There is a saying in Colorado about skin products: “You put the moisture in and Colorado sucks it out!” Shea Butter is an exception to that rule. When you apply Shea Butter, it stays put and does it’s job!
And I like NOW brand Shea Butter. This inexpensive and decent quality Shea Butter is exactly what I need in my cold and super-dry climate. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg so I can use LOTS of it. And it isn’t a mineral oil laden artificial product so I am not worried about toxicity. I put it on my hands and heels daily for super soft and smooth skin. The texture is gritty when applied but I attribute that to the dry, thin, cold climate where I live. Once massaged into warm skin, it gets melty and smooth and absorbs in.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of five stars is that it is NOT organic. For that reason, I’ll probably be on the lookout for something comparable that is clear of all toxins. However this product is Hexane free, which is a good thing. For the time being, NOW Shea Butter is fine with me and I’m not too worried about it. If organic is important to you, then you probably won’t be satisfied with this product.
Shea butter is the only completely NATURAL product that rivals petroleum jelly for it’s ability to super-hydrate and hold moisture inside the skin. But petroleum jelly is definitely a super petrochemical product and therefore not something I am comfortable using. In my area, it is important to have the heaviest, deepest moisturizers available and that is shea butter. Here in the Rocky Mountains, the conditions are the acid test for any skin moisturizing product.
If it works here, it will work anywhere! Highly recommended!

Very nice, high quality shea butter. I used to buy shea butter in bulk for my handmade soap and lotions business. Now that I am not in that business any longer, I was looking for a small, high quality shea. Now brands are well-known to me, so I opted for this and am very happy with it.
Shea butter is really great used alone for extremely dry skin. It’s really dry where I live, and I am always searching for things to soften my dry skin, often coming back to shea. I also have recently used it on my old Golden Lab’s elbows – he spends most of his days now sleeping and had developed some pretty bad hard, dry spots on his elbows. Applied once or twice a day for a week or so (and just occasionally thereafter) and his elbows are all healed up.
This is a nice quality butter, it doesn’t smell, and has a slightly off-white hue. It arrived on a very hot day, and when I opened it it was melted (as I supposed it would be), so take care opening if you live in a warm climate. Once it cooled and re-solidified, it is not grainy, as some shea gets after it’s been heated.

Lots of people mention that this product is gritty. I did find that to be true but since I melt it down before use anyways it was not an issue for me. I will say that when I melt it down and recool it the oil becomes very smooth and easy to use. I used this for two pregnancies. I used this every day in both pregnancies. I rub it from my neck to mid thighs. I have no stretch marks from either pregnancy. No I am not one of those lucky people who just doesn’t get stretch marks. I know this because I have lots of stretch marks on my butt and outer thighs from gaining and losing weight in my early 20’s.
This has made my old stretch marks harder to see and prevented me from getting any new ones. I went from 116 pounds to 150 my first pregnancy and still did not get a single mark on my stomach. I am a firm believer that this Shea butter is the reason why!
Yes it is thick and oily. I just designated a few shirts to wear when I used it that I didn’t care about. This oil basically destroyed those. They always feel greasy no matter if you wash them. In my opinion it was a very small price to pay for the success of this product.

This is a daily must have in our household. Everyone male, female, young, old uses this product. It is wonderful! I highly recommend this to EVERYONE! I have heard some people complain or comment that the Shea Butter they received was gritty. Shea Butter should NOT be gritty. It only becomes gritty if exposed to too much heat. If it is kept at room temperature it stays solid and will melt when you rub it between your hands. What makes the NOW Foods Shea Butter great is the lack of smell, smooth consistency and the versatility. It can be used on hair, skin and my favorite mixed with other products.
In case you are looking for ideas or new ways to use your Shea Butter. Here are a some tips:
Shea Butter by itself can be used to moisturize chapped skin and to maintain soft skin on hands, face, hair, lips, feet basically all over.
I mix my Shea Butter with Coconut Oil (another favorite) and this makes it melt really easy and apply quickly. No need to warm it up as much.
I mix Shea Butter with naturally scented lotion on days I want to add a scent but need the added moisturizing power of Shea Butter.
You can mix Shea Butter with any lotion or leave in hair conditioner (particularly for curly hair) for added hydration. it helps keep hair soft and doesn’t build up on hair.
If you are new to Shea Butter and looking for a product that will provide excellent moisture and hydration to your body this is a MUST have. I highly recommend!
