As a teen, I suffered from acne pretty severely. In addition, I had to also tolerate skin that was so sensitive! OTC products either made my skin even more oily, or killed the acne but my skin along with it! Very sensitive, combination skin is a very frustrating challenge for any teen that is just coming into his/her own. Part of looking forward to growing up is less stress, resulting in fewer breakouts. Most people just outgrow that stage anyway. Somehow, after I turned 36, I started breaking out, again. I blamed it on addition stress in my life, but it didn’t solve the problem! I thought to myself: “I did my time” when looking back at those years feeling insignificant due to constant acne. Now, I stare at that 16 year old, again in my mid 30’s? Oh, h*ll no!! … ALL the same results. Oily skin, extra oily. Too strong? Kill acne, overnight more surface on dry, sensitive, combination skin! I found this stuff literally by accident. I could have reversed the charges, cancel the order. Then, I thought about a recent article about “Active Charcoal” and its benefits. I thought to myself “What do I have to lose?” It came in the mail, it’s black when it comes out of the tube (charcoal is black, hello!), slightly grainy, but I massaged it on. The next morning, I looked in the mirror, and surprise!! A youthful, soft, acne-free face stared back! No dry skin, no residue, just…..beautiful me! I have been using this face wash everyday for 5 years and love it!! It’s the best, leaves my face feeling so clean and moisturized. I barely ever get zits anymore! Will definitely keep buying!

I was introduced to this line after I wasIn a car accident which left a scar from the corner of my mouth all the way to my ear. One of my first times in public after the stiches were removed was to a party where a girl pulled me aside (I think she actually thought she was going to save me from the scar) and gave me two samples she had just received from her dermatologist the day before. One product was a different form of maderma, and the other product was by derma e. It was a scar lightening cream and I loved it. I haven’t been able to locate it for the past few years but all other products by derma e have never failed to impress me.
I purchased this daily exfoliating scrub thinking it was a daily exfoliating cleanser. The directions on the bottle say to apply to clean skin. So if (like me) you’re shopping for cleanser and get distracted by this product, it is great (I love this line), but it’s clearly not a cleanser. It exfoliates nicely. Leaves my skin feeling soft, clean and ready for serums, treatments or moisturizer.

Not too coarse not too fine. Gets your blood circulating. Overall does a good job. I am not to keen on the smell but I guess that is due to the charcoal. Using Kneipp Almond Blossom facial cream afterwards and good is.

I have very dry skin that is prone to lots of cell buildup. I usually prefer to use the oil cleaning method, but that’s not very conducive to heavy exfoliation concurrent with cleaning the skin with oil. Enter Derma-e’s detox scrub. The apricot kernel powder does a fine job of gentle exfoliation (rather than the outright scrubbing I was doing). The minty-ness is refreshing for my overheated skin after being outdoors most of the day. The cleanser is full of moisturizing oils that are left on/in the skin after rinsing the cleanser off and as a result my skin feels so good. I deducted a star because while Derma-e gets overall good ratings from the EWG skin deep guide (a 2 last I checked), there are a couple of ingredients in this specific product of theirs that have mediocre ratings at a level 4 concern. That’s still better than most facial cleansers on the market today, and since I only use this cleanser maybe twice per week, I’ll keep using it unless I find a cleanser with a lower EWG rating that works for my dry, scaly skin.

I’ve used a lot of this company’s products and they’ve all been great, scoring highly on the EWG’s database. I ran out of a scrub that had been discontinued (or impossible to find) and made the switch to this one with high expectations. I skimmed the ingredients, they look good.
NOBODY MENTIONED THAT IT FEELS LIKE VICKS VAPO-RUB ON YOUR FACE and continues to burn for 30 minutes after use. I feel like that should be front and center on the label. Also, I don’t have particularly sensitive skin or an aversion to mint – I rub pure peppermint essential oil on my temples and neck for headaches, and pure eucalyptus oil on my chest for cough/congestion with no problem.
But this stuff sure wakes you up in the morning. It’s also much less “scrubby” than the last facial scrub I used. It does have grit, but fewer particles per dab if that makes sense.
Above all, I think the menthol isn’t actually helping the skin or complexion in any way and it really is uncomfortable to use. I’ll keep looking – I’d skip this unless you love the feeling of minty-toothpaste burn all over your face.
