I discovered krill oil several years ago and loved its many benefits. One of the surprising ones I hadn’t expected was that the very painful and nearly debilitating PMS symptoms that kept me in bed at least one or two days every month virtually disappeared! Cramps, migraines, fatigue…they were all reduced so dramatically it felt like a miracle. I had no idea what the source of this ‘miracle’ was until I came across an article about using krill oil to treat PMS. Bingo!
I guess I read too much because I also became aware of a growing concern about humans harvesting Antarctic krill. By some calculations, krill populations have dropped by up to 80% in recent decades. And it isn’t just overfishing that is the problem, it’s also climate change. Krill need sea ice to live, but warmer temperatures at the poles have greatly reduced it. A lot of animals rely on the krill to survive, including the biggest animal to ever live on this planet, the blue whale. These animals are starving and their numbers are dropping rapidly. I love whales, so this was terrible news to me, but I stopped taking krill oil because I didn’t want to contribute to the problem.
That’s why I was so happy to learn about Testa Omega-3 Vrill, a completely plant-derived supplement with the phospholipids and astaxanthin I loved from krill oil, plus even more Omega-3 (DHA and EPA)! It is a vegan formula derived from algae in an easy-to-swallow gelatin-free capsule. I have been taking the recommended serving of two a day for a few weeks and I feel great! I have had no problems with this product. No acid reflux, no weird burps, no strange aftertaste. Other similar products that come in a bottle often clump together, but these come in blister packs that prevent the capsules from sticking.
Testa Omega-3 Vrill is kind of expensive, at least for my budget. I hope the price might come down to make it more affordable, but I do think it is worth its price. It’s a great product and I am very happy to have found it. I love that I can get the benefits I want while leaving the krill for the marine animals that depend on them!

I have been vegan for over 10 years. Back in the day it was hard to find Algal DHA. It was expensive and it still tasted fishy and yucky and many of them had nasty cover up flavorings that made things worse. In addition most of them were very underdosed. The best supplement I found many years ago was Ovega 3. I still had issues with the fishy taste and I had to go to great lengths to get it on sale so I could take enough to get a decent dose for inflammation.
The DHA/EPA levels in these capsules are roughly comprable to the Ovega 3 I used to take, they have just a few more mgs but basically the same ratio. What makes these Omega 3 pills special is the addition of Astaxanthin and Phospholipids/phosphatidylcholine as well as vitamin E and A.
Amazon sometimes has a lot of sketchy supplements on their site and this is not one of them. I was surprised to see another review claiming this. If you check the website for Testa, they outline the process of making the algal oil. It is in depth and sustainably grown and processed in the USA. The Vrill website itself does look a bit sketchier but I think it is because this is a European based startup and has some typos. I would like to see the Testa site updated with the Vrill product and more processing information there, but the testa site has enough to make me reassured about the company and its goals, and this is something I really support. If you want to talk about sketchy, well, why have we had fish oil supplements pushed on us for years but even before vegan was trendy, the push for Algal oil/DHA for babies was pretty strong due to the mercury content? There is no reason to get second hand oil from fish other than it’s cheaper and a lazier process.
The astaxanthin is appreciated but note that it’s at a pretty small dose in these pills vs what you would get by buying it otherwise, however vegan astaxanthin can be harder to find. The phosphatidylcholine content is actually comparable to the pills that supply them normally, and a lot of times those have gelatin capsules.
Some people have complained about the blister packs but I prefer that because I can be assured of the freshness of the oil. There is nothing stopping you from taking them out and putting them in a pill case for later. Taking them all out would probably take a few minutes at most.
Since I have taken this for some joint pain I was having I seem to be having less pain, slightly better mobility and possibly improved eyesight from the astaxanthin. I am not sure of any cognitive benefits as of yet but the phosphatidylcholine is appreciated.
One thing to take note with this supplement is that sometimes choline supplements can cause issues and there have been metastudies saying that supplementing daily with vitamin E can be bad for you. If you are worried about any possible interactions os side effects you may want to stick to a basic algail oil, but for me I welcome the extra ingredients. I think it is a nice balance as you’d have to pay much more to get vegan supplements of the same kind and if you’re not focusing totally on the other benefits ti’s cool to get some of them as an added bonus in your algal oil for the same price.
If you don’t have any issue with the extra ingredients you really can’t go wrong, as this is superb quality, and similar in price to normal algal supplements so the extra stuff are basically freebies. I hope this company goes far – I think there is a big future in initiatives like this!

I have been using this brand for several years, however, the last two packs I ordered came with an expiration date a few weeks away.
After reading my note, the company immediately wrote back and reimbursed me for the two packs. Great customer service! Thank you very much!
