  1. Honey Bee

Can’t go wrong with a sugar-free version of these, especially given how often we end up needing to use them (mostly in the winter).

  2. CuteHappyLittleBug

    Good medicine.

I have never before worried about too many calories in my cough medicine. But on a whim, i tried this version of the old standby. I must say that the taste is no improvement. And its pretty hard to make cough medicine taste worse so no worries there. And it worked just as good as the regular variety. The plus that i really noticed was the lack of nasty morning mouth. I guess the diabetic version lacks the sugar that tooth and mouth ickies like. Hurray for me. i just wish this version was as easy to find and the same price…

  4. Very handy little hanging pots, great idea !

I’m not a diabetic or a chemist, but I am a health-conscious person who likes to avoid sugar and alcohol if it’s not needed.

I recently purchased a Dayquil/Nyquil “Severe” combo pack from a local retailer so I was able to compare the labels between them.

There are three things that this diabetic version claims to be free of: 1) Sugar 2) Alcohol 3) Decongestants

For #1, Sugar, I found out that the regular, non-diabetic version doesn’t have sugar either. Both versions use sucralose as a sweetener. So while it is true that the diabetic version is sugar-free, so is the regular version.

For #2, Alcohol, the regular version Nyquil’s leading inactive ingredient is alcohol, labeled as 10% of the volume. The diabetic version of Nyquil does not have alcohol at all. Dayquil for both the regular and diabetic version do not have alcohol. For all versions, there is propylene glycol as an inactive ingredient, and the research is mixed on how this affects people with diabetes; the propylene glycol is probably used as part of the formulation as a solvent.

For #3, Decongestants, the diabetic versions of Dayquil and Nyquil lack Phenylephrine HCI, which exist in the regular versions at 5 mg and 10 mg respectively. Honestly, in this small of dose, it doesn’t seem that significant. However, the diabetic version of Dayquil is free of Guaifenesin, a chest decongestant, where the regular version has 200 mg. This amount does seem significant.

It’s worth noting that the regular version of Dayquil has 325mg of Acetaminophen, while the diabetic version of Dayquil has 650mg, a significant difference likely to make up for the removal of the other active ingredients listed above. Another artificial difference is that the regular version Nyquil is green, where the diabetic version is red.

Overall, based on these differences, the diabetic version is sure to make you feel better when you’re sick, mostly because Acetaminophen is doing the heavy lifting in all versions. The lack of alcohol in the diabetic version Nyquil may reduce the value of “getting a good night’s sleep”, as alcohol is what causes drowsiness.

I’m glad to see companies come up with specific formulations for diabetics because it does help folks who have it, but for folks who don’t it’s nice to see a diversity of formulations. Sometimes when I’m sick, I’m not congested and don’t necessarily have troubles sleeping – this formulation is a healthier alternative to the regular version. But when it comes to other kinds of sickness, it’s nice to have the regular version available as well. I’m giving this the highest possible rating because not only does the label hold up to their claims, but at the time of writing this review, it is also a few dollars cheaper than the regular version.

Overall, I like this double-pack of DayQuil and NyQuil. It is marketed to those with diabetes, but I think it should really just be branded as “sugar-free” (it uses sucralose as a sweetener instead of sugar). It goes down easy and is a great sugar-free alternative.

  7. Authentically Opinionated

Nice to have an alternative to the added sugar medicine. Sure, it doesn’t taste as pleasant, but it’s medicine, if you want something that tastes better then have a cookie! Good product and will definitely buy it again!

I have always been cautious when taking over-the-counter cold medications, as I do not know how they will affect my blood sugar. I was happy to find something for colds that I felt good about taking. The taste is not the same, but it isn’t terrible. It’s a great option from a brand I trust.
