Shiitake mushrooms are a rich source of l-ergothioneine, a very interesting and promising chemical that some scientists believe is essential for humans. The human body has an ergothioneine transporter to move it into our cells, yet our bodies don’t produce it. So, this may mean it is essential.

Shiitake mushrooms are a very rich source of ergothioneine, and thus can give some of the potential benefits associated with it. Lion’s mane and oyster mushrooms are also particularly high.

This supplement contains 250 mg of shiitake mushroom extract per serving.

I am not a big fan of how Carlyle (and their sister company Horbaach) labels their supplements. They often label them using multiple pills as a “serving,” and also list the amount on the label based on the equivalent weight if the product didn’t contain extract. So, since you have 500 mg of a 4:1 extract per 2 pills, this means 2 pills are equivalent to 2000 mg of actual shiitake mushrooms.

At any rate, they are a quality supplement company and they test their products, so it is a good product despite the labeling.

They look like any other mushroom pill, hopefully the benefit is there.

The quality is what one would expect and hope for in a product used for health support.

Mushroom extracts are a very trendy thing now–if you’ve perused a well stocked vitamin display or health food store lately you already now this. I’m not exactly sure why they’re everywhere now. They’re not new–in fact, they’ve been used by traditional Eastern Asian healers for centuries. The ‘big name’ among mushroom supplements is likely Lion’s Mane mushrooms. They’re indicated to have some cognitive benefits (eg: growth of brain cells, focus, memory) and no real side effects. I’ve been taking the Lion’s Mane supplements for almost a year now. I can’t validate their positive impact but I do feel better when I’m taking them than when I’m not.

This supplement is arguably the best known of all mushroom varieties (with the possible exception of portabella). Shiitake mushrooms are ubiquitous in Asian cooking and particularly in soups. They’re also popular as a supplement as well. Shiitakes are reputed to have a number of health benefits–they have antioxidant properties, boost immunity and support heart health among other things.

I’ve recently started taking these shiitake supplements and so far so good. Two capsules a day–they’re easy to swallow and don’t cause any issues for me if I take them on an empty stomach. I’ve been using Carlyle supplements for quite some time–I like them because they’re always high quality and don’t have problematic additives. Recommended!

I’ve read about the many potential health benefits of a variety of mushrooms. One of them was anti-inflammatory properties. I’m not new to taking herbal supplements, vitamins and minerals, so I’m well aware that the brand matters. This is a great quality brand of shiitake mushroom supplements.

I gave these to my mom to try to help manage her chronic inflammation and bone and muscle pain. Over the course of taking them, she’s felt a reduction in pain and feels more energized overall. She hasn’t encountered any negative side effects either. It’s been great! While this certainly isn’t a miracle cure, it can be a healthy addition to your diet and routine. Highly recommend trying!

Right, lets get this out of the way – I really don’t like mushrooms. Don’t like the taste, hate the smell of cooked mushrooms and ain’t much of a fan of the texture either. Now, I know there are many more varieties of mushroom than I have or will ever try, but like a stubborn child, I have decided I just don’t like them and I won’t eat them.

So whenever I hear or read about the supposed many health benefits of including mushrooms in your diet, I just generally sigh and accept that it’s not gonna be happening for me. Accordingly, the idea that mushroom extract capsules can convey at least some of the benefits of eating mushrooms was quite appealing to me. Carlyle is a brand I am familiar with as a supplier of quality nutritional supplements, so it made sense to try this Shiitake Mushroom extract.

The capsules themselves are a good size (about 5/8ths of an inch) that I find easy to swallow. Importantly, they don’t taste like mushrooms (well, they might, but they don’t touch my taste buds long enough to find out). The bottle contains 200 capsules which will probably last me about 4-5 months as I don’t take all of my supplements every day. I had read that mushroom extracts can cause some stomach discomfort if taken at higher doses over a period of time. These capsules at effectively 2000mcg should be below that threshold, although I guess there are always some individuals who are more sensitive to digestive/intestinal issues, so use with caution if you know you have a more sensitive stomach. I can say that I have been taking these for over a week with no adverse effects.

I like the idea that I am accruing some of the benefits that I am missing from not eating mushrooms so I will continue to take these, whilst looking out for emerging research that supports or disproves the health benefits that these supplements offer. In the meantime, if you’re gonna do it, choosing a reputable brand is a good place to start.

I notice it more when I don’t have shiitake than when I do. I just feel better when I get a dose of the mushroom.
