(UPDATE: I asked my gastroenterologist if she could prescribe digestive enzymes and she agreed. I have been using Creon for several months now and they are much, much, much more powerful than any over-the-counter enzyme. My abdominal bloating and pain has been reduced to almost nothing. The Proactazyme was great for 6? years, but I guess I now need something stronger.)
I have been using this digestive enzyme blend for well over 5 years. I have been diagnosed with SIBO and gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying). I also use hydrochloric acid will my meals, and a tablespoon of bitters on my tongue to signal my digestive track that food is on the way. I find that small meals are absolutely necessary – over-eating = pain. Chewing fennel seeds and/or ginger after a meal also helps with any discomfort. This supplement is a must-have for people with sluggish digestion (feels like your food is just sitting in your stomach for hours) or SIBO. I usually need only 1 capsule, but I take 2 if I have a meal with heavy protein such as eggs or tuna.

I’ve tried many different types of probiotics and I keep coming back to this one.

these are ok- they are just food enzymes -so no need to spend this much. but if you prefer these – good that there is no taste – easy to swallow and doesn’t upset the stomach

Update, I’m still good as of Feb 2022 and I don’t have to take them every-day now….
Message below is my original review from 10/2021…..
This herb is a life changer. I’ve suffered for years with over growth of Candida and allergic to all medication to reduce the overgrowth. Mentally, I wasn’t prepared to change my eating habits (I need to for overall health). But this!!! My first month was life changing, I’m going on 3 months and it’s still clear. My holistic doctor first prescribed these to me, I ordered my second bottle on Amazon. I’m so thankful!!!!

This is a very good product if you have taken antibiotics or are taking them. It helps your body keep the good bacteria as the antibiotic is killing the bad with the good. I take it all the time more often when on antibiotics.

I’ve been using Proactazyme Plus for years. And, although no one here has a reason to believe anything I write, I’ll say that for me to take any food supplement religiously or otherwise is akin to begging to use someobody elses’ tooth brush. It just doesn’t happen. The reason it happened with ProPlus is because the effects are first beneficial and secondly, measureably predictable. Read on.
The reason I started using this stuff in the first place is because I have a hard time digesting animal protein, particularly red meat. As I understand it, a ‘normal’ digestive system (if there is one), will generally process a medium rare 10 oz steak in six to eight hours. MY digestive system takes most of a couple days. In that time, I become fatigued and lethargic. . . and hungry. It took me a while to figure out why I’d be hungry after eating a huge meal like that. It seems there was a shortage of digestive enzymes (and the presence of blood cell parasites – but that’s another story with a happy ending). In effect, the protein was not being digested fast enough or efficiently enough. Consequently, the small intestine, (where most digestion occurs and hunger signals generally originate), was not handling things very well. Over several years of this nonsense I began to wonder about digestion and the symptoms of hyper- and hypo-glycemia. Did I gain weight? Yeup! Did I feel like crap? Yeup.
So…I tried several things. Most digestive enzymes I tried, (your mileage may vary), worked too fast. Much like a laxative complete with abdominal cramps. (And, I’m sure if I consumed a hand full of ProPlus I’d get that result as well.) So, things got really messy and eating became a guessing game as to when the eight o’clock explosion would actually occur. There isn’t much gentleness about some of these things regardless of how you take them.
A knowledgeable friend of mine has ciliac disease. But before he discovered that he was allergic to everything on Planet Earth, he used ProPlus and got solid, manageable results. So, I tried it on the recommendation of a friend.
If I remember right, Nature’s Sunshine recommends two tabs before each meal to build the enzyme army. My first try was with two tabs before a steak supper. Definite improvement in digestion but not what I thought it should be. Next time around, two tabs DURING the meal. Better results but still not a reasonable process time. I upped the dosage to four tabs during the meal at random intervals. Excellent results.
So, there is a bit of trial and error to determine the best sequence to take them and what dosage might work in your system. Even so, I stand by a suggestion to those of you who find yourself lethargic and fatigued after heavy meals to try this stuff. For the price of these things, it’s worth a try at least.
About myself: I strongly believe that perhaps 90% of the food supplements out there are junk. Another, 9% are probably legitmate but it’s likely that few would see or experience a measureable beneficial effect, except perhaps pretty neon-yellow urine. That leaves 1% of supplements providing the consumer with a noticeable and measureable beneficial effect, i.e. genuine and clearly noticeable after consumption. My philosophy with regard to food supplements is this: “If I can’t articulate beneficial effectiveness after a week it ain’t working and there’s no point in spending more money on it.”
ProPlus is the only supplement I take these days. Nature’s Sunshine products have been very good but understand….you need to know WHY you’re taking supplements in order to measure their effectiveness. Every supplement manufacturer makes outrageous claims about their products. If you believe their packaging, advertising and internet advice without DEFINING what YOU want the product to do, you’re gonna’ deserve all the misery you might end up with, (as well as the loss of copious amounts of cash on bogus products).
Thanks for reading if you got this far. ProPlus is a good product. It works very well for me. It’s the only supplement I take. It’s one of the very few supplements I’ve used whose benefits can be measured by effect. It’s predictable. It’s marketed by a reputable company.
