I have been on Slo-Niacin Polygel for 5 yrs. I cannot take the many different types of statins and even with exercise and a heart healthy diet, my cholesterol was remaining unbelievably high. I was having at least one heart cath done per yr after undergoing a CABG in 2000. Each time, stents were needed. I explained to my cardiologist that I was beginning to lose some feeling in the top of my right leg plus there had to be something that could be done. I ask him if an endocrinologist could find the problem. He referred to me to a professor/MD at UT. With diagnostic testing, med history and his bag of knowledge and whatever, he got to the bottom of the problem. He put me on a regimen which I have stuck with, continuing with the heart healthy diet, exercise and supplements and vitamins. Seems that lupus had worked quite a number on my metabolic system as well as inheriting a few bad genes. The doctor instructed me how and when to take the Slo-Niacin and I have had very few problems with the side effect of flushing unless I ignore those instructions. This is the only form of niacin which he prescribed and told me to not talk any other product. Slo-Niacin is designed to reduce the incidence of flushing. I recommend that a person take Slo-Niacin under the supervision of an MD. I do have blood work done every 3 to 4 months. If there is a problem it will be evident. The Slo-Niacin does an excellent job of maintaining good cholesterol (HDL) within the normal range. I recently had to have a cath done but the problem was caused by restenosis(scar tissue in 3 of the stents) which has nothing to do with cholesterol.

Ever since my doctor suggested to take niacin I have always wanted to take this product because I have heard such good things. Well as far as I know it had been working but I was taking the full pill. After a couple nights of waking up to hot skin and pins/needles feeling I decided to cut the pill in half. Well a few days into the half pills and things were good until the middle of the night hot skin and pins/needles feeling. Unfortunately these are not for me, and maybe if they come up with a lower dose flush free time release, I would try it again. (Let me please note I have super sensitive skin and rosacea, so I’m not sure if that also had something to do with the interaction)

Getting Slo-Niacin at a good price really beats the grotesquely over-priced Niaspan and doesn’t require a prescription. I didn’t give a 5-star rating for only one important reason:

I am very aware of the flushing reaction intensity and how it varies. Successful use of either product requires proper preparation: 1 325 mg coated Bayer-type Aspirin a half hour before taking the meds (4 at a time) accompanied by a small low-fat snack [unless I have eaten too close to the time of taking] pretty much conquers 85-100% of the flushing if awake and really doesn’t interfere with sleeping, if you can get to sleep within a half hour. I don’t try.

To get the triglycerides level improvement, you really have to get to 2000 mg, and it’s a long road to get there even with Niaspan as I did. The levels were really not improved much prior to that, but I persevered upping it 500 mg at a time. Then, slowly the levels dropped, eventually dramatically. YMMV, but be prepared for very belated gratification; it’s your health, not a race.

From the relative flushing problems compared to Niaspan, it is clearly only the slightest potential nuisance not using Niaspan, but my pocket appreciates the dramatic price difference. But I am concerned that to start with Slo-Niacin and take those steps might take far longer and/or be more difficult to achieve. On the plus side, Slo-Niacin can be cut in half, so there can be twice as many steps to get there.

It is not clear if it is acceptable to break up the dosing into two to four independent sessions, but if you have a complicated medicine regimen [I do] this may not be practical [especially since each would still need Aspirin and maybe a snack. Note that this is regular Aspirin, the “baby” heart heath Aspirin cannot be used; it’s designed to release in the intestines, not the stomach where the Niacin is absorbed.

Of course, if you have money to burn, go waste it on Niaspan. I did for awhile, but no more.

Most of the bad reviews on this product are from poorly informed reviewers. One reviewer claimed that Slo-Niacin’s ingredients lowered HDL. This is nonsense. People, the active ingredient here is Nicotinic Acid, or Niacin. Most people tolerate it very easily, as the delivery system allows it to enter your system Slo-ly. I take 2000 mg a day, 1000 mg in the morning, and 1000 before I go to bed. I was on Crestor and Niaspan (prescription Niacin) at 1000 mg and my cholesterol readings were still not low enough.

My doctor wanted to increase my Niaspan to 2000 mg, but it would have cost me $660 for 90 day’s supply, or $2,640 a year. Slo-Niacin at the present dosage will cost me $135!! After 6 weeks after adding Slo-Niacin, my my total cholesterol went from 170 to 149, my HDL went from 42 to 60, my LDL went from 84 to 80, and my triglycerides went from 86 to 42. I have had zero side effects (I do get flushing from plain Nicotinic Acid, but none from Slo-Niacin).

This product has been on the market for over 20 years, and Upsher-Smith, its manufacturer has been manufacturing both non-prescription and prescription medications since 1919. It is a respected and trusted pharmaceutical company.

Niacin does not work for all people, but it does for the vast majority. It has been proven safe and effective in numerous clinical trials, including one at the Mayo clinic in the 1950’s.

This isn’t snake oil. But if you take over 500 mg, you need to be monitored by a physician. In my case, my liver enzymes actually went DOWN, and are well within normal range.

I take this everyday, no problems with it
