I’ve purchased other products that worked well And I just ordered this after reading some reviews thinking I would be OK with something that’s chalky or taste a little weird. This is the first time in my almost 40 years of tolerating various protein shakes, and I immediately spit this one out. This is the first time in my life that I’ve ever hated a protein shake. Was really hoping that this would be a good source of protein that was easy on the stomach. Unfortunately, it was not easy on the tastebuds. Try something else!

I am a fan of yellow pea protein because it is a complete protein. Also, it can be made thick to the consistency of milk–in cold enough water, it is bland and tastes like a reasonable replacement for milk. At room temperature, it just tastes kind of bland, but that’s okay. I’m in it for the nutritional benefit of a complete protein source at a great price, not seeking flavor country. However, when you mix it with instant coffee (as I experimented with), I found that it didn’t coagulate like whey protein does when it comes in contact with water that’s too hot. So, that makes it superior for use in coffee or hot cocoa compared to whey protein. Also, compared to a half gallon of milk, it’s also a bargain for the protein. However, there’s only 1 gram of fat and one gram of carbohydrate per serving (if I recall correctly), which means that one has to replace any fats or carbohydrates in one’s diet to the extent desired if switching from dairy.
My suggestion for getting the equivalent fats found in dairy would be a tablespoon of coconut oil, MCT oil, or sunflower oil.

Price: This is pretty much as good a deal as you’re going to get on protein. ~33 servings in a 1 kg bag for $18, and each serving has 24g of protein. That’s 792 grams of protein total, which works out to around $0.02 per gram of protein. This is an outstanding value.
Taste: It’s pure pea protein, so the taste is pretty bland. A few reviewers have described the taste as being bitter or otherwise unpalatable, but that’s not accurate. It’s just bland, raw pea protein (which is the point). Remember, most of the pea protein powders you find at your local store are combined with other ingredients such as stevia, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, etc. to make the powder more flavorful and sweet (for double or triple the price, too). If you’re used to those products then, if you try this, you may not like the taste since you’re expecting the sweetened, chocolaty version of it. In any case, you can always add extra ingredients yourself. There are tons of recipes online; my personal favorite is peanut butter and a banana mixed with some almond milk in a blender. On most days though I just combine it with some almond milk or water in a shake cup and it’s perfectly fine.
Quality: The powder itself is homogeneous and easy to scoop, and it mixes pretty well with whatever I toss it in. The bag is durable and resealable, and doesn’t take up unnecessary space. I haven’t experienced any digestion issues, excessive burps/aftertaste, gas, defecation/fecal issues, or anything like that; everything seems to pass through as pea protein should, and there are no negative effects on energy (although one thing to consider is that I always drink protein after workouts/cardio and have a healthy digestive system). The only complaint I have is that the seal on the bag (similar to a Ziploc Pinch & Seal sandwich bag) does not seal well and easily comes apart. This could partly be due to powder blocking the seal, but it seems like the seal itself is undersized. That said a dust-off followed by a good pinch usually keeps it closed well enough for me; others may need to find a suitable container for storage.
Other thoughts:
-Be aware that there is no scoop in the bag. If you don’t have a suitable scoop, there is a conversion chart on the back of the bag which converts tablespoons to grams (6 grams per tablespoon, 30 grams per serving, so 5 tablespoons per serving).
-This protein is high in iron, which makes it a great daily supplement for vegans
-Shortly after receiving my order I got an e-mail from BulkSupplements.com offering me a free sample of anything in their catalog. You may not be so lucky depending on when you’re reading this, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning on buying more than one of their products.

I bought this because the price is right and I’ve been wanting a simple, unflavored veg-based protein. I hate how every protein product out there seems to be sweet, encouraging me to crave sugar and keep my sweet tooth. Not to mention stevia-packed protein powder on top of added sweet fruits makes a protein shake almost unbearable.
I’ve got lactose intolerance so whey proteins, while delicious, often make me puff up like a balloon. Egg protein is often too sweet, has that weird egg taste and makes my lips sticky, and soy or rice proteins are too gritty. I also want to reduce my animal product consumption. I know I love peas anyways so I was hoping pure pea protein would be the savior powder I’m looking for, both with content and the great price. I’ve just made a bowl of sweet oatmeal and added a scoop of this pea protein, and am eating it as I write these pros and cons down.
Pros:
-clean vegan eating! Can’t beat 1 ingredient and the self satisfied feeling you get from eating your veggies.
-good amount of protein: 24g in a 30g serving. About your average protein scoop size and comparable to other protein powders.
-almost no bitterness, a tasty mild umami flavor. I’d like to figure out some savory applications for this.
-not terribly chalky. It’s not melt-in-your-mouth like whet protein, but it is not terrible at all.
Cons:
-It is a little chalky, so if you can’t stand any chalkiness you might want to pass it up.
-the umami flavor might overpower sweet things. For example, my oatmeal tastes almost meaty with a hint of sweet, even though it’s one of those sugar-loaded Quaker packets. It’s a bit strange but I’m fine with it.
-oddly static… it keeps flying to plastic surfaces and sticking to things. Not really something I’m used to in foods…
-animal feed scent. This smells like animal food. Not bad, but think alfalfa hay or white pepper smell. Not a deal breaker for me, but maybe to some. It certainly doesnt smell and taste like dried ice cream like whey does.
-high in sodium. Not an issue for me but may be for some.
So there are the pros and cons according to me. I’d probably buy this again because the pros outweigh the cons to me. You may be different!
