I can’t tell what it is doing for me – exactly. I remember it being recommended. But having another supplement to take, not something I would bother with if it weren’t for the fact that this seems to have NO stomach issue at all. So cool. I’m like Snoopy. I have a crabby tummy.

This is a long story so here is the executive summary: I am a diabetic (mild, newly diagnosed) on the anti-inflammatory diet. I take lots of supplements so it’s a bit hard to figure out what is happening. I started taking resveratrol (blood glucose goes down), stopped the resveratrol (glucose goes up), started again (glucose goes down). Conclusion, resveratrol is lowering my blood glucose. Read on if you are interested in the full story.

I used to drink red wine and eat peanuts (both loaded with resveratrol) unstoppably.

Then I went on the anti-inflammatory diet and eat a lot of anti-inflammatory foods and supplements. It’s hard to tease out that the impact of any one supplement might be. Hot peppers are a powerful anti-inflammatory. I started with 3 peppers per day. 3 days after I started, I discovered I’d lost all my cravings for food. I didn’t have any desire for ice cream, potato chips, cookies, peanuts, red wine, chocolate…. nothing. Later, I found several articles: one stated “hot peppers regulate the appetite” which explains the lost cravings. And another explained peanuts and red wine contain resveratrol which might explain why these were “hot” foods for me.

As, an aside, calcium may regulate the appetite as well, but I’ve supplemented calcium for decades and it didn’t do anything.

I figured, I better replace the lost resveratrol and started with the Dr’s Best.

I subscribe to ConsumerLabs.com which tests supplements. From the Oct. 8, 2016 report. Dr’s. Best passed the purity test, it contained the stated type and amount of ingredients. It’s a good product.

On the other hand, there are many good products and 3 were singled out as cheaper (with cavaets): Shoprite ( $0.10 per pill), BulkSupplements.com Reservatrol (sold on Amazon) $0.09 per 100mg serving and Costco TruNature 250 mg – $0.14 per serving. The Costco resveratrol also contains green tea extract – equivalent to one cup of weak tea. This addition earned disapproval from ConsumerLabs. I don’t object since I tend to wash down the resveratrol with green tea.

Consumer Labs was unable to pinpoint clear cut clinical evidence to take resveratrol.
Lower blood pressure – some early diagnostics that flow might be improving but did not translate into lower blood pressure
Lowers cholesterol – a combination of resveratrol and grapeseed extract was used in a preliminary study of cholesterol levels – the combination did lower cholesterol. Note, high levels of resveratrol (many hundreds of milligrams to grams ) may affect statin and other cardiovascular drug levels.
    Resveratrol may thin your blood.

Resveratrol *may* help control glucose levels in new diabetics. It has be shown ineffective in established diabetes patients (10 yr history).

One very small study showed, 200 mg Resveratrol and 320 mg quercetin (split into two doses and taken with meals) on healthy overweight middle – older patients show improvement in blood glucose levels and MEMORY after 26 weeks.

There is a lead suggesting resveratrol could help with age-related macular degeneration. Further studies needed.
There are more leads suggesting resveratrol could help cancer patients. High need for more studies.

So, overall, I have no personal results which would provide anecdotal evidence to take Resveratrol. And ConsumerLab’s review of the clinical results suggests most of the studies are small and many are inconclusive. Only one study suggests Resveratrol lowers cholesterol.

But I believe my body, it wanted resveratrol for some reason. It is a antioxidant. But given the cost of supplements and the lack of clear results, I’m going to switch to either the bulk supplement or the Costco TruNature.

It took me a while to order the next batch of Resveratrol and during that time my glucose readings mysteriously rose. There were times when I expected my glucose readings to be below 100 but where about 110 instead. Finally, my next batch arrived and within two days my readings went back to the 100 or below zone.

I went and read the clinical trial articles on resveratrol and diabetes. Resveratrol has been shown to control blood glucose for newly diagnosed diabetics (I’ve been diagnosed for about 1.5 years). In a separate study, it has been shown to PREVENT diabetes in pre-diabetics. Every single pre-diabetic who took resveratrol in the clinical trial stayed healthy; many people in the control group developed diabetes (it was a two year study). These are both small but well designed and well run clinical trials. Too small to be definitive but large enough to be a very promising lead.

My recommendation: In normal doses, resveratrol is unlikely to hurt you (some of the cholesterol studies had larger cohorts). If you are pre-diabetic – take the stuff! Diabetes is no fun. If you are newly diagnosed, give it a try. If you are not newly diagnosed (as in 10 years), it won’t work. Sorry, there was a small but well run clinical trial that demonstrated this sad news.

Avoid magnesium stearate, proprietary blends, and non-white resveratrol! It also raised my blood pressure as opposed to lowering it. The trashcan is now in possession of this product. Get your resveratrol from berries and from other natural products.

This works really well. I bought for my mum and I might buy it again

I had been taking “Pricy” Source Naturals Pycnogenol 100mg, 60 Tablets, (from pine tree bark) 2x for over a year to get my Resveratrol, with No felt benefits?

I read independent scientific studies that said- “only trans-Resevrtrol is absorbed by the human body”!

I also read several other studies that said lower dose “may” be better, until long-term side-effects are better studied!?

So I thought I’d give this 100mg try (1x with breakfast, and 1x with dinner)
Studies say possible bad side-effects with over 300mg daily?-

The First thing I “Soon” noticed was getting Aroused by pretty girls while watching TV, and that hadn’t happened for quite-some-time (I’m in my late 60’s)!

The second thing was that I had the energy/will power to Finally complete a long overdo list of projects/chores!
