   I am an experienced home whitener and have professionally made, custom trays specifically for whitening my teeth. I have used many brands and formulations over the last 15 years and frequently get compliments on my teeth. I understand how much gel goes in the tray and I don’t leave it on for longer than directed. I was ordering my beloved Opalessence whitener (amazing, recommend) and fell for the ‘other people bought’ little ad for this gel. I read the reviews and thought that since the price was less, but the peroxide percentage was higher, it was worth a try. MISTAKE. BIG MISTAKE!

   This whitening gel has a different viscosity and thanks to gravity and the higher concentration of active ingredients here, the gel slid down just enough on my bottoms teeth to kiss the top of my gums. It felt uncomfortable pretty quickly and I immediately pulled the trays out and rinsed. My gums were screaming red and looked cracked – I have never seen such a thing in my life. I’m 41 and have never had a cavity in my life, I really make sure to keep my teeth and gums healthy and I was horrified. Over the next two days, my gums started to blister, peel, and bleed. Naturally when a soft tissue is injured and peels, it will impact neighboring tissue and what started at the very top where the gel dripped in some areas, quickly looked like I had some horrifying condition that affected more of my gums than it actually did. It is painful and unsightly and I realize that it’s my fault for applying the same amount as I have for 15 years instead of going much slower and testing the viscosity. My top gums, where gravity would pull the gel down and away from the gum line did not suffer the same nightmare. But the difference in whiteness from my my normal brand, with a safer concentration, to this one is negligible at best.

   I can only imagine the damage this product could quickly cause if left on longer or if used by someone unaccustomed to whitening. I have NEVER burned my gums in all the years I have done this and knew what to look out for, and it still happened. I don’t think the whitening results are worth the risk and damage. Gum health is tied to heart health and damaged/reduced gum tissue can lead to a host of problems and require grafts to repair. I am horrified at the reviews where people left it on despite feeling a burning or stinging sensation. That’s not normal. That’s not healthy. I will never buy or use this product again nor will I recommend it. There are so many better options out there. Skip this and avoid looking like a bad dental experiment for days/weeks until your gums recover from this nasty whitener.

   About 2 weeks ago, I looked in my car visor mirror because I thought I had something in my teeth. It was daylight and I was horrified how stained my teeth had gotten since I last used a whitening treatment and ordered this whitening gel the same day. The last time I whitened, I used the same brand, but 35% strength with results I was very happy with. I drink way too much Diet Coke daily and I am a regular smoker-which I’m only sharing out of embarrassment for my teeth being so stained in my before pics.

   I have extremely sensitive teeth and gums, though because I didn’t have sensitivity with the 35% solution and my teeth were more stained then when I started that treatment, I ordered the 44%. I have a ways to go and will keep using this gel until the stains are gone, though I’m sharing the results as of today after the first 11 treatments. I bought the 3 pack of gel, and I have enough gel for 19 more treatments, so there’s hope.

   As for the light-years ago, I bought a $200 or so whitening light/mouthpiece and gel pack at Sephora, so I used that as my light source. I kept up with the gel of that brand until I got too frustrated with the round shaped twisty applicator. The syringe applicator of this brand is SO much easier to use and ensures that I get every last drop of gel, unlike the other applicator I had used for years.

   My teeth and gums are too sensitive for white strips, and although effective, I couldn’t eat or drink for hours after I removed them and my teeth were looking a bit translucent. The only sensitivity I noticed with this 44% gel was during the 4th straight day of treatment. I felt a little stinging on my bottom gumline that went away after a few minutes so I kept the gel/mouthpiece in. No pain, no gain mentality. When I went to take pics after my 4th treatment, I noticed my bottom gums were white, which disappeared in about 10 minutes. It doesn’t look great in the pic, though my gums didn’t hurt at all and didn’t shed as I read in some other reviews before I bought this. I took a one day break between treatments 4 and 5 just in case my gums were too sensitive. Treatment 5 went smoothly and I didn’t have gum irritation or sensitivity, though I noticed a slight sensation in my teeth when I ate hours later. I then took a 1 day break between days 5 and 6, only because I was busy and forgot. I haven’t had any sensitivity (nor taken any days off) for the last 5 treatments and I’ve only had one day in 11 treatments with minor sensitivity.

   All pics attached are unretouched outside of croping and were taken outside. I added the treatment day in pink in the upper right corner of each pic. Day 6 after pics were taken close to sunset so they appear a little darker than the other days. I made it a daily routine to do a side-by-side daylight pic from before my first treatment to after that days treatment to motivate me to keep going. I could see the gel was working after each treatment, and now I’m far enough along where I’m not as embarrassed to show the before pics.

   I would definitely recommend this gel and I’m excited to keep going!

   This an excellent product outside of a dentist office. Some reviewers state product does not last for ten uses, but if you use it correctly, it definitely does. It takes a tiny bit in your trays each time. Do not over-fill. The whitening is as advertised.

    I’ve tried multiple brands of teeth whitening gel and this one is definitely top 3. Works great!
