Okay, I played Metal Gear Solid 3 and I didn’t realise that Calorie Mate was a real product.
So I ordered a case on a whim.
This stuff is seriously tasty, and very filling. It was a bit of a pain nailing down which flavour was which color, but omg. As a Canadian I was not impressed with the Maple flavour, but it was still good’ish. Cheese was very good, Chocolate is awesome, and fruit/nut pairs nicely with tea.
Seriously consider getting these. Well worth the price and shipping time.

They arrived much quicker than I expected them to. And I enjoyed each one greatly. But for the price I have to take off a star, way to expensive. Unless you’re a big fan of them (I had gotten them from seeing them in Metal Gear Solid 3).

Yes, I first learned about these from Metal Gear years ago.
I was recently searching for Pocari Sweat and CalorieMate came up as a suggestion in the related items. Instantly recognizing the packaging from MGS, I decided to give it a shot partially for nostalgia but also to find out whether they are actually good enough to keep on hand for days when I am too busy to get a full meal or traveling.
These come 4 bars in each box, wrapped in pairs of 2 (meaning each box has 2 wrappers in it with 2 bars each, so you can open and eat 2 and save the other 2 sealed for later). The texture across all 4 flavors is about the same. It reminds me of a shortbread cookie. They are somewhat dry and crumbly, but not chalky or hard to swallow in my opinion. They are a nice size, each bar being about 2 or 3 bites for me. I like that they are packaged in pairs as I can open and eat 1 or 2 and save the rest for later, or if I am still hungry just eat all 4. I am not big in to monitoring my macros or anything, but I did glance over the nutritional facts and these seem like an ok option for the occasional convenience snack to keep in my bag or at the desk when I am in need of a snack to keep me going. This is not a high protein food or anything, but if you care about those details you’ve probably already done your research before reading this review.
The chocolate flavor is nice, it is not sweet. Just a nice light cocao flavor. Probably the easiest and most approachable flavor of the bunch. I will probably order more of this flavor in the future to keep on hand. My 3 year old daughter enjoyed this flavor as well.
The maple is interesting. It is sweeter than the chocolate, but still not sugary sweet by any means. There is a nice citrus flavor that I get in these that pairs well with the maple. Second favorite flavor of the 4 and one I would consider getting again if I wanted to change things up from the chocolate.
The fruit flavor is interesting. Not my favorite, but not bad. I don’t really know how to describe the flavor, it just tastes kind of citrusy to me. I did not dislike this flavor, but I probably won’t be ordering it again.
The cheese is definitely a more acquired taste. It has an interesting cheese flavor, maybe along the lines of a parmesan most prominently, but there is also an off putting subtle sweetness that just doesn’t work for me here. It wasn’t entirely unpalatable, but since I ordered these I have gone through most of the other flavors already and I’m still sitting on 2 and 1/2 boxes of the cheese. I still don’t think they are objectively disgusting, someone out there will probably really like this flavor, I just feel like it is the least approachable and probably most polarizing of the offerings here.
I am taking one star off simply for the fact that I wish there was a smaller size assortment available. For a snack just to try, this comes in with a little bit of a hefty price tag. I know it is an imported product, and I am ok paying for that. But if I could’ve gotten just 1 box of each of the 4 flavors I would’ve preferred it.
Overall though it was fun to try something new. And pulling a box out and holding it in my hand gave me instant nostalgia for my Naked Snake days. I plan to order more chocolate to keep on hand sometime and maybe a box of the plain flavor to try.

For those folks who’ve never had these, imagine a shortbread cookie that’s a bit moist. It basically melts in your mouth, which makes it surprisingly easy to swallow. Think of these things as a Japanese meal replacement or snack that just happens to have some nutrition to it instead of empty calories, but isn’t on the level of say, your typical American a protein bar or energy bar.
At this point, I’ve tried the cheese, maple, and fruit flavors. They are not overly sweet like a typical shortbread cookie – in fact the cheese is savory, not sweet – and the flavors are rather subtle. The cheese has like a hint of Cheez-It flavor, the maple has a hint of maple, and the fruit has a hint of grapefruit (at least to my palate). I would therefore guess that the chocolate is going to have just a hint of chocolate flavor. None of these are any different color – other than the packaging – or have any kind of coating or dusting; they just look like shortbread cookie sticks.
Are they worth the purchase price? Probably not, but I’ve had pricier stuff that tasted a lot worse. YMMV.

The texture is roughly same on all of them. They all share similar characteristic like being a dry but easy to eat biscuit.
Chocolate – a plain chocolate biscuit. think cocoa powder biscuit.
Fruit – light fruit flavor with citrus tones. small pieces of citrus peel adds a light bitterness.
Maple – pancake with bits of almond
Cheese – flavored like a japanese cheesecake, the spongy kind

These are all really good, except the fruit-flavored ones. They’re whack. They are fruit rind flavored, with lots of candied rind chunks in there. They get caught in your teeth and you have to pick them out afterwards with your tongue, and when you drink water to wash them down they make water taste funny because of the effect citrus rind peel has on your tastebuds (aside from kind of having that weird soapy bitter coming through in the normal tasty FOOD BLOCK generic filling of the Calorie Mate Block)
The rest of the flavors don’t have any extra chunky additives in them that get caught in your teeth, and are fine grain. The fruit bars are quite frankly an anomalous construction and pretty much what create the value in this combo pack, 3 are good and 1 is awful.

Absolutely love these! Boyfriend bought them on a whim at an Asian market we were passing through for the day. Once I found out there were more flavors, I had to buy the sample pack. They really help keep me from needlessly eating at work (12 hour overnight shifts). One of these little packs lasts me nearly all night and by then waiting until I get home is a breeze. Here’s how I rank the flavors…
1. Chocolate: Tastes just like chocolate bread. Not sugary sweet, but still tasty. By far my favorite.
2. Fruit: Initial taste is pineapple-like with the secondary being more like grapefruit/oranges. Definitely citrus and even has little pieces of fruit in it. Not very sweet either, very enjoyable.
3. Maple: By far the sweetest from the group, but not very much so. Unmistakably maple flavored.
4. Cheese: Easy to see why this isn’t a review favorite. Reminds me of something my friend used to make called “toasted cheese” which was simply about all the hard cheeses she could find melted in the oven until crispy. Definitely a cheese taste, but also just a little off, like there’s too much parmesan in it. Not disgusting, just not quite right.
