I hadn’t known about Elderberry as a vitamin supplement until this year when I saw a different brand on Amazon.. all I had ever had was homemade Elderberry jelly which I wasn’t a particular fan of. When I had it, the jelly was very tart and not that sweet. These gummies are the opposite, more sweet than tart. In fact the main ingredients are cane sugar and corn syrup. If you had Elderberry in the past and weren’t a fan, consider giving these a try. These have 3g of added sugars in addition to the natural sweetness of the fruit, so they’re not super great for you but…they taste good and are a good way to get your vitamins. They have 10 calories each (serving size is 2 gummies).
The main benefit to taking Elderberry is immunity support. The Sambucus negra (Elderberry fruit) is a good source of antioxidants and can neutralize your body’s free radicals. Elderberry is thought to help prevent infections and reduce inflammation. Some studies say that it is thought to reduce the duration and severity of flus and colds. What I like about this Puritan Pride brand is that they also have Vitamin A, C, D, E, Phosphorus, and Zinc, so they are a multi-vitamin. They don’t have 100% of anything except Vitamin C but then again, many multi-vitamins don’t have 100% – you’re expected to get some of your daily value from your diet. There is 100mg of Elderberry concentrate in the daily serving.
These gummies are soft and easy to chew and swallow and have a pillowy texture to them. They don’t have sugar granules on top of them and for the most part they don’t stick together in the container. They use pectin (vegetable-sourced) to make the gel instead of pork or beef gelatin like many gummies. Although they don’t have that source of animal product, they are not listed as vegan because the Vitamin D in these is from irradiated sheep’s wool (lanolin). There are other forms of Vitamin D that are veggie-sourced but the Cholecalciferol from lanolin mimics natural vitamin D that the body makes much more than other sources.
These vitamins are made in NY, USA but there is a disclaimer that the ingredients are sourced world-wide. I do like that it shows the form of the vitamin that was used so you know the source (for example the lanolin.
These gummies have no artificial sweeteners or flavors, they are gluten, lactose, soy, wheat, yeast and fish free for people that have allergies. They do say that they have bioengineered food ingredients, but it isn’t clear what has been altered unfortunately.
Overall, I am very happy with these Puritan’s Price Elderberry gummies. I have been able to stay healthy since starting elderberry supplements with no cases of a cold or flu. These are a really good price (good value), especially considering that they have a lot of other vitamins in them so it cuts down on me having to use so many other products too. I had another brand I had also tried recently which had sugar on them but were mostly similar but these are much cheaper for the same ingredients. These are a third of the price… but the other brand has 300mg of sambucus negra while this only has 100mg. These are not proven to keep you from getting the flu or cold and I haven’t been sick so I am not needing to take a huge amount of elderberry daily. Your needs may vary..

As immune system gummies go, I’d say the Puritan’s Pride Elderberry Gummy with Vitamin C, D & Zinc are pretty robust. Although containing minuscule amounts of most of the constituents, it still compares favorably to the Hilma Elderberry Gummies I’ve been taking. It has a definite grape flavor. Probably due to the grape juice concentrate included. Plus, it dissolves faster than most other gummies, which can be a good thing or bad, depending on your preference. Anyway, here are the ingredients:
Calories: 20
Carbohydrates: 5g
Sugars: 4g
Vitamin A: 375mcg
Vitamin C: 150mg
Vitamin D: 6mcg
Vitamin E: 6mg
Zinc: 2mg
Sodium: 10mg
Elderberry Extract: 100mg
As you can see, the only components with meaningful amounts are Vitamin C and the Elderberry Extract. That’s ok if you use these to supplement heavier dose immune boosters, and still better than nothing if this is all you take. This is the first time I’ve tried the Puritan’s Pride brand and I think it’s a winner.
