It is a very good cream to relieve eczema itching. Using it through the day after washing hands may even treat mild eczema.

Broke out in hives last week coupled with winter dry skin and needed medicated and more hydrating balms for my arms and legs. I have mature (over 40), sensitive, acne-prone, congestion-prone, combination skin. But it is less oily in the winter. Earlier last week, I had a nasty allergic reaction to something topical and ended up with contact dermatitis that further evolved into hives. Been taking meds for it but the physical hot flares of hives and discomfort on my legs and arms have been a nuance especially when I am sleeping. I will wake to want to scratch at myself. Thankfully, the flares have been pretty mild but they still itch. I bought a slew of different lotions, balms, medicated creams, and ointments and nothing really took the edge off or hydrated as well as this tub of Aveeno Balm. I absolutely love the texture of the balm version of this as it is thick. Not sure what I can liken it to, but it isn’t a lotion or like heavy cream. Nor is it like Vaseline or petroleum. I appreciate glycerine being the first ingredient over water. The slip of this is dense but the application goes on smoothly and is very soothing. I’ve only used it a couple of times in the last 24 hours since it arrived and it has made a significant difference in my skin. I will be getting this and having it on hand from now on, especially in the winter when the air, and consequently my skin, is drier. It is extremely effective and still gentle. It will absorb into the skin, but I layered it on kinda thick so I had a hint of residue when I went to bed. But I didn’t rouse to mindlessly clawing at my legs, so there is that. Who knew oats and glycerine were so healing? I mean, I did but had no idea it would be this nice. It does have a scent, not added. I believe it comes from the oats, which isn’t unpleasant or medicinal. Just bland, which is fine with me. I think this would be suitable for use on both body and face, as needed. Affordable. No frills. Effective.

This is a good product to use a night. It keeps the skin very moist and helps to minimize the itchy feeling.

I love this stuff. It is the only thing to provide me relief from the eczema covering both my hands and arms, all night. It doesn’t leave me greasy like aquaphor or vaseline but there is a slight “cakey” feeling before it soaks all the way in. My only issue is I have now ordered this 5 times from Amazon, and I’ve received ONE out of the five completely sealed. The other four have been sent with the inner seal partially ripped open/completely open. Twice now I’ve ordered two at a time, first time I got one completely sealed (the one and only!) and the one RIGHT NEXT TO IT in the box was opened like it was someone’s return. I thought it was maybe a random mistake and so I reordered the same way and it happened again although this time both were unsealed. I just received another one that didn’t have the outer plastic but the inner seal didn’t look like it had been opened before although still not glued all the way around. I wish that it wasn’t cheaper/easier to order it from Amazon so I could just pick it up in store and check the seals there because I really love this stuff and I would stock up on it if I knew I would be getting ones I could trust.

Overall this is phenomenal in terms of how well it moisturizes skin and holds that moisture in all day during the brutal winter. It has the ability to reverse patches of dry skin within a couple of weeks. The scent is nonexistent and the consistency is very rich and thick. Use your palms to rub it a few times to warm the balm before applying to skin or you can use way too much. It does have a slight stickiness to it which isn’t the worst, but be aware of that. It is mainly because it’s so rich.

The thing with eczema, for me, anyway, is that scratching is almost psychologically therapeutic as well as a bit obsessive. Once I start, I can’t stop – sound familiar? But when I scratch, even a little bit – oh, sweet relief – the eczema spreads dramatically and takes forever to heal. This cream not only soothes the itch, it also leaves a protective barrier that lets me know it’s still there and that curbs my temptation to scratch. I transferred some in a small container so I could put it on throughout the day. There’s no smell or telltale sheen so I can still wear skirts and shorts. The texture is a little bit like Vaseline, but it contains no petroleum products, and it absorbs very quickly leaving behind a very soft, satiny feel. The best though is I can put on once before bed and make it through the night. With other creams, I wake up scratching at least three or four times! Overall, the quality and performance are fantastic, especially for the price.

I bought the 11oz. jar over 2 years ago and am only halfway through it. Pros: a good light moisturizer, and doesn’t irritate my hands. Cons: might be more expensive than Vaseline, plus makes my hands so slippery I can’t screw the jar shut afterward. The workaround I use is to wet my fingertips, and dry them off, then I can screw the lid shut.
Aveeno is a good, but light, moisturizer; Vaseline stays longer on the skin and might be cheaper. When using Vaseline, immediately after drying your hands, squeeze a pea sized amount of Vaseline onto hands and rub together briskly. Then use a tissue to remove excess Vaseline (so no need to wear cotton gloves afterward). I use squeeze tubes of Vaseline to avoid messiness and to prevent contamination of the remainder. If my hands are excessively dry, at bedtime I smear on Vaseline thickly and wear cotton gloves to bed.
CONCLUSION: Both products work well — I have very bad eczema on my hands. Neither will affect the itching (you need a prescription salve for that). Neither will prevent my eczema, but if I don’t moisturize constantly, my eczema gets worse. Vaseline might be cheaper than Aveeno, but I haven’t checked.
HINT: as my eczema appears to be heaviest where I grip my tablet, I try to wear cotton gloves when handling the tablet. Even this doesn’t prevent it entirely (possibly I haven’t discovered all the triggers), but I’m Also VERY allergic to nickel, so this may have something to do with it.
