Finding a mineral based sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast on darker skin can be difficult. I have a light brown complexion and this product when initially put on, left a slight white cast on my face. Since I’m a male I didn’t want to walk around with the appearance as if I was wearing make up. So, I wasn’t sure if I would continue to use this, but after wearing it for a few minutes, I noticed it began to set. The white cast became more subtle and seemed to almost blend with my complexion. While sweating during hot weather, the sunscreen didn’t get into my eyes. But, I did notice bumps forming and the next morning I did experience a slight break out. The sunscreen was the only new product or change in skin care routine that occurred, so I tend to think that it caused the breakout. The formula has a nice creamy texture and seems gentle on the skin, but it’s thick and maybe it may clog pores, causing breakouts in some people.
If it wasn’t for the potential breakout, I would have really liked this mineral sunscreen..

So, first thing you should know about me is that I live and breathe mineral sunscreen. Chemical sunscreen just burns my face and gives me hives, and it isn’t ocean safe, either. I am literally always down for trying a new mineral sunscreen, in the never ending quest for the best sunscreen for my skin. Speaking of which, it tends to be dehydrated and on the drier side, and sensitive as well, and I am a woman who is mid-life, with all the fun changes that we start to see at this age. Fun! This Kombucha The Simple Shield popped up as an offering on the Vine program, and even though is said “balancing” and “oil free”, I thought I would give it a try. To be honest, many of the mineral sunscreens out there that claim to be hydrating are not, so I think you just have to try a product out to see how it works for your skin. I figured this would work as a sunscreen, but likely be too drying for my skin. I was wrong! After cleansing and a hydrating serum, I applied this over my face, and I was left with positively GLOWING skin. I mean, I was impressed! More impressive was the fact that the moisture level was maintained all day. So often a mineral sunscreen will just leave my face feeling parched after a few hours, but this did not do that, and my skin looked AMAZING! You know that JLo glow we all want? It’s here in this yellow bottle! Speaking of which, I have a love/hate relationship with the bottle. The concept is super cool- it’s refillable! Yay for the environmentalists- or is it? It actually seems like a LOT of extra plastic packaging. The outer container is a thick plastic, and the inner container a thinner plastic. It is designed so that you can twist the base to “pop” the inner container up to use the pump dispenser. Truthfully, if you don’t plan on traveling with this, don’t bother with the dispenser and just buy yourself the refill. The refill still pumps independent of the extra outer plastic holder. Like I said, it’s an interesting concept, but I just don’t think it was necessarily fully thought out, as it seems like significantly more plastic than an average container would have…and why not make it glass? Or a corn based plastic that would compost down eventually? This product is likely targeted towards younger folks, with all the claims of keeping your pores “gunk free”, and the younger generations see through the nonsense of green washing, so I think this company can definitely improve the packaging for this. Aside from that, the lotion is thicker than my absolute favorite facial sunscreen, but this also comes at a lower cost. As the weather heats up, I will likely gravitate towards my thinner, but just as effective preferred sunscreen, but this Kombucha sunscreen has definitely earned itself a top spot on my beauty counter for cooler weather, when I can handle the thicker texture. And ladies in mid-age, do not be put off by the oil free and gunk free pores claim- there are hydrators and ceramides in here, and you’d be remiss to not at least try it. Particularly as it comes at such an affordable price point.

The twist up bottle to prevent accidental dispensing is novel and effective. The product is easy to apply and it stays put well. It does leave a white cast because of the zinc oxide but I am familiar enough with mineral sunscreen to expect that. The smell is so subtle that I’d describe the product as unscented. My skin feels good after application. I have sensitivity issues with many facial sunscreens but this one provided protection without irritation even with sweat running into my eyes.
I don’t love the price tag but it really is a top notch product!

The first thing I notice about this sunscreen is the clever bottle design. You’ll need to twist the bottom to move the pump up. It locks in and you can feel it when twisting it open or close. By itself, the bottle feels very big for a 30 ml (1 fl. oz.) bottle. It’s meant to be replaceable with the purchasing of refill bottles that can be placed inside. My issue is that it does use a good amount of plastic as is. You can pull it out straight from the pump to change out the refill bottle, which still uses a good amount of plastic. The pump can be twisted off at that point. Honestly, at 30 ml, I still think it could have been designed to be smaller.
The sunscreen itself does feel lightweight for a mineral based sunscreen. It has added moisturizing ingredients to make a good choice as a facial sunscreen. It doesn’t leave any white cast at all. There is some residual leftover that leaves a clear film but is not greasy or oily feeling. It does leave a little sticky feeling but is very minimal.
There is no claim to be reef safe and is meant more for daily use at SPF 30. It does work very well for daily use.

I have a preference for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for my facial skin care in the sun, but those products tend to leave my face extremely white from those ingredients. This Kombucha face sunscreen did not!! The lotion went on smoothly and did NOT leave a white residue that made me look like a ghost! It blended in so easily! It also does not have a distinctive smell – low odor completely! I love this product and will likely order more, especially if there is a 50 SPF available as well!
The tube turned up from the bottom like a deodorant container or a lip balm. Once rolled up/open, the lotion pumps out in small dollups. The top can then be rolled back down to avoid accidentally squeezing the lotion out when in your bag or handled by small children!
The sun protection is hard to gauge for me on this, because I tend to use multiple products on my face that contain sun protection. I did not burn on my face this last week during vacation, though, and I used this product for a few days at the pool or beach. I also made sure to reapply often. All in all, this is a good product, and I would recommend it.
