This product smells so good but burned my face so bad. I could not even leave it on past 1 minute. It also made my eyes water so bad

I’ve now purchased this very effective exfoliating and resurfacing mask four times. I’m dismayed to see some negative reviews that seem to demonstrate a misunderstanding of 1) what types of skin (and what circumstances) this mask is appropriate for, 2) the active ingredients in the mask and how they work, and 3) how to use the mask appropriately. Since this mask has been a true game changer in my skincare routine, I’m providing an in depth review addressing these issues.

    1) Who should use this mask, and why? This product is a deeply exfoliating facial mask that works through chemical (acid and enzyme) exfoliation. It acts like a gentle peel, dissolving any dead, rough skin, excess surface sebum, and leaving a fresh, glowing complexion. The proof is in the mirror, hence my repeated purchases. That said, don’t expect miracles – it won’t eliminate wrinkles, excavate blackheads, or firm your jawline. There are other products for those needs.

For your own comparison, I have psoriasis, including frequent outbreaks on my lips, forehead, and scalp. My skin is therefore also sensitive. However, I have been using a glycolic acid cleanser and toner, vitamin C serum, AHA/BHA serum, and retinol serum daily and religiously for more than 10 years. So – very important – despite my skin condition, my skin is *trained* to handle an occasional peel or mask of a higher acid concentration than my daily products on occasion. I NEVER use any chemical exfoliant, including my daily roundup of unguents, when I have an active outbreak of psoriasis or my skin is feeling at all sensitive.

Any skin type can likely use this mask except for those with sensitivity to any ingredient. Regardless of your skin type, if you do not exfoliate your skin regularly, especially with chemical exfoliants, you may need to use this product with more care than indicated on the label (helpful hints below), or skip it and use a more gentle product.

    2) Active Ingredients and How They Work. This product conains several exfoliating ingredients: pumpkin enzymes, pumpkin puree, papain (papaya) enzymes, and urea. Pumpkin and papaya are fruits, and fruit contains varying amounts of different types of enzymes and acids (such as the glycolic, salicylic, and alpha hydroxy acids we also find in skincare products). In skincare, those enzymes and acids munch on the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, revealing the newer skin beneath. In this mask, these enzymes and acids are concentrated compared to the serums and creams we use daily so that they’ll pack a punch, working quickly and effectively. Urea is also used in skincare as a gentle exfoliant and skin softener; it’s often found as the exfoliating ingredient in eczema and psoriasis creams and lotions.

    3) Product Usage. The product instructions say to leave the mask on for 8-15 minutes, depending on skin sensitivity and type, and then rinse off. They also say to use the mask 1-2 times per week. I find that, given the amount of daily exfoliation in my skincare routine, and my skin type, I only need to use this mask once or twice per month for no more than 10 minutes. I base my use on how my skin looks and feels, and only use it when I need to.

For newbies to this product, I would recommend using it for just 2-5 minutes to start, depending on your skin sensitivity and experience with chemical exfoliation. Be sure to start with a freshly cleansed face, no toner, serums, or other products (one exception below). Assess how well it works, but also how your skin feels. A little redness and stinging is normal. This is an acid and enzyme mask! The stinging should only last while you use the mask and should go away as soon as you rinse it off. Any residual redness should disappear in half an hour or whatever is normal for you when trying a new product. (Note: if the stinging begins to become unbearable, don’t tough it out! Rinse it off.) From there, you can determine whether more or less time in the mask is needed, increasing usage by one or two minutes each time, and the appropriate frequency of use.

Speaking of rinsing: some reviews complain of difficulty removing the mask. This is an issue with many facial masks, not just this one. I use EcoTools facial sponges specifically designed to remove facial masks that I purchased here on Amazon. You can also use a washcloth or microfiber cloth that is well saturated with water. Just be sure to gently wipe off the mask and avoid scrubbing, which can cause irritation.

If my skin is feeling dry, and I want to avoid irritation, I will apply a drop or two of facial oil to my clean face and neck before applying the mask. (This is a trick I use for any potentially sensitizing skin treatment.) I like 100% pure squalane or rosehip seed oil. I’ll leave the mask on for a couple of minutes longer when I use oil to allow extra time for the mask to penetrate the dead skin cells.

I hope that this review is helpful to someone considering purchasing this excellent mask, which is actually used in the Raya Spa in Los Angeles. With a little precaution, it is a truly refreshing part of my skin routine!

I’ve been using this mask for some time now, it needs to get used to it, as the mask makes the face tingling for a while, but afterwards, the skin very fresh, and smooth

Holy cow! This mask burned SO bad!! Immediately, when I put it on, my face was in instant pain. However, I really wanted to see if it worked, so I left it on for 10 minutes. I think the burning went down a little, but it hurt the whole time. I have a fairly high pain tolerance, and this mask was instantly burning skin. But when I took it off, my face was, surprisingly, not really red at all, and it left my skin feeling super smooth. I believe this mask works, and I will continue to use it, but if you do, just beware of the pain.

My skin feels SO smooth after using this! I love the smell too. Smells like pumpkin pie on your face!!

Love the Pumpkin Spice smell. The consistency is a bit watert, but it makes it easy to use just the right amount. After 2 uses, 3 days apart, I noticed my skin was brighter, and the few small whiteheads I had were disappearinf. I am 56, with combination skin that tends to get dry when acid products are too harsh, and this did dry my skin a bit leaving it on for 13 minutes. I will shorten time to the recommended 8 minutes for mature skin in the future. The peel was delivered with 6 generous samples of their other skin care products – I am in love with the gentle cleanser and under eye treatments. Will definitely be ordering this peel again, as well as some of the products I sampled. Highly recommend!

    Comparing Clarity to this product!
It works good and smells amazing however comparing to Clarity’s product, it’s not quite as good as there’s, however if you use a lot you can start feeling the tingling of the enzymes. Clarity uses less and almost feels like a burning sensation. This product was a good alternative and slot less $$, but not quite as good.

I’ve been searching for enzyme masks that don’t have strong acids added. I’ve used this product for a couple of weeks and I can’t tell if it’s doing much for my skin. It burns very intensely because of the cinnamon oil that is obviously in it. Enzyme peels usually don’t burn on their own, unlike peels that contain acids. I understand that this is supposed to be a pumpkin mask but the addition of cinnamon oils to make it smell like a pumpkin pie is unnecessary. The burning feeling isn’t even accomplishing anything. Cinnamon and skincare don’t mix and is just possibly there to fool people into thinking it’s a strong peel. The feeling is unpleasant, and the fragrance also burns my eyes even if I’m not getting the product near them. I likely won’t order this again unless the cinnamon oil is removed from the ingredients, but you also can’t tell if it’s removed because the company just lists it as fragrance.
