Firstly, I have to say that I am -was- a huge fan of the Rug Doctor. We’ve rented the Rug Doctor many times over the course of a few years after out carpet cleaning machine died. We did like the Rug Doctor, but when you add up the costs associated with it, $25-30 base rental + $7 for the hose, as well as the cost associated with running to the store to get it and return it, let alone the hazards associated with the last people who rented it and didn’t clean it when they were done (pet hair EVERYWHERE).
Either way, we certainly thought the Rug Doctor was good until we purchased this Bissell. As others have mentioned, it picks up to much more water and leaves your carpets much drier right after going over them. It’s been about a year since we rented the Rug Doctor. We went over the carpets in one direction and just for kicks we went over it in the other direction (vertical and horizontal). We got so much more dirt out of our carpets than we would have ever gotten with the Rug Doctor! It was just as much gross as it was amazing! This Bissell Big Green is very easy to use and comes with everything you need to get going, including 2 small bottles of solution and a sizable hose for spot cleaning. I would HIGHLY suggest you purchase additional solution (I used the Bissell Deep Clean-dark blue bottle) if you have more than 1-2 rooms to do that have really dirty carpet. I did three moderately sized rooms and had to refill 5 times. This may seem like a lot, but I went over everything twice or even three times in high traffic areas. Even with the extra passes, the carpets were dry very quickly.
After the carpet completely dried, the carpets look amazing! Before they were starting to look different colors across the carpets, and now they look uniform again. The carpets are soft, correctly colored, and vibrant. There even is a nice sheen to the carpet. I do think it pullet the carpet back up where it was more pushed down from excessive traffic because it looks better than it has in years!
I do have two of my three rooms on a second story and had to move the carpet cleaner up the stairs. The machine is heavy! I took off the dirty and clean water tanks so you basically only have the machine itself and it was a slight bit heavy to haul up the stairs. I don’t know if it would be doable for everyone without assistance.
For the three rooms, it took 5 refills of water/solution and about three hours. Make sure you do read the directions! I was not holding the dispense button enough, which did cause for a little extra time because I redid that area. You are supposed to move forward holding the button and then move backward over the same area still holding the button in a slow manner to allow the spinning brush to do it’s job. Then release the button and go forward and backward to get the excess water sucked up. Reading the directions first will surely help cut down your time.
Overall, if you are on the fence about purchasing this machine, just do it! I thought about it for a few hours and ended up just purchasing it. When you consider how much it costs over time to rent a not so great machine (now that I see how much better you can get with this machine) and time time and effort required to go get it and take it back, as well as the convenience of having your own machine if you need a quick cleanup, it’s totally worth the cost. I would HIGHLY recommend this carpet cleaner, it really DEEP DEEP cleans!
Fair warning: I have only had this machine for about a week and used it once. I was just so amazed that I couldn’t wait to write a review. If I do run into anything, I will be sure to update this review.

So far have only used Big Green to clean upholstery with the included attachment. Took out an amazing amount of dirt and stubborn stains. Incredibly easy to use and to clean out machine after using. Gave 4 stars only because haven’t tried on rugs yet. If it cleans them like the upholstery I’ll change my rating. Suction appears to be really good for removing water after cleaning. It is a heavy machine, but rolls easily enough. Nice long cord to plug in.
ADDITIONAL review……used on wool rugs with bissell professional deep cleaning product….awesome results. Did not pretreat, left rugs clean and soft, no overpowering perfume smell. Did not use the oxy pretreat because not safe for wool. There were fibres in the dirty water, so if you have an old antique uber expensive oriental you may be best to be cautious.
The other plus…after cleaning the rugs, the back of the rug was not wet. So the machines suction power must be darn good. I was a bit worried about cleaning the carpet in our rv because I had concern the rug may be left too wet and might mould. I will go ahead now with that rug.
Overall, the big green is an easy to use, easy to clean, and effective product in my opinion. Happy with this purchase.

I bought this machine out of pure frustration. I love the lightweight ease of the Bissell, easy use and two way clean. I use the Bissell Big Green Carpet Machine in a 8 bedroom house living with a large family 2 dogs included. This shampooer cleaned with ease on extra dirty carpets where using other professional carpet cleaners had failed Removed family and dog stains with ease and left my carpets looking brand new. Love it Love it Love it, worth every cent 🙂 🙂 🙂

Update: Pictures of an area rug we bought in 1994. We don’t wear shoes indoors and vacuum weekly, even did a through job before shampooing. An area rug sits on top of it. I used 2 tanks of Bissell Pet & Odor (dog had a few vomiting episodes on it over the years) cleaning solution to crisscross double clean it. It’s 13′ x 14′. It looks, feels and smells like brand new. Not bad for a 29 year old carpet.
I really love this machine. It’s saving us lots of $$$ already.
I really like this product.
Pro: Sturdy, great suction, holds enough solution to do a 10′ x 16′ room, stairs/corner tool works well with 9′ hose, 25′ long extension cord. I’ve used another name brand red Rug rental machine before and I like this better, but that was 25 years ago.
Con: Heavy 48 lbs, even when empty, but it’s sturdy and has a powerful suction pump. Will not take out stubborn stains or do miracles, so use stain remover first. Vacuum first!!! to minimize the dust/dirt suctioned. Misses about 1″ on side/front when cleaning against a wall. Leave yourself 4-6′ when backing-up.
In our dry area, the carpets are dry in 6-8 hours. Sucks up about 1.25 gallons of 1.75 gallons cleaning solution/water mix sprayed.
I’ve done several 10′ x 10′ carpets and area rung that have not been shampooed in 15+ years. We don’t wear shoes indoors, and vacuum regularly, but the waste water was brown. Will redo high traffic areas in a few months. I will also clean the carpets in our cars. Clean carpets last longer.
Uses about 6oz shampoo to a tank of 1.75 gallon of water in the tank. Mild scent to the Clean Max cleaning solution, not overpowering and fades as the carpets dry.
It’s far cheaper than renting or hiring a professional if you’re going to do this every few years. I also bought so we could do our kids house.

Excellent cleaner. Does a good job. I have 4 dogs and my carpets get very dirty at this time of the year . I have had numerous cleaners and the’ Big Green’ is the best cleaner I have had. It is not too heavy either . Very easy to fill and empty and clean. Had a couple of little problems initially but they were sorted out immediately. Very happy with the level of customer care.
