I, like many of you, have lost count of how many pre-workout supplements I’ve tried. There always seems to be a formulation that promises better results than competitors, with better flavors, and a cleaner ingredient list. NOW Sports is a brand I’m only partially familiar with, having tried a few from their lineup. I do have a positive regard for their products as a whole, but I believe this is my favorite pre-workout from NOW thus far. The ingredient list is stacked, truly, and the caffeine content is nothing to scoff at.

Certainly, you will be able to find pre-workouts with double the caffeine content per serving, but 200mg is, frankly, an ideal dose for the average person. The inclusion of ingredients “creatine” and “L-Carnitine” are well-reasoned, yet the absence of many of the buzzier ingredients actually makes me happy. While you don’t get deer antler velvet, shilajit, or a cocktail of nootropics with this one, you do get straight-forward, clinically researched additional ingredients that work in tandem with each other.

There are quite a good deal of functional ingredients for the average gymhead, but there isn’t so much in here that would cause pause. My one qualm is perhaps with the sheer volume that comes within a serving. This has about 30 servings, but seems to require a much heftier scoop than expected. I’m uncertain if this is due to the sheer volume of active ingredients, or to accommodate the flavor (which I think is slightly above average), but perhaps a more concentrated formula may prove to be a noticeable improvement.

Otherwise, I’m really happy with this one! Straight-forward, nice tasting, without excessive caffeine or anything fishy in the ingredient list.

My husband was the one to open this drink mix. He was SERIOUSLY unimpressed when he dumped out the mix and spent 5 minutes trying to find the scoop just to notice that the instructions say “1-1 1/2 Tablespoons” and after checking to be sure, found out that there was in fact- no scoop. His reaction was an angry, “It’s 2025, why does a powder supplement NOT come with a scoop?”

At first, mixed as directed, it had a light tingly watermelon flavor, it tasted like flavored water, would probably do very well carbonated. There was a bitter aftertaste. A friend of mine tried the drink as well, and he agreed that there is a really bad aftertaste.

My husband took it to work and had this to say about the drink: The taste gets worse as worse the longer you let it sit after mixing, best taste is within the 30 minutes as recommended Turns into a beet-like flavor after an hour or so, unpleasant aftertaste so definitely consume early.

If rated on the flavor alone, the rating would be much lower (probably a 1), but since it is marketed as a pre-workout energy supplement drink and works as such, it got a decent review, with only a star taken off for the flavor. So if flavor is as important to you as it is for me, I would not recommend this drink- but if you tolerate flavor in order to get the benefit, this will give you what you need.

Since this is being rated on usage, this is the info on that:

It mixes well, but there will always be some powder residue. There is is non-jittery energy boost. It is not a high energy focus blend, there is no crash and just tapers off, and there is some residual muscle fatigue (don’t expect a miracle drug). It is not a high nitric oxide mix (there are ingredients that will boost production of nitric oxide, but there is no “pump”). In the end, it’s more for continuous energy than a quick boost formulation.

First: in case it is necessary to say it, don’t treat this like gatorade crystals. This is not in any way like standard sports drinks: it contains almost no sugars, it contains a great deal of other stuff, and if consumed like gatorade, it would not be healthy. For starters, one recommended dose of 1.5 tablespoons contains 2 coffee cups worth of caffeine. For the rest: read the label carefully, including the full caution notice. That is provided for you in the advertising copy.
This probably is what it says it is (I would need to do lab analysis to know – I am just drinking it and reading the label). The one component it contains that I know well is creatine. I am used to chugging a shot of 1 teaspoon creatine powder in a slurry with water – I put it back fast because it tastes terrible. This product has stevia to mask the creatine and perhaps other components. Mixed to the proportions they suggest, I couldn’t be comfortable drinking a 15 ounce recommended dose: it is both intensely bitter and stevia-sweet. I would prefer to dilute it with another 15 ounces for it not to be overbearing. But are you ready to swallow 4 cups of water? That is probably too much pre-hydration, for most purposes. I’ll play around with it and see whether I can habituate to a more highly concentrated dose.
A very small component of this does not dissolve in the water (perhaps it’s the creatine). Shake it up to clear that stuff the last swallow.

This pre workout tastes really good. I have been diluting a half serving in 16oz of water since I don’t need as much caffeine, but even with a half serving I felt like my five mile run wasn’t quite as hard and I recovered a little quicker than usual. It dissolved very well when shaken with some ice and water in my water bottle. My favorite thing is the taste though, watermelon flavored beverages are yummy!

  5. Ang

I was really excited for this as I love watermelon flavor and this isn’t a normal flavor for energy supplements.

This powder packs a lot of flavor. If you follow the instructions and even use quite a few extra ounces of water, this is like a group of ninjas punching you in your face it’s so sweet. I tried a few times by adding more water but the flavor to water ratio just doesn’t match up very well.

Everyone has different tastes though so if you like watermelon, it may be worth a shot to try this.
