Cinnamom –
I am not a big believer in supplements or even vitamin regimens. Mostly it feels like very little return for high investment. HOWEVER — Sam-e is the exception. I noticed a significant difference within an hour of taking this and I absolutely will not go without it. It lowers my joint pain level as well as ibuprofen AND helps considerably with alertness and mood. If I forget to take it, by noon my joint pain will remind me. I have clinically diagnosed ADHD, but due to blood pressure issues after pregnancy, I cannot take prescription stimulants. This stuff really does the trick. You do have to work to find your optimal dosage — I took 400 mg the second day and didn’t sleep for about 20 hours. The 200mg dose is my sweet spot. I have taken 400mg when on long driving trips to help with alertness, and it’s worked very well. The best part is that it’s out of your system in a day, so if you don’t like the way it makes you feel, it’s quickly gone.
Ravenhill –
A thorough blood test during the Obama years revealed I was a little low in SAM-e, so I decided to begin taking it as a supplement.
I could really tell a difference in my energy levels (higher on it) and mood (better). I recommend people try it along with B vitamins if they have low energy and moods they can’t understand, along with consulting their physicians (rather than self-medicating with things like alcohol or nicotine, for example, or just sitting around in the dark eating sugar, which doesn’t really work out.)
Frankly, I don’t care about things being vegan or gluten-free (why should there be wheat in this?) but this brand is a good value.
SAM-e will always be in blister pacs because apparently it reacts with the oxygen in the air and goes bad otherwise. A few orders, one or two tablets have been damaged in shipping and gone bad (dark brown) this way.

This stuff can work great, but keep in mind everyone is different and not everyone should be taking SAMe. It was so strong for me that I was only taking 50mg a day. I had to use a pill cutter and tightly wrap each piece in plastic wrap and use the 4 pieces within 4 days otherwise it broke down too fast. It gets glossy looking or gooey when bad. One thing people don’t understand about SAMe is that it will increase your estrogen or play on your estrogen receptors. I think that is part of the reason it can work on depression, because increased estrogen also increases your brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine. But here’s the tricky part: It only increases your estrogen by increasing your methylation process. I am so sensitive that I can tell small changes that happen to my body. I have had a hysterectomy and am on hormone pellets estradiol and testosterone. In the beginning of my pellets they come on strong and SAMe causes “too much” of the already too much hormones. At the end of the 3 month pellet dosing I am feeling low in hormones and the SAMe can sometimes help get me through by increasing my estrogens. The only thing is that flip flopping your neurotransmitters around by stopping and starting can be more of a shock than it’s worth. I have felt euforia and I have felt anxiety and paranoia while on SAMe. I am one of those people who have tons of homozygous methylation dna problems and the bad COMT estrogen metabolism snp’s. Just be careful and pay attention to how you are feeling. If your boobs swell up and you get anxiety while on it, that probably means you are overmethylating and getting too much estrogen in an already estrogen dominant body. Maybe you need Methyl folate and Methyl B12 and progesterone instead.

SAMe was a recommended supplement in Dr. Daniel Amen’s book, “Making a Good Brain Great”. There is a section in the brain, called the Deep Limbic System (DLS) and when it is not functioning right (excessive activity in this part of the brain), these problems can occur: depression, sadness, focusing on the negative, irritability, low motivation and energy, negativity, social disconnection/isolation, low self-esteem, crying spells, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness. I was experiencing all of these. Some days I would be fine and other days I felt like I was losing my mind. I had absolutely nothing to be depressed/sad about and the littlest things would bother me and/or make me upset. I was also very irritable. It was getting out of control and it was really affecting my life and my relationship with my boyfriend. I am not too keen on taking any type of pill, which is why I avoided going to see a doctor. I knew he/she would only prescribe me anti-depressants of some sort, which are not only expensive, but also have many negative side effects. This is when I decided to give SAMe a try – and it has changed my life like I never thought possible. It improved my mood and my motivation. I am not nearly as negative and irritable as I was before and I feel really good about my life and in general. For the women out there, I also noticed an improvement in my PMS symptoms.
A few things to take note of:
-Check with your doctor first before taking. I didn’t, but you really should.
-Start off with a lower dose. I first started with 400mg and after a few days I started getting anxiety and also a headache shortly after taking. The better dose for me is 200mg, but everyone is different.
-Take a vitamin B supplement with SAMe. More specifically, B12, B6 and Folate. This helps with absorbency.
-DO NOT take if you have bipolar disorder or are taking other anti-depressants.
SAMe is best taken on an empty stomach. Wait 30 minutes or so before eating. I take mine in the morning, along with a vitamin B complex and it has worked out very well. Also be sure to give it time to work. I saw the most improvement after 2 weeks of daily usage.
