I started taking the original AREDS vision supplements some years ago — at the time I had a very long commute to and from work and I was noticing that it was becoming quite difficult to read the freeway signs until I was almost on top of them (good thing I didn’t need the directions!) + I was also noticing that my night vision was becoming worse. My father had many problems with his vision and my brother or I often accompanied him to his ophthalmologist. He had many prescriptions and went through many procedures and his eyesight just kept deteriorating. We already knew there was a genetic component to his eye diseases, but the eye specialist was kind enough to have some recommendations for both of us as well. One of her suggestions was to start taking supplements based on the AREDS clinical study. It wasn’t immediate, but I did notice an improvement in both the clarity of my vision — I could read signs again! and I could also tell that my night vision was sharper. I somehow stopped taking my supplements two years ago when I became really ill, but now that I am past the worst of it and slowly recovering, I have started taking the supplements again. There are so many to choose from but I try to follow the revised AREDS2 recommendations so I can hopefully lower the risks to my vision. There are lots of different formulations now with various tweaks to add in or remove various components so it takes a little work to find the best one. Plus it is important to factor in the ingredients in other supplements that I am taking. I actually had a speed-sheet going for a while…
I have tried several versions from VisiVite and I think the overall quality is excellent. This particular supplement has calcium added, but is free of Vitamin A as well as both copper and zinc, which is optimal for my use. This formulation contains 10 mg of Lutein and 2 mg of Zeaxhanthin per serving (2 capsules). I went to the brand’s website to make it easier to compare the different formulations. I appreciate that this supplement is manufactured in a cGMP facility for Vitamin Science (a US based company) but I’m not sure where it is actually made). I went to the brand’s website to make it easier to compare the different versions. Obviously I can’t speak to any short-term results regarding this or any other supplement. I can way that these capsules are easy for me to get down and don’t cause any aftertaste or digestive upset. The current price of $70.85 for a three month supply represents a significant cash outlay upfront, but seems reasonable when the cost is broken down by month. I think they are a bit pricey but well worth the investment.

The only thing wrong with these vitamins is the price. They are almost double the price of the name-brand AREDS 2 vitamins. If you can’t take copper or zinc, then I guess these AREDS 2 formula vitamins might be your only option. If it doesn’t matter to you, this is a very expensive alternative.

Summary: As of late, it seems like old age is catching up, or maybe it’s all those telework hours from C19… so I decided to give a couple of eye supplements a try. This review is for six (6) Vine products, and also threw in the Amazon’s Choice OCUVITE for comparison.

Observations: From a quick search, it appears that lutein and zeaxanthin are the main two ingredients to look for when it comes to eye health. All contain them, except BRONSON (which appears to be more like a general purpose multivitamin). The three offerings from VISIVITE have varying levels of Lutein & Zeaxanthin, so that you can adjust for, or eliminate all other supplements than those two.  Since I already take a daily vitamin, I will be trying the Super Lutein 444 version first; the engineer in me also wants to eliminate the other “variables” so that I can truly determine if the L&Z are effective at improving vision.

Recommendation: Short of being a doctor or scientist, (being an engineer doesn’t quite cut it), I’m going to recommend the Amazon choice based on cost, and reviews/ratings. Do spend a minute to read some of the critical reviews, which gives me insight into any potential problems if I decide to try a certain product. For any health product, we really only consider Made in the USA, and products which have all the relevant certifications and testing.

Pros (all VisiVite): Very specific offerings; based on the AREDS2 study.
Cons (all VisiVite): Cons (cost, but worth the specific formulation).
Conclusion (all VisiVite): Rating all the VisiVites 5-stars (speciality).
Conclusion (overall): The supplement market is vast, and the eye specific sector is no different. Do your own research, and take good notes (on what works, and what doesn’t). My first choice would be OCUVITE by B&L, any of the VisiVites and finally VITEYES.

From my wife Sarah: I’m happy with the quality of this product. It’s free of the allergens I’m concerned about, including gluten, shellfish, tree nuts, fish, eggs, milk, soy, peanuts. That’s so appreciated. I prefer to have the zinc and copper out of it, so I can control what I’m getting through other products, and I don’t want excess. Both of those minerals are bad for you if you get too much.
