From the time I brought him home at age 12 weeks, my Shiba Inu has ALWAYS scratched. I’ve watched his diet, changed his shampoo, etc. and he still constantly scratched. We had several bouts of him scratching and biting himself so much that he had bald patches on his tail, legs, back and sides and each time, the vet put him on steroids and he was SO miserable.
Finally, after a big flare-up a year ago, the vet decided to test him for allergies ($200) and turns out that there are a number of environmental allergens he is reacting to. So, we started the allergy shots – the vet said that IF it worked, it would take 4-6 months to see significant improvement. We got through the first vial ($160) and didn’t see much improvement. The second vial might have been defective since he started itching and scratching even more so dumped that and ordered a third vial – got through that vial but by that time, he was again having bald patches on his side from scratching himself so hard and the vet had to give him a steroid shot!
At that point, the vet advised that he see a dermatologist – however, he can’t have any medication in the six weeks prior to seeing the dermatologist in the middle of December so the vet said to try this – actually, he had heard about this product but my dog was his first patient to try it.
So far, so good – the first time I used it, after two days, I noticed that he didn’t scratch at all but after his bath (the vet wants him to have a bath once a week), he started scratching again. The second application didn’t seem to have as much effect but now that he’s had the fourth application, the scratching is much reduced. Another plus is that these drops make him smell WONDERFUL –
I was going to order another box from the vet but found them on-line (at Entirely Pets) and bought enough for a year (after the first two months of once-weekly treatments, you can then move to every other week application, per the product flyer) – the box at the vet would have cost +$10 more per box than getting them on-line and since this is not considered medication, my pet insurance plan does not cover it.
So, if you have tried everything (even my vet conceded defeat) for your itchy/allergic dog, consider trying this – my vet said the skin of dogs with allergies is not as effective a barrier to allergens so while my dog has a daily fatty acid tablet, he said the skin application is much more effective.
