I ordered this Dr. Mercola Betaine HCL and Pepsin Dietary Supplement for my wife’s use. It seems like you always hear about people having excess stomach acid, but my wife is just the opposite – she actually has LOW stomach acid. That may sound like a good thing, but in fact it carries its own set of issues, such as the inability to properly digest food and get all the nutrients from it that you should.
She’s been taking this supplement (but from a different brand) for a number of years and it’s been helping her tremendously. The only thing is that the prior brand had its Pepsin derived from porcine sources. However, studies have shown that Pepsin derived from fungal protease is more effective, so now she’s switched to Dr. Mercola’s formulation, which has its Pepsin derived from Aspergillus Niger. Besides providing the digestive enzymes that she needs to compensate for her low stomach acid, this supplement also supports liver functions and helps with detoxification.
The label recommends taking 3 capsules with meals (one capsule per meal), but she’s been taking just one capsule a day with one of her meals and still can feel the benefits that this supplement provides. Excellent product!

This supplement is beneficial to take before a meal to help in absorption of nutrients. In the long run, this can help to make your liver healthier, and possibly also lose weight. You can also get the benefits from eating beets or shrimp. This supplement prevents pathogens from entering the stomach. It increases the acid in your stomach. It lowers your stomach PH. A higher level of acid in your stomach improves absorption of trace minerals and protein. As you age, you have a lower acidity in your stomach, so you start needing a supplement to help you with that. This supplement is not extremely acidic, but it helps your body create more acid. If you have been taking antibiotics for a recent infection, or if you take antacids, you need Betaine HCL to help re-build the acids in your stomach. Otherwise, you will just become more and more dependent on medications.
Recommended dosage of this supplement is one capsule per day. At 90 capsules, it should last 3 months.
The capsules are very easy to swallow.

I have always liked Dr. Mercola’s supplements, so I recently ordered this Betaine HCL and Pepsin product. It provides 650 mg of Betaine HCL, derived from beets, and 50 mg of Fungal Pepsin, from Aspergillus niger, which is often found in probiotic supplements. Betaine HCL is widely used as a digestive aid to boost stomach acid naturally. It is also used to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), as both may occur when there’s not enough stomach acid to keep gut bacteria under control. It is fast-acting and works for just a short time (about an hour), so it should be taken just before a meal that contains protein. It should never be taken on an empty stomach.
This bottle contains 90 capsules. The product description states “30 servings (90 capsules),” but per the label, one capsule should be taken three times a day with meals. That’s 90 servings, and if taken 3 times a day, the bottle is a 30-day supply. The ingredients are of good quality, and the dose recommendation is in line with current research. But determining the right dose can vary from one person to the next and may require some trial and error. Too little will be ineffective; too much will cause discomfort from excess stomach acid. This product is non-GMO, soy-free, and gluten-free. While on the pricey side, I feel that the quality of this product is worth a few dollars more, and it’s a good choice to consider for those who are shopping for Betaine HCL with pepsin.

I ordered this because I read something that suggested that some cases of acid reflux/GERD are caused by having too LITTLE stomach acid to trigger the stomach inlet to close off the esophagus correctly. I figured it was worth a try, since several years of Pepcid and Zantac hadn’t done anything to help it. Yeah, turns out the traditional reflux meds were just treating the end-result symptom and making my digestion less able to break down my food, which exacerbated my existing problems absorbing B12 and iron and calcium. This is the second-most-important supplement in my arsenal now, right behind magnesium; they’ve been nearly miraculous in getting back to a less-unhealthy state than I’ve been in for a decade.
These capsules, like most, don’t have any real smell or taste, but they work quite well. There were a few days of increased stomach upset until my body got used to the idea, but my GERD has all but disappeared in the month I’ve been taking these. And I’m having fewer bouts of IBS as well, which is another major win in my book.
However, these are fairly expensive for my budget, so I may not be able to swing this brand consistently, no matter how much better the Dr. Mercola formulation is supposed to be. Now that I know that Betaine HCl works for me, I’ll likely try some from other manufacturers until I find one that’s affordable with my income and still effective at keeping my GERD gone and improving my digestion.
