bottle should last 2 months since you only need to take one capsule a day, but I don’t think I’ll continue using this product I’ll go back to my usual Lutein supplement.

These supplements are a good value when doing a comparison of similar products. From what I read, Lutein with Zeaxanthin are supposed to be good support to keep eyes healthy. My wife and I both take these supplements.

Used to use a more expensive brand. The quality of this preparation seems on par with the former product.

There’s a history of macular degeneration in my family, including my father, so anything I can do to delay or even prevent that is really important to me. Some research suggests lutein is helpful in this regard, so I’ve been taking it for many years. It’s one of those supplements that may or may not be effective, but it isn’t that costly, and lutein is extracted from plants like kale and marigold petals, so it’s unlikely to be harmful.

I like this Herbal Secrets version. It’s the same price as one I’ve been taking, but at twice the amount of lutein per day (40 mg instead of 20). So I’m happy with it and will probably stick with this version.

It doesn’t appear to be made in the USA; I’m guessing China. When a package doesn’t say where it’s made, but weasels its way around it by saying it’s “manufactured for and distributed by” a U.S. company, that’s pretty clear evidence it wasn’t made in the USA. Nonetheless, that’s true of many supplements, so what can we do? I’m rolling the dice and taking this.

Full Disclosure: I received this product at no charge through Amazon’s Vine program in return for writing an honest, accurate product review. Amazon’s only requirement is that I review the products I order, not that I praise them. I don’t pull my punches; if a product is bad, I say so, and if I love it, I say that. I have an obligation to tell you, the shopper, what I think so you can make informed purchases. I also believe sellers/manufacturers need to know if their product deserves 5 stars, or if they missed the mark, how they need to improve it.

Notice: I’m not a doctor or dietician – please consult your doctor if you have questions or concerns about this supplement.

This is 60 soft capsules with 40mg and 1mg of Zeaxanthin per soft capsule. They are larger than even my fish oil supplements but they go down easy. No issues for me swallowing these. Not sure how much they help with eye health but I have no digestive distress with these, so I will continue to take them.

This should last 60 days if you take one a day. I take them along with my fish oil and other oil-based supplements.
