  1. TKWM

There has been a lot of reporting about increasing rates of bowel issues among younger people, so I try to be proactive about gut health. I was drawn to this supplement because of the combination of probiotic, prebiotic, and enzymatic ingredients as well as being made by a US-based and doctor-backed company.

Unfortunately, the images and description apparently haven’t been updated to reflect the removal of Actazin (the kiwi-based ingredient) from the current version of the product which I was a little disappointed by as it is a part of what stood out to me.

Still, xylanase and DE111 are both well-studied gut health ingredients supported by clinical research and I feel this is a good addition to my supplement routine that also includes a multi-strain probiotic.

The capsules are easy to take, but the company also says you can open them and mix the content with food or drink if you prefer. The bottle was double sealed upon arrival. The capsules are shelf-stable, and the expiration date was 18 months out.

The small size of the capsules makes them easy to swallow. The expiration date is about 18 months from when I got them. I’ve been taking probiotics for years so I don’t expect to feel any great change from these, but I’ve never taken a combination of enzymes and probiotics so I’m not sure what effect that combo will have. I can say there haven’t been any ill effects, all is good for me.

I have been using supplemental digestive enzymes for a long time, but wish I had started earlier. I already get lots of enzymes in my diet, because it consists mostly of fresh fruits and vegetables. I don’t eat meat, wheat, soy, or corn, and don’t eat anything that’s processed; this gives me a huge advantages versus more typical diets. Even so, I choose to add enzymes. Doing so reduces gas and bloating, which is clearly a desireable benefit. But since I weight train 6 days per week and participate in both climbing and martial arts, my protein needs are higher than typical. And with no meat in my diet, I use some supplemental protein powder (vegan, of course). What I have found with enzymes is I need to use about a fourth of the supplemental protein I used to need. That is because enzymes greatly enhance protein utilization so you need to ingest less of it. This has a sparing effect on your kidneys, reduces the insulin release caused by too muh protein at once (insulin is antagonistic to testosterone), and eliminates other undesired effects from eating more protien than your body can handle in a given time.

But what about this Biomuve product in particular?

I did test it by itself, to see if there were any noticeable loss of benefits versus my regular enzyme products. There wasn’t. I then reduced my regular enzyme intake for a day and did notice a loss of benefits (some gas pain). Based on that experiment, we can be confident Biomuve isn’t shortchanging us in some way. It looks like the xylanase enzyme they use is pretty good stuff! The actizin really helps also.

Capsule size is always a consideration. I have choked on large pills and the experience is both uncomfortable and scary. These capsules are smaller than choking size, I had no difficulty washing them down.

This also has a bacillus probiotic plus some prebiotic botanicals. I am not enthusiastic about probiotics in general, and due to my diet I don’t feel a need for prebiotics. So I am not evaluating those two components, except that because the probiotics in this formulation are shelf-stable one common problem with probiotics is eliminated. That problem is the need for refrigeration to keep them viable. If that need isn’t fully met at any point between when these are bottled to when you swallow a capsule, the probiotics are inert. And that is the situation with the vast majority of probiotic products. Another problem is the stated population is typically nowhere near the actual population.

Houston Enzymes does not state the population anywhere on the label of the Biomuve product, which leads me to believe they really aren’t interested in playing those kinds of games. And that is one of the things that leads me to trust this brand and like this product.

I regularly repurchase this probiotic. It’s especially great if your gut issues are motility. It gets things moving along:)

It’s unclear where this is manufactured or where any of the ingredients are sourced from. Supplements are difficult in general because they are not regulated by the FDA but they should still at least have a country of origin listed. This bottle only has the distributor mentioned.

  6. David B

These are easy to take and leave no bad after taste. I like that they are made in the US and have no bad fillers. Too early to tell if these offer significant improvements in my health, but I will continue to take them for the benefits they claim.

  7. Hannah

Houston Enzymes makes several specialty enzymes. This one is designed to help with regularity and stool volume by providing the valuable probiotic Bacillus Subtillis along with a fiber digesting enzyme. I tried the product with no adverse effect. The product does come with a California Prop 65 warning and the dose of Bacillus Subtillis is only 1 billion CFU. If you have the regularity problem that this product addresses it may be worth a try though some caution is advised due to the Prop 65 warning. You can likely find supplements that give a larger dose of the probiotic per serving. Otherwise, the supplement is well thought out.

These enzymes + probiotic supplement seem to be very good quality and are helpful in breaking down high-fiber foods and supportive of a healthy gut and proper digestive tract. A serving size is 1 or 2 capsules twice daily. It does not take long before you notice that they work!
