The ad made it seem like this was 100% pure unprocessed flax seed oil. It is NOT. It has added preservatives, anti-oxidant chemicals, and a slue of the her chemicals added in. Garbage!

I first bought NOW’s flax seed oil in 2016 for its intended purpose and liked it as a dietary supplement. I’m a longtime vegetarian–40 years long (yeah, I’m over the hill), so I have to take a measure of care with my diet. Anyway, I liked it as a dietary supplement but didn’t reorder any flax seed oil back then. Life is busy.

I recently reordered, but for a different purpose. I refinish19th-century and pre-1960 cast iron cookware, and I have a booth at a fancy antiques shop as a retirement hobby. I strip cast iron down to bare metal and then season it many times at high heat. I lately came into some really spectacular pieces–“hammered” cast iron and ornate 19th-century waffle irons–and wanted to season with an oil that would have enough shine to highlight the details of these treasures. I knew flax seed oil was the best for that, so I reordered NOW’s organic flax seed oil. The cast iron pieces turned out drop-dead beautiful.

But my real point is this: I wouldn’t pay what other makers wanted for their flax seed oil–certainly not to season cast iron. I checked the earlier order and found that the price today is almost $2 LESS than I paid in 2016.

NOW is a very respectable maker of supplements. And I, for one, am tired of seeing prices for darn near everything soar without any justification that I can see. Some things I can understand, others seem sheer greed. And frankly, greed is a political issue these days.

If I were again looking for a vitamin supplement in the form of flax seed oil, I’d choose NOW because I found it to be a good supplement when I was using it for that purpose. But for seasoning antique cast iron, it seems to be the ONLY sensible option.

I’m actually using this as a massage oil and it’s really nice if you combined some of the essential oils from the Now brand (this shop) you can create a lot of nice oils and put them in separate droppers.

Very reasonable price and good product.

This stuff works well on replacing other oils in your diet; but I found out that virgin olive oil is even better for me, so I ordered a handy dripless oil dispenser and olive oil, which actually tastes even better than flax seed oil.

I have ALWAYS purchased Barleans but their prices have increased beyond what I believe is fair. I order a lot of NOW supplements because of the more reasonable price point and this was no exception. I do believe there is a difference in the product taste but not so much that I will be returning for the Barleans as both are organic cold pressed and unrefined.

I was very satisfied with this oil. I was hesitant because I’ve gotten rancid flax oil from Amazon before, but I decided to gamble. From what I read from the manufacturer, they do in fact refrigerate this product in the warehouse, which is important since the omega 3s in this oil are very delicate and prone to rancidity. ***TO BE CLEAR: This oil has a strong flavor because it is high-lignan, not because it is rancid. Leave most any oil or ghee in a warmer or temperate climate for over a year and you can tell what rancid oil tastes like. Flax oil in general is a strong oil that may take some getting used to. I recommend starting with the pure, organic flax oil with the regular lignan content and then try the high lignan content one if you are looking for more medicinal aspects, although the regular one is medicinal too. I use this oil because it helps with any kind of inflammation or joint pain in the body. I use a couple tablespoons of this each day in meals while macro-dosing turmeric and it has helped to pacify past joint injuries. Being a sensitive oil, don’t cook with it, but add it to food after cooking. Being that the Western diet is typically quite disproportionate in the ratio of omega 6 to 3 fatty acids, foods like flax and chia can be tools for overall balance and wellness.
