At $14 (with a $2 off coupon at the time of this writing), this is not an everyday shower/bathe to get clean soap – not for me anyway. Instead, it’s a lovely little bit of luxury because I deserve it kind of present, or for a special someone else. It’s beautifully & thoughtfully packaged & it makes a lovely presentation. I got the Grapefruit & Dead Sea Salt scented square bar of soap. I found the shape easy to hang on to & for once I managed to get through a shower without dropping the usually shaped soap on the shower floor.
As far as it being exfoliating, I noticed that one side of the soap was smooth or most definitely smoother than the other side which felt a lot more granular. I felt clean after so it did what it was supposed to do but more importantly, it didn’t leave my skin feeling dry.
I really appreciated “meeting” the founders of Bear & Joey Cosmetics in the video on the description page. It was a video basically introducing themselves & talking about what they do. I felt it was a personable touch.
Bottom Line: I enjoyed this soap from its presentation to using its exfoliating side on areas that required it, to its shape, to its scent, to it not leaving my skin feeling dry afterwards. I enjoyed it as a special gift to myself, & that I had the choice to give it to someone else & feel great about it. If I had to change anything, it would be the scent, I’d like it a little stronger, perhaps from an essential oil, which wouldn’t change its all natural formula. But that’s just a minor observation based on personal preference. 5 Stars from me.

I wanted to love this product, I really really did! It’s got the cutest packaging, and they include a very sweet note that feels genuine, so welcoming and cozy, saying how happy they are that the purchaser tried out their product. it’s also made by a fellow Canadian, so that obviously is a plus!
BUT, it just isn’t that great if a soap. There is absolutely no zippy refreshing scent of grapefruit, or if there is, it’s overpowered by the shea butter smell. And sadly, I’m just not a fan of that smell. I even had desperate hopes that once wet, the grapefruit smell would suddenly be activated, but alas, it was not. Thankfully the scent of the soap doesnt stuck to the skin.
Well, maybe the cleansing portion of the soap will be a full experience that will redeem it? well… I got bad news. It didn’t.
I get that it’s an all natural exfoliating soap, that uses sea salt as the grit to exfoliate, but it hurt like heck to use against the skin! Once the initial layer of the soap melted/washed away, exposing the sea salt, rubbing the bar against your skin, made me feel real empathy for all those times I zested a lemon. The salt scrapped/scratched my skin, making it red and angry. its like the salt dissolves ALOT slower than the rest of the bar as you use it, making it worse and worse with every moment. I kinda think that the soap would dissolve enough for the crumbs of salt to finally be free from their sudsy bindings, and just wash down the drain, instead of actually dissolving.
BUT that overwhelming smell of shea butter wasn’t just for fashion, it really did make my skin feel less dry after my shower. And my skin does feel nice, but again, I think that was more the shea butter than the sea salt.
So yeah. I don’t think I’ll ever get their exfoliant bar again, but I’ll definitely check out and see if they have a moisturizing soap line, because that portion was great. And the packaging is just too cute!

It’s a small square shaped handmade soap inside a very nice packaging. It’s supposed to be a 120g bar, but thing is, and it’s probably me being picky, but the box I received weighted 119g, including the box and everything inside. Without the box, the soap weights 101g, and that’s quite disappointing to get less than written on the box by as much as 17%, especially since the product is on the expensive side. Unless the soap is supposed to weight less, in which case, they should simply revise the weight on the packaging to give a better idea.
Also, the soap probably has a high shea butter scent and content. We have the Coffee and Orange scent, and the very mild orange scent is overpowered by something that isn’t coffee. It’s not bad, but certainly not what I expected when it comes to the scent.
So, testing the bar was the other, and last test. Like a lot of handmade soaps, it makes a very thin lather. It’s okay, and it eventually works. As for the exfoliating portion, it’s hard to say. Unless you use the bar directly, I don’t think it’s going to do much good when it comes to exfoliating, but regardless of how you use it, this soap does moisturize very well, and my skin isn’t as dry as if I was using a more typical soap.
Now, it’s handmade in Vancouver from selected ingredients which increases the price, and as a small business owner, I know how hard to can be to break through, and how much work goes into something that may or may not succeed. I also know how Amazon ratings work, and I don’t think that this product deserves a negative “3” star, so I’ll give it a 4 star, but consider it 3 and a half… 😉
I think they have something good going, but a tad more essential oil could maybe elevate the scent without compromising the rest of the soap. Maybe this is the direction they want to take with their exfoliating bars, and it’s totally fine, but if they ever make more traditional artisan soaps (i.e. non exfoliating), I think it would be preferable to introduce more scent to it. People love a pleasant smell, even if it doesn’t add anything of value to the soap.

‘Coffee’, you say?… ‘Orrrrrrrrrrannnnge, you sayyyyy?’… don’t mind if I do! *CHOMP!*
Alright, alright, don’t eat it, I guess. Although considering it’s organic shea butter and cocoa butter, it’s probably safe and possibly delicious.
Anywho, like with clothing, you always take a chance buying a hygiene product online, especially one you haven’t tried before. Personally, I knew nothing about this brand prior to ordering the Coffee & Orange exfoliating soap bar, but I’m pleased with everything I’ve experienced thus far.
Firstly, it arrives in a nice package. The design is simple, but elegant. Reminds me of the movie The Shining, but if Jack Nicholson’s character wrote children’s books and was a loving father and husband.
I appreciate EVERYTHING the box tells me:
1) Cruelty-free
2) Paraben, PEG, and Phthalate-free
3) Vegan
4) Contains organic ingredients (though not all)
5) Hand poured
6) Made in Canada!
I mean, to each their own, but each of the above points checks off a box for me, and very much contributed toward the 5-star rating.
Now, the feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel of the soap is where it’s at. I can’t quite explain it – it’s likely the shea and cocoa butters – but man does it ever feel good in your hand. Like, not even talking about lather – just holding the dry soap bar in your hand, it oozes creamy moisture. It just has a nice solid, quality feeling to it. This feeling, for me, carries over into the lather, and actually using it to shower. I found it exfoliated as well as any other similar style soap bar, but with the added benefit of its moisturizing ingredients, and the pleasant (if mild) scent.
Which brings me to the one area where I would mmmmmmmmmmmaybe have opted to give a 4.5 rating, if that option existed: Fragrance. Actually… hahaha, man, I don’t think I’ve ever done this before, but scratch what I just said. I wanted to take a couple more sniffs so I could accurately convey what I felt was lacking in the scent, but I think I’ve changed my mind. It isn’t overpowering, but it isn’t too mild. It’s semi-mildness, I think, is due to the use of real ingredients in creating the aroma (coffee seed powder, orange peel oil, etc.) as opposed to some extra strength artificial fragrance.
So yyyyyyyyyyyeah, love this soap, and looks like I’ve found an incredible new (to me, anyway) Canadian company to support! I’m cleaning up! (lol)

This item is very giftable upon arrival. There was a note from the makers inside about their journey & the company which wished the customer an enjoyable experience and the packaging was very very cute overall. I found the shea butter smell a bit overpowering but it lathered really well and my skin was very soft after using it. I like that they were a Canadian brand on Amazon as well, that was nice!
