My Story:
I’ve been buying turmeric supplements online, but they weren’t strong (they didn’t have 95% curcuminoids listed on the bottle, and I was too ignorant about curcumin at the time to look for it; I think it was really just turmeric powder in capsules).
The first time I took the BulkSupplements curcumin extract (I think it was 1/4 tsp.), my body got really warm 20 minutes later. That was the only time I had that reaction, though, and now I don’t get warm from it.
Within a few days of taking it, the pain in my upper back muscles was significantly reduced (and I’ve had this pain for a year and a half, pretty much daily, and I’ve tried many things to ease it).
I ran out two days ago, though, and the past few days I have felt the back pain again, but I am also in the middle of a candida cleanse, so my inflammation level is high right now, and I was also trying to make my 25 g. free sample last longer, so some days I only took 500-900 mg. or so, and that wasn’t enough to take away the pain, I guess.
Nitty Gritty Dosing Details:
I just ordered the 250 gram bag, and that will allow me to take the high enough doses that I need to feel relief in my back (between 1/2 tsp and 3/4 tsp a day divided into two doses, which is 1,500 mg–2,000 mg–I use 5-6 scoops a day of a spoon that is 1/8th tsp), and it will probably last 4-5 months.
Fun Absorption Facts:
To increase the absorption of the curcumin, I usually cook with it, using a bit of coconut oil (Medium Chain Triglycerides are the best fats to cook with turmeric/curcumin, like coconut oil or coconut milk–which serves double duty since coconut oil is also an anti-fungal, and I’m on the candida cleanse).
I also bought black pepper extract pretty cheaply from Source Naturals, and I take one of those tablets 30 minutes before my curcumin meal to further assist the absorption process, because I read that bioperine increases the bio-availability of curcumin by 2000% or something.
Beware of staining:
The mess factor and the stain factor are to be considered, though–I am really neat by nature, and even I have had bright yellow stains pop up on my mouth, pillowcases, fingers, shirtsleeves, counters, sponges, dish brushes, etc. I might encapsulate them with my own machine one day, to eliminate the staining and help if I am traveling, but for now, I like being able to cook it with the coconut oil, and I just live with minor stains.
Economical musings:
It’s the most cost-effective option of curcumin that has 95% curcuminoids, even when you factor in the coconut oil and black pepper extract, but only if you buy the 250 gram bag, so hopefully I just have to buy 3 bags a year, which is a total of $210 with free shipping (I have Prime). I would have to spend over $20-30 a month on capsules to get the same result, and the capsules have fillers, too.

I am a repeat buyer of Bulk Supplements and am always happy with the purchase. I especially like the Curcumin for it’s anti-inflammatory effects and very strong antioxidant properties. I add about 1/2 teaspoon to our smoothies every morning and it really seems to help manage arthritis in my hands. Bulk Supplements provides quality supplements, the only thing I would like to see is a different type of packaging. It is a great concept but once the packages are opened it is a little difficult to re-zip them well enough to keep out humidity/moisture in the air. I transfer them to a small glass canning jar with a tight lid and keep them in a kitchen cabinet out of the light , problem solved. Be careful not to get the curcumin on clothing or other cloth items(rugs) as it will stain yellow. However, the benefits of Curcumin far outweighs the yellow color issue.
SOME CURCUMIN BENEFITS BEING RESEARCHED: Research done by the Life Extension Foundation found that curcuminoids target ten factors involved in cancer development. This includes chronic inflammation, DNA damage and disruption of cell signaling pathways. Curcumin supplementation was shown to destroy cancer cell mitochondria, disrupt the cancer cell cycle and arrest stem cell development that facilitates further cancer cell formation.
According to Dr Mercola:
Curcumin is capable of crossing your blood-brain barrier, which is one factor that has led researchers to investigate its potential as a neuroprotective agent for neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.12,13
The potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin suggests it may also promote brain health in general. In the case of Alzheimer’s, recent animal research14 has discovered another bioactive ingredient in turmeric, besides curcumin, that adds to its neuroprotective effects.
This compound, called aromatic turmerone, help endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC) to grow, and these stem cells play an important role brain repair and regeneration activities. According to lead author Adele Rueger:15
“While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons, which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine. Our findings on aromatic turmerone take us one step closer to achieving this goal.”
Curcumin may also be helpful. Previous research has shown that curcumin helps inhibit the accumulation of destructive beta-amyloids in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients, as well as break up existing plaques associated with the disease. People with Alzheimer’s tend to have higher levels of inflammation in their brains, and curcumin is perhaps best known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It can inhibit both the activity and the inflammatory metabolic byproducts of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX) enzymes, as well as other enzymes and hormones that modulate inflammation.
Another common condition that can benefit from curcumin’s anti-inflammatory activity is osteoarthritis. Research16 published in 2011 found that patients who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility compared to the control group. Earlier research17 also found that a turmeric extract blocked inflammatory pathways, effectively preventing the launch of a protein that triggers swelling and pain.

It smells and taste like it should. I am taking this with black pepper to help absorption of the curcumin and to try to save money on medical cannabis prescription cost. I was told that this spice can inhibit the enzyme CYP2C9 which breaks down THC in the body causing a person to require less of the drug because the effects from the initial use don’t go away for up to 24 hours depending on curcumin dose and absorption. Also grapefruit juice is supposed to help prevent the breakdown on curcumin so maybe I can save money on that too. Hopefully this works. On a side note the outside of the bag was stained with curcumin and it is not opened is this the same for everyone else? Heavier staining along the very top sealed strip.
