About 2 years ago I was in the hospital and, I was diagnosed with ADHD so severe I had episodes of amnesia.

What’s my amnesia like? Usually, I will completely forget brief periods of time and almost everything that occurred.

Can supplements help me recall these episodes? Probably not, those short term memories were most likely never converted into long term memories. There is nothing there to recall. Supplements can only help eliminate these episodes in the future.

Example of permanent amnesia: On rare occasions, I will receive items in the mail and I have absolutely no memory of ordering. I have even stared at a item and asked “What is it?” Usually, I’m completely unaware of these episodes of amnesia.

Am I cogent during these episodes? According to my doctor, yes. And when I manage to reverse engineer why I ordered that item, it’s very logical. But even after all that, not one memory of placing the order.

I also have more typical ADHD symptoms, basically, I’m forgetful-on-steroids. Unless, someone or something jogs my memory, it’s not coming back.

When I got out of the hospital, I was so brain-fogged I was unable to access my long term memory unless I was well-rested and had friends quizzing me to keep me on topic.

With the help of a good doctor, good nutrition and careful supplementation, I was able to recover from panic attacks, depression, control my diabetes, lose weight, take care of the arthritis, eliminate premature wrinkles (that was an unexpected side effect : ), and blow away most of the brain fog.

But the ADHD remains stubbornly untouched. OK then supplements for the brain – phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine. Inositol is covered in a separate review.

Why so late with the brain? You see I’m bipolar. Anything that works on the brain carries the risk of triggering mania.

Can Phosphatidylserine (PS) trigger mania? Well, I figured out that I’m histadelic (under-methylates histamine) so no. But the answer is yes if you are a histapenic-type bipolar.

What about phosphatidylcholine (PC)? Yes, this can trigger mania in me. Do I take it? Yes. Why do I even risk it? Because I can’t eat that many eggs without driving my LDL up 100 pts.

If you are bipolar, odds are close to 80% one of these two will trigger mania. Therapeutic doses of supplements are different for bipolar disorder. I check therapeutic doses using “Natural Healing for Bipolar Disorder” by Eva Edelman. Be careful!

I started taking PS 4 weeks ago and PC about five weeks ago. I take 500 mg of the PS and about 20 mg of lecithin.

Two weeks into it, I started noticing I was catching myself and preventing mistakes. I must have caught about 4-5 potential mistakes. That’s really high for me. My usual rate is zero. Still it might just be wishful thinking.

Four weeks into it, I got angry with a friend who asked me to walk her across the street so she could shop at a new grocery store (she is suffering from anxiety). i was surprised at my overreaction. It’s not as if she asked me to fly across the country then walk her across the street to the grocery store. Later, I suddenly had a peculiar dream-like sensation that someone *had* asked me to fly across the country and walk them across the street. Or maybe it was a dream that I’d had. More and more details filled themselves in over the span of about an hour. I really had flown across the country to help my parent across the street and to the doctor’s office. And I remember ranting about it for nearly two years. At the end, I recovered most(?) of the memory and was even angrier.

That is until I realized what had just happened. Oh, yeah. This stuff works.

Now, some of you alert and bushy-tailed ones may have noticed, it’s working unusually fast, isn’t it? Yes, I wasn’t expecting much for another few weeks. But, I expect my levels of everything were completely depleted during the hospital stay. And, I’m maxing out the anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, probiotics and also inositol. It’s possible I’m primed to respond immediately. I have noticed this same unusually rapid response to other supplements.

Is there an order to addressing these problems? Yes, if you start supplementing your brain but are completely inflamed, this will interfere with healing. Fix your inflammation and gut first because that stops/slows down everything else. Then get the antioxidants online. I recommend the “Eat Fat, Get Thin” book by Mark Hyman. It’s explained beautifully. It’s really a book about medicine, not just a diet/nutrition book. Check your library. It’s popular.

About frontloading: My doctor advocates frontloading even for supplements that may be dangerous in high doses. Why? 1) I’m clearly depleted, 2) I still need normal levels of this stuff, it’s the overload that’s dangerous, 3) there will be warning – my memory should approach normal before I build up high levels, 4) it’s really hard for someone with ADHD to remain on guard for 4-8 weeks, the typical time it takes to build up using therapeutic doses, 5) it’s easier to detect if the supplement is working.

    Update:
I discovered some doctors do prescribe omega-3 oils and PS (300 mg) for ADHD.

After I spoke to my doctor, she said that slow-motion recall more than suggested my neurotransmitters were depleted. I started taking 1 tsp of the PS. to frontload. I’ve tried it 2x and both times I became light-headed and my vision became a bit blurry. It wore off after about 2 hours. I dialed back to 1/4 tsp daily for a week, then 1 tsp again. No apparent effect. Then, I raised the lecithin levels to the suggested amount 1200 mg.

Result? I feel more alert. That’s about it. Could be coming from anything.

I’m sure once I dial up my levels of neurotransmitters, I won’t notice anything except “normal” memory.

Update 6/16/2017 – I was dead wrong about not notice anything. As far as I can tell, PS helps memory and recall, PC helps focus and concentration and then there is working memory. Due to my lopsided supplementation, my memory and recall improved faster than everything else. I would suddenly get two or three memories or thoughts and end up completely confused, distracted and MORE forgetful because I couldn’t hang onto something with the barrage of information flowing in. Rather desperate, I completely cranked the amounts of PC (over a tablespoon) and things eased up.

Then I realized stress can reduce your working memory (or RAM) and I started supplementing with rhodiola, ginseng and ashwagandha – all adaptogens that are supposed to help. Too early to tell about effects yet it has been only 4 days.

Update 6/25/2017: Did the rhodiola, ginseng and ashwagandha help? Yes, they have. To the point where my head feels a little empty and I’m constantly plagued by the feeling that I’m not recalling something important. And yet my memory isn’t back to “normal” yet. Time for another round of experiments.

Update 7/5/2017 – A lot has been going on. In spite of my issues with my brain, I took time out to investigate second careers – I would like training in how to use nutrition and supplements to help overcome medical conditions but all I can find is the MD. Sing out if you have suggestions.

Realizing lecithin is a rather dilute source of PC and hoping for something tastier, I tried Alpha GPC 50% Powder. (Yes, the flavor is much milder). This is a much more concentrated source of choline but because it’s not immediately available, it forms a reserve in your body. The effect is no matter how much or how often I take it, I have higher but steady level of focus and concentration. Unfortunately, this focus is lower than my “normal” level of focus from five years ago. This sounds great but I can’t seem to but up a significant reserve – enough that will last a week. But I’ve only been using this for less than 3 weeks. It’s possible I’m converting everything to acetylcholine and using it up to run my brain. I still use the lecithin because it has more immediate effect and I can use it to crank up my focus for about six hours.

    I notice the following improvements:

I am much more aware of the passage of time and it is more accurate – I remember to check my watch and take my medications without an alarm.
I am able to do more things in a given amount of time. Partially, this is greater focus and concentration and partially this is better recall.
I still make lists to help my memory but I can read the list and remember more than one item.
I can now do simple detail work, such as, entering events in a calendar but I tire out quickly (about 15 minutes).

This is excellent progress but tiring out after 15 minutes sounds like I’m running out of neurotransmitters to me. It turns out acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) boosts cognitive endurance. It also crosses the blood-brain barrier readily. I also added N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (NALT) which is supposed to extend cognitive endurance even in the teeth of sleep deprivation (popular with college students). It’s only been a few days but the ALCAR and NALT do push my daytime cognitive alertness to “normal” levels. Note, they work better together than alone. The problem is once I come off it, I feel like my brain is turned to jelly with my memory and focus plummeting down to pre-supplementation levels. I suspect I’m burning through reserves that I don’t possess with the cognitive endurance boosters.

I realize I probably need something that I don’t know about – so I recruited a graduate student in psychology to help me understand brain chemistry.

    Update: 8/14/17

Recently, I had cause to check my progress because

A friend complimented me on my improved driving. He noted that I drove at —- mph. (!!!!) (No officer, all the drivers on the road including me never once exceeded the speed limit. We in the Bay Area are obey the speed limit every second.) Then in tones of admiration, he proclaimed “You drove like a German. I am proud of you.” Proud? As in the Autobahn proud? H–l apparently yes.

But I’m a lousy driver: I hesitate, I’m slow, overly cautious. What could cause this? Unless, my working memory and processing speed were up. Way up. As far as I know, you can only influence these via the stress-busters.

How to test this? I decided to add numbers in my head; I’m so lousy at this I still use my fingers to count. I ran addition problems in my head from 1 x 1 to 4 x 4 digits. I stopped partially because once i got to 3 x 3 I was far past any previous limit even in elementary or high school. I’d never been able to hold 9 digits in my mind’s eye before. Five was closer to the limit. Now, I had 16. I could see them like a picture before me, each digit lighting up as I focused my attention.

It’s not the only measure of performance associated with memory and recall, but this marks the spot where the supplements have pushed my performance to a level that I have never reached.

    Update August 29, 2017

Updates will slow down because my doctor was so impressed with the addition of Acetyl – L – Carnitine (ALCAR) a cognitive booster that works by crossing the blood-brain barrier and protecting the mitochondria in the brain. It takes a while to notice the effect because the mitochondria need to heal on their own. Then, they give you the energy to operate your brain. In addition, I tried NALT, n-acetyl-l-tyrosine. This stuff crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine and norepinephrine. I’m on Vyvanse which ALSO stimulates production of dopamine and norepinephrine. So I went into overdrive and was really alert and well-focused and when I crashed I’d stripped all my reserves. What happened? My brain, hopped up on amphetamines (Vyvanse) shoved into fast forward. The mitochondria no longer had any brakes, and I thoughtfully supplied vast quantities of raw materials to produce the very neurotransmitters that make you alert and focussed. My doctor forbad me to take the NALT while I’m on Vyvanse but approved the ALCAR. Now, she’s stepping down the dose of Vyvanse so eventually I’ll be able to use the NALT. I’m guessing this will take at least 4 months.

In the meanwhile, it’s becoming clear why I’m so depleted. My gut was in lousy condition for who knows how many years.

My doctor is a big fan of Hardy Nutritionals (not on Amazon – go direct to http://www.hardynutritionals.com/) and now I am too. I had no clue their customer support was so extensive. Their product specialists will help you every step of the way, from purchase decision to support while you take the product to consultations about scheduling. I’ve been using their Olive leaf extract and their Greens and Probiotics. It’s still quite early, about 3 weeks but it looks like it is working! I’ve been able to stop supplementing with inositol. We’ll find out in 8 months if my probiotics are supplying me with enough inositol that I can quit.

BTW. I’ve started a blog at lindycheng.wordpress.com – it focuses on all the supplements I’ve been trying. Thank you.

I’m using this lecithin for my cat to help with furballs, so far it’s working good and she isn’t able to detect its flavor. It dissolves easy in humid food

  3. Curt C Buethe

I have enjoyed many of the Bulk Supplement products and enjoy both the high quality and best price. I originally wanted powdered vitamins and was willing to accept just a better than average quality but was pleasantly surprised. Personally I believe having the powdered vitamins allows fr better absorption over pills that have been compressed.

  4. Aspire

This powder appears to work as an emulsifier, but I still prefer the granular form. Good for the brain also as choline and inositol are two B vitamins in high demand there.

  5. StillLife

This is a fine powder. Just got it, but already I can tell I’ll be using it. Mixed up some yesterday in about 3/4 milk, 1/4 eggnog, with a little battery-operated whipper. It emulsifies the mixture. Also I found a recipe for a homemade version of the popular non-stick spray used on such things as frying pans and baking pans before using them: 1/2 cup lecithin (powder should work great), + 1 cup vegetable oil, blend in blender about a minute, store in refrigerator, apply evenly with brush or paper towel.

  6. KIM FROM WISCONSIN

This powder lecithin worked MUCH better than gel tab lecithin in the making of edibles. It seemed to boost potency.

  7. Emma

When i ordered this product there was an odd crust on the outside/opening of the bag. It looks like water got on the lecithin powder and crystalized it to this portion of the bag… But i hadn’t opened it yet. However, the product itself was fine inside. I double checked because i didn’t want it to be contaminated and have to order more.

  8. Frankly My Dear

I was using it to make liposomal C and for baking. it works better than the granules
