I have been using turmeric for a while for joint support. I have knee issues due to the mini sports I played in high school and I also broke my leg above and below the knee and 2017. Tumor has helped with swelling and pain and also with a pain that I used to get at night while I slept. When I read about the benefits of adding boswella along with turmeric I was really excited to see if it would make a difference. It really has! I have no knee pain or swelling and I also feel better overall. I purchased this product for my 85 year old Godmother because of stiffness and joint pain. She says that she’s noticed a difference after only a week of use. I told her to keep taking it and see what happens after a month. But I’m really hopeful for the outcome and would recommend this product to anyone suffering from joint pain.

***Updated Review***
It’s been about a month since I reached out to Herbamama about the contents of their turmeric supplement. They’ve never responded to me. And this supplement hasn’t decreased my joint pain. Very disappointing.
***Original Review***
I’ve reached out to this company’s customer support team about the kind of turmeric in these capsules, but I haven’t heard back from them. There are two predominant kinds of turmeric–yellow/orange and white. The two have different parmacological profiles, even if these overlap somewhat. Yellow/orange turmeric is far more effective for joint pain. I have a knee injury from playing soccer in college. Other than dangerous long-term use of anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen, only high-dose turmeric AND boswellia quell my pain. I need about 1.5 grams of each per day. This gets expensive, so I’m always looking for better deals. I found this product at a slightly lower cost than my regular brand. My regular brand–all the turmeric/boswellia 1:1 mixes I’ve tried over the years–is a deep orange color as you’d expect from the active pigment. But Herbamama’s concoction is pale grey, suggestive of the use of white turmeric.
The ultimate test, for me, of a turmeric/boswellia supplement’s effectiveness is whether I feel a diminishment of pain within 24-hours of taking it. This has NEVER failed to happen using other reputable brands with high enough doses (≥ 1500mg each/day). Sadly, after a week of using Herbamama’s supplement, I feel very little pain improvement. So it’s back to my standard brand.
I wish the Herbamama support team had just returned my email inquiry on their website. This would have gone a long way to dispel any feelings of resentment over possibly misleading advertising. The Amazon product page advertises “Curcuma longa” as the active curcumin species, not Curcuma zedoaria, one of the white species. There are over 100 species of these Zingiberaceae plants and their active physiological properties vary quite a bit. While both C. longa & C. zedoaria have anti-inflammatory properties, the chemical constituents responsible vary. In yellow turmeric, the anti-inflammatory compounds appear to result from the curcuminoids themselves while in white turmeric they issue from volatile essential oils easily lost during manufacturing processes. Several research studies (like Avula, et al., 2012, Quantitative determination of Curcuminoids from the roots of C. longa, Curcuma species and dietary supplements using UPLC-UV-MS method, Journal of Chromatography Separation Techniques, 3:120) show there can be as much as a 100,000-factor increase in active curcuminoids from white to yellow turmeric. Other reproduced studies also show yellow turmeric is more effective in other areas–like antimicrobial and free-radical scavenging activities.
So it is important for the consumer to have confirmation of the kind of turmeric used in a supplement, especially given supplements are not regulated in the US. As customer support hasn’t replied to me BUT I am outside my Amazon 30-day refund window (I was finishing my last bottle of my regular brand before starting Herbamama’s), I’ll just have to take the loss and re-purchase my regular brand. Caveat emptor.
