I’m a 54-yo woman and started taking iodine because I assumed I was deficient for a few reasons. Anyway, I should have done blood work before using the product to determine whether I needed it. This review is about my experience with this product and, presumably, iodine supplementation in general, and I’ve no reason to believe this particular product is deficient in any way. My anecdotal evidence led me to believe the iodine caused these strange symptoms and I hope it helps someone else who may be searching for answers regarding these symptoms (timeline below symptoms):
— The roof of my mouth became deeply “ridged”-feeling, and textured. It was scary to me and caused me to wonder if I was getting a mouth disease.
— I also began to get dried sores at the corners of my mouth, and a numb or chapped feeling creeping outward all around my mouth. You could visibly see the cracked/chapped corners of my mouth, but the feeling outside my lips was not visible. It did, however, feel very chapped and led me to use lip balm all around my mouth many times a day. I could also feel the “chapped” or rough feeling with my finger, even though it wasn’t visible. It was very strange.
— A good side effect was I seemed to be invisible (or distasteful) to mosquitoes. I am normally a magnet for them and noticed they didn’t bother me for the weeks leading up to these other side effects, despite standing/walking outside at night for several nights in the grass for 30-45 minutes and seeing mosquitoes flying near me. (But they resumed attacking me within a day or two of ceasing the iodine supplement.)
Timeline:
2/14/19: First-time order: a 30-day supply. I used the whole bottle by late March. I hadn’t noticed any adverse effect.
5/7/19: Resumed taking the iodine (after ordering 90-day supply on May 5).
5/20-21/19: The roof of my mouth began feeling ridged and numb (although I didn’t document it until 5/24).
5/23/19: I started to notice a rash at the corners of my mouth (again, documented the next day).
5/24/19: The rashy-numb feeling at the corners of my mouth began to creep outward all around my mouth and lips. This is the day that I finally documented what I had approximated to have begun four days prior. By this day, the roof of my mouth felt heavily and deeply ridged. I couldn’t see very well what it looked like because it’s hard to see the roof of one’s mouth. And since I don’t normally look at the roof of my mouth, didn’t have a comparison to what “normal” would look like.
5/24/19: Stop taking iodine.
5/25/19: Roof of mouth seems better. Mosquitoes are noticing me again.
5/26/19: Roof of mouth seems 98% back to normal. Rash at corners of mouth has not progressed and may be healing. Still feel the need to use lip balm for the odd feeling of chapped lips. Am an open buffet for mosquitoes, even with repellant.
5/29/19 (today): Roof of mouth feels normal. Lips and corners of mouth feel 99.5% back to normal. May still feel a hint of numbness.
It seemed the symptoms were caused by the iodine. But I don’t understand why the symptoms appeared so strongly in only 13 days in May, when I had taken it for 30 days in Feb-March, with no noticeable effect. I searched the internet for symptoms of iodine excess and did find mention of symptoms close to mine although not exact: things like sore throat, painful mouth, and face rash.
I hesitate to mention this other thing being a causal factor because the dates don’t add up, but I began taking glucosamine with hyaluronic acid on 5/22/19 (Amazon says it was delivered on that day). I reported on the 24th that my symptoms began four days prior. Even if my memory was wrong and my symptoms had begun two days prior, then the effect between the two supplements would had to have been immediate, which seems unlikely. I’ve never before taken the glucosamine with HA until 5/22. I was taking glucosamine with the iodine in February, but it was plain glucosamine, without the HA.
There’s my experience, in case it can help someone else. Perhaps I’ll get labs done to get a better idea of what’s going on. I wonder if I pumped up an iodine deficiency in February and simply didn’t need any more, and that’s why I got symptoms the second time and not the first. I’ll update my review if I learn anything else.

I’ve been using these for awhile, I typically order them directly through the Mercola Website but getting them on Amazon is so much easier.
They are small and flavorless so super easy to take.

High quality. Worked well. I read online that high doses of iodine are needed in the ovary for proper functioning and that a deficiency causes excess estrogen which then causes heavy periods and fibroids. This period was unusually light for me! The iodine worked! Haha! I just need to find a cheaper source because I’m unemployed. The bottle is made of glass not plastic so be mindful and the iodine is liquid in a capsule. And the dose I took was 4 capsules a day.
