I bought these empty capsules because I had recently been prescribed cholestyramine powder (Questran) to help deal with GI issues brought on by having my gallbladder taken out.
Cholestyramine is supposed to be mixed with water but it doesn’t dissolve, so it forms a gritty, sludgy, foul-tasting orange concoction that I am supposed to drink twice a day before meals for the rest of my life. I tried this once, gagged and almost threw up. For a while I was getting by mixing it into a premade fruit smoothie I could buy at the gas station but that proved to be inconvenient and expensive. I wasn’t taking it very often so I was still suffering from symptoms.
I decided to try packing the powder into gel caps and, lo and behold, it’s been working. I opened a bunch of cholestyramine packets and dumped them on to a clean plate, then scooped it up with one half of the pill and poured it into the other until it was level with the opening, then closed it. I measured and figured I got about 12 pills for one packet of cholestyramine. It was incredibly meticulous and boring work, but with my wife and daughter helping me we created over 100 pills in about an hour.
The prescription is 1 to ½ a packet before meals so I tried taking 6 capsules, and it worked. I backed off to 3 capsules which is what I’ve been doing for the last several weeks. I’ve found that I can sometimes skip the evening dose if my meal isn’t high in fat.
I do have to plan ahead, however, and make sure I take the pills no less than 30 minutes before eating or they don’t work. I think they need that long to dissolve. I was worried that I was going to get plugged up but that hasn’t happened.
Please note that this review isn’t meant to constitute medical advice, just my personal experience with this product.

These capsules are not cheap, they’re firm. Also, they are tasteless, thankfully.

These capsules are perfect – just the right size and easy to pull apart or put back together, and fill my own supplements.
On their own they are tasteless and they don’t dissolve too quickly, like if you’re holding them in hand or pop one in your mouth too soon. So far this has been a great experience having never tried doing this myself before. I’d definitely recommend the NOW Foods capsules.

Having never filled empty capsules before I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be, so for those in the same predicament, here’s my story. My two large dogs refused to take their smelly flea treatment pills with all the traditional methods (cheese, peanut butter, hamburger, pill pockets) so the last few months I’ve been throwing it down their throats the old fashioned way, much to the chagrin of all of us. Not knowing what size capsules to get, I bought the single 0 size, which turns out to be a little small. It takes 5 capsules to use up one ground up (1620 mg) pill. Fortunately I also ordered the small glass funnel and it makes it much easier, although still a little time consuming. After I fill the larger capsule side, I sit it upright in a small shot glass full of uncooked rice so the that the pill doesn’t fall over while I fill the other side. The dogs had no problems gobbling down the pills after I hid them in chicken pill pockets. Be sure to work on a dry surface or the capsules will stick together. Completely worth the purchase to not have to wrestle with the dogs while they spit stinky pills all over the floor.

Great value! I used them for making Kratom pills before I stopped using Kratom. Great product, easy to use, no nasty taste, easy to swallow, easy to fill, and quite durable.

I’ve been buying these for a couple years now. They are easy to work with and I have no issues taking them.

I know these are intended for filling with supplements or other remedies, but I use them a bit different. I use them to make small pills and partial doses easier to swallow, and to combine multiple pills into a single capsule (though these won’t fit a lot). The weirder use I’ve found for them is to delay the time from intake to med absorption for meds that need some staggering.
The most important thing to know when using these to time med release is the time it takes for the capsule to dissolve. Only after it has sufficiently dissolved does the pill inside start dissolving as well. Usually it’s not a huge issue, but for time dependent meds like IR pain meds, antiemetics, or sleep aides, the extra time spent breaking down the capsule before the pill itself is exposed can cause some unwanted delays. Other times though, that delay is exactly what’s needed, like for taking antiemetics prior to nausea inducing pain meds. It’s much more conveniently making one trip to the medicine cabinet while in lots of pain.
To figure out the rate at which these dissolve, I’ve done a few tests with medications that have very obvious effects when they start to be absorbed. For this particular medications normal intake without a capsule has anywhere from a 5-10 minute onset, with that variability caused by time since last meal. Using a capsule with the same dose and similar time since having eaten I notice around a 25-30 minute delay. That means the capsule added between 15 and 25 minutes between intake and noticeable effects (with this particular med). By removing the 5-10 non-capsule onset time we can see that the capsules alone add around a 10-20 minute delay before the encapsulated med starts to dissolve and be absorbed. A slightly larger range that I was hoping for, but still decent and consistent enough to fit my needs. I also tested with slower acting meds, but the times were far to inconsistent to tell anything, especially given the variation in onset time of an uncapsulated med is already over the time range for the capsule dissolution rate. If you’re really determined to delay a med by longer it’s also possible to encapsulate a capsule. It’s difficult to do without breaking it, so I haven’t had a chance or need to test it sufficiently.
With all that said, I wish the manufacturer just provided some data on this. Besides lacking info about dissolution rates, the capsules themselves are great. They’re not too big, but big enough for me to fit 2-3 of my daily meds in 1 capsule for a simple 1 pill swallow instead.
